NFLPA suspends agent Poston indefinitely

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

The NFL Players Association notified the NFL that agent Carl Poston has been suspended indefinitely.

The league office officially informed 32 teams in a memo that Poston can't be involved in negotiations for any player, nor can he be an adviser on any deals. The term of the suspension was "until further notice."

Poston filed suit in U.S. District Court in New York claiming a two-year suspension should be overturned. Congress was also inquiring about the NFLPA's agent certification process and how it related to Poston.

An eight-member NFLPA disciplinary board recommended a suspension when it claimed Poston had been negligent in negotiating a contract for former Redskin LaVar Arrington. The union claimed Poston signed the contract without ensuring it had a $6.5 million bonus clause that had been agreed upon.

Previous legal challenges of agent certification have been upheld at least two times in previous court cases. It is not known how the House of Representatives inquiry will affect the union's decision.

Poston recently signed cornerback Ty Law to a five-year, $31 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Couldn't happen to a nice person. I love the fact that he can't even take an advisory role. Means that his brother Kevin will have to go SOLO. Wonder if Kevin will be able to handle it.

I guess Ty will be doing his two a days courtesy of Carl - got Ty hoodwinked into his second phoney deal in as many seasons just under the wire. Ty has some seriously misplaced loyalties. If he signed the deal the team that drafted him offered in 2004 he'd be $2M ahead of the game with essentially 2 $5M seasons to go - which is likely all he'll ever see in KC. Instead he puts his faith in two guys who have never delivered for him. Stupid.

Deion, Deion Branch....read up.

So since this is UPHOLDING a previously issued suspension;

Does this mean the Law-Chiefs deal is invalidated and we can start another "Will the Pats sign Ty Law?" thread ??? ;)

Can't wait for the Bang! Cartoon...

Poston now INDEFINITELY banned by Union

From KFFL:
NFL | Poston suspended indefinitely

John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the NFL Players Association notified the NFL that agent Carl Poston has been suspended indefinitely. The NFL informed all 32 teams in a memo that Poston can't be involved in negotiations for any player, nor can he be an adviser on any deals. The term of the suspension was "until further notice." It was unclear why the union termed the suspension "until further notice" when the original length was two years.

I wonder how this effects Ty deal with the Cheifs? At least the Pats won't have to deal with him anymore.

PFT reported that only Kevin's name was on Ty's contract. So obviously they either knew it was coming or they planned ahead.....for a change....

Apparently not.

Word has it that they've now had to ask their older brother, Tom, to fill in at the agency as well.

He doesn't have much experience as an NFL agent, but then again, he can't do much worse than Carl... and at the very least, maybe he can ACT like a player agent.

Carl was already serving a suspension, so was ineligible to negotiate or close any deals--it would have been supreme idiocy to have him involved in any deal (not that idiocy is out of character for them mind you).

Not true. He was eligible to continue working while his appeal was being heard. In fact Kevin stepped in as the front man on Ty's deal about two weeks ago when Carl ruptured his achilles.

There is no way the NFLPA can stop Carl from consulting his brothers - they will likely have a micro chip implanted behind brother Tom's pale left ear so he too can pimp their shrinking stable of players...

What this means is Carl can't bein contact with any of the GM's or players directly. And among Poston's he was considered the brains....

Consult--but not sign though--correct?

I'm not sure, but I think "older" brother is dead.

too funny

Near as I can tell he's still alive, at least according to Wikipedia (interesting trivia - he married actress Suzanne Plechette in 2001 (who played Bob Newhart's wife on the Bob Newhart show... odd, I wonder if it feels like he's cheating on Bob!).

But even if he is dead, that's probably a bonus if you're being represented by the Poston's as he's less likely to do any harm.

PFT is saying the suspension is for 2 years:

POSTON SUSPENDED TWO YEARS, NOT INDEFINITELY

Contrary to a memo sent on Wednesday by the league office to the 32 NFL teams explaining that the NFLPA has suspended agent Carl Poston indefinitely, NFLPA general counsel Richard Berthelsen tells us that Poston has been suspended for two years, effective immediately.

Berthelsen has forwarded to us a copy of his July 25, 2006 letter advising Poston of the action. Berthelsen's letter outlines in convincing (in our view) detail Poston's attempts to delay the appeal process that Poston himself initiated after the NFLPA's disciplinary committee previously suspended him for two years due to his actions in connection with the December 2003 contract extension signed by linebacker LaVar Arrington.

The key here is that the most recent action is a separate two-year suspension, which means that Poston could now be barred from representing NFL players for up to four years.
