Bye week filler - Brandon Lloyd

In the offense that Brandon has been in of Josh's, he's been the #1 receiver. If Josh does come here, he'll have two TE's that can be considered a #1 option along with Wes. He'll definitely have to change his offense to gear it towards the talent that we have on the roster. Will Brandon be fine as just one of the guys Brady will throw it to instead of THE guy who gets the most balls thrown his way?

He (Lloyd) will be able to run the whole route tree, he won't face double coverage all the time. Matter of fact that offense would be a match up nightmare, with the threat of Lloyd stretching the field, Welker underneath and the TE's in the middle.... and Vreen out of the backfield... just wow.

i know Lloyd is getting old...

but if he still has it, he an be the #2 WR (4th option) for the next two years, while we draft someone this year and he grows for the next two

until Lloyd is old, then the drafted guy replaced him

this all depends on Branch NOT still having it

Lloyd isn't really a stretch the field kind of receiver, although he can do a little bit of that too. He's a guy capable of threatening the intermediate part of the field from the outside, and is physical enough to overcome press man coverage. I'd love to have him here.

I know Branch was a seemless fit into the system, but if a player could run the trees, replacing his 51 (of 90 targets) receptions for 702 yards then I could see Branch being released.

Best case would be competition at next years training camp. I like Branch and his role in he offense, but he can be replaced (it would have to be demostrated though)

Lloyd will be 31 when the 2012 TC season commences. Looking at his track record, just stats and how many times he's bounced around, I would guess he needs Josh more than any team absent Josh needs him. So he should come at a fairly reasonable price with perhaps some really sweet incentives. Less than what we spent on Ocho and Branch this season. Branch could still come back at an even more reasonable salary and incentives he likely doesn't make as insurance, because his market will be fairly non existent. Maybe limited to KC... It's unfortunate Ocho has $3M in dead cap because that would cover 2012 Branch and the backend of the WR unit. But the cap savings on Ocho alone ($1.5M) probably covers Branch. So Lloyd would be doable with Welker for about half of what Welker gets and I don't see him commanding more than that anywhere except with Josh.

That's fine and all and I was not insinuating he can't grasp the offense. I agree that our offense with him will be a matchup nightmare, but what might be an issue is the fact that he will no longer be the number 1 target. Is he fine with that, seeing as the reason why he loves McD so much now is because of how much he sees the ball in his offense.

At the very least, Lloyd can be Branch or Ocho's replacement. Patriots still need 1 more receiver. Free agents in 2012 are: Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon.

Only concern I have is what is Brandon's attitude? Is he like Santonio?

V-e-r-e-e-n.

70 catches, 966 yards, 5 TDs on two of the worst offenses in the NFL, Lloyd/Welker/Gronk/Hernandez, the Pats could focus the draft/FA on defense. The RBs, WRs, and TEs would be all set and stacked, maybe leaving one high draft pick for the OL.

I would do it. That instantly solves the wideout problem, and gives us a chance to draft and develop a guy behind him.

Develop a WR good one...

Love the idea of Lloyd coming here as long as it means the end of Ochoa Stinko.

With McDaniels set to join the staff and considering the way things have gone down with Ocho, I would not at all be surprised to see this guy in NE at some point. Even if he ultimately doesn't end up here, I would not at all be surprised to hear strong rumors of the Pats being interested. The guy loves McDaniels.

I just don't see Lloyd (per his statement about getting a ton of balls with McD) as being a "Patriot Way" kind of guy. Buuuut, who knows, maybe we could squeeze a couple great years out of him a la Moss.

Put Lloyd on a short leash (ala Moss, as you indicated). No full-guarantees (Bonehead OCHO contract).

First, we need to lock-up Welker!

To me, losing Welker makes any other topic of conversation about the offense null and void. We need that guy to remain a Patriot for the rest of his career. I'd take one Wes Welker over five Brandon Lloyds.

I think you may be reading too much into his quote. From what Lloyd said, he felt McDaniels just knows how to use his skills better. Not that he gets the ball a lot. Lloyd said other OCs saw him as a deep threat specialist (being a decoy and drawing the double teams is part of being a deep threat specialist), but McDaniels got him to be effective running all types of routes.

Personally, I think that statement seems to be more like the Patriot Way than not in many ways. Many deep threat WRs don't want to run over the middle or get a lot of quick outs or whatever. Most of them want to be making the big plays.

Yes, his past bad attitude wrap is a concern, but it seems that Lloyd buys into McDaniels' system and would be happy in New England.

What are the rules for player movement during the playoffs? Same as regular season? Lets say the Rams cut him right now? Does he go through waiver process?

Yep, those quotes certainly didn't read like he'd be happy if the offense game-planned away from him for say 3 games in a row. Could be wrong though.

What were the rumors in regards to us getting him in the regular season? anyone know?
