Gronk too. Let's imagine a world where Gronk re-injures his back as a rookie. After all, that was was a widely acknowledged risk, and pretty much the only reason why he fell to the 2nd round when guys with half his talent routinely go in the 1st. I'm sure posters here would have had a ton of restraint in acknowledging the such a risk was warranted due to his unlimited ceiling. He definitely wouldn't have become a punchline on par with Ras-I Dowling, and clear evidence that Belichick is a failure as a GM.

As a general rule, I'm fine with picks like Dowling and Tate because they produce an occasional Gronk or Vollmer. I'm fine with picks like Wilson and Harmon because they produce an occasional Collins. These guys are so good now that it's easy to forget that the Collins, Gronk, Vollmer, McCourty, and Jones pick were all widely panned at the time.

Jamie Collins is what happens when a pick like Tavon Wilson or Duron Harmon works out.

Actually, Collins was never a "what, WHO?" pick like those guys. He was a consensus 2nd rounder with a big up arrow, not a "reach." It's just that after drafting Chandler Jones and Hightower, Pats fans (me included) had pretty much ignored his position in their mocking and research. Whoopsie-daisy.

FWIW, here's what I posted back on his draft day:

After peeling myself off the ground, I remembered: 6'4" 250 with a 41.5" vertical! And can cover and tackle.

I think we all got a little over-focused on "need positions." As a result, on Twitter there are football reporters and draftniks nationwide gushing over the Pats' incredibly great pick, while all the Patriots fans have "WHO???" conniptions.

Combine numbers are all nice but they don't really translate that well into actual impact on the field. The most important thing on defense is to process and read situations that unfold at a crazy speed in front of you correctly.

Those fractions of seconds that somebody can run faster around cones wont matter if they lose three times the time recognizing what is going on. Thats the difference between a third down stop or a slant for a TD.

Seriously I heard Lombardi loved him in Cleveland and if Mingo were gone he wanted to trade down to later in the first round for Collins.

FWIW, here's what I posted back on his draft day:

I loved Jamie Collins in 2013 prior to the draft, and thought he was a 1st round talent. Mackenzie Pantoja convinced me that he could do everything that Dion Jordan could do, and more - and he was right. I just never thought that he would even be on the Pats radar, much less that they would take him. I had to peel myself off the ground too, but was elated with the pick, and he's been everything that I'd hoped and more.

He still is goods for a head scratcher every now and then. The first few series last week he looked timid/lethargic for example. It's minimizing these stretches and occasional bone headed play.

Athletically speaking no. That was the reasoning behind the three other guys. Athletically they are completely off the charts for their positions. Don't get me wrong, Luke Kuechly is a good football player and a good athlete but there's plenty of linebackers more athletic than him in the league. Kuechly wins with good technique, awareness and what I would consider B+ athleticism for the position.

Remarkably, they're actually somewhat similar; Kuechly had the better 40 time and better 3-cone time. OTOH, Collins does own the all-time Combine record for the standing broad jump (11'7").
