All the yammering on other fan sites, all the predictions that the Pats are finally going "a bridge too far," all the allegations that the Pats are no longer "about character," point to one thing: sour grapes.

People know that even the little bump we'd get this year out of so-so efforts by Moss, Welker, and Stallworth (not bloody likely, in my book,) puts us well ahead of SD and Indy, the other two teams worth noting in the NFL.

People know we had the second best defense in the league in terms of points against.

People are wishing instead of facing up to it: the games are played and won on the field, and anybody can get overconfident, injured, or just plain out of synch. But you can not count on those effects to knock our your opponent. Quite simply, they know the Pats are a really tough out even with no WR corps, and a musical chairs secondary (not to mention the flu.)

Basically, they know that (on paper,) the current situation just ain't fair. NE can beat other teams regularly without superstars. It really pisses them off to see us with one or two for a change.

And that leads the rest of the league, the media, former players, etc. etc. etc. to talk about how our model has changed, how we're showing desperation, etc. After the main story settled down, they needed to say or write something. Now they're questioning the leadership and the ethics of the team, or the "specialness" of what NE's done in the past.

To which I say: "knock yourself out."

See, I'm tired of it, and I'm just an effete desk jockey that hasn't put on pads since midget league. What do you think coaches and players make of the recent spins?

Bring it!

I would much, much rather see this group playing with a chip on the old shoulder pad.

Strong post. I can't really blame other team's fans and media pundits for saying the things they've said. They have to have SOME hope to make it interesting. It wouldn't be fun if everyone just came out and said the Patriots were a team tat almost made it to the Superbowl last year, and since then have added 4 Grade-A players to the team. Hell, I would probably be trying to fool myself as well if I rooted for another team!
