If you were going to write a textbook on bad coaching/playcalling decisions, what moments from 2007 would you put on the list?

I'll start with one non-Pats and one Pats:

Non-Pats: The Steelers going for the two-point conversion from the 12 after being called for holding.

Pats: The Dolphins completely selling out against the run on 3rd-and-1. I'm not arguing that stacking the box was a bad idea--it definitely wasn't, given the Pats' propensity for the QB sneak--but putting all eleven defenders in the box was: once Maroney got past the LOS, there was no one left between him and the end zone.

Romeo calling a time out to decide wether to challenge a play.

Gibbs calling a time out he doesn't have.

I think you need to separate bad strategic decisions & plain dumb stuff with things that LOOK bad.

the Steelers 2 point conversion from the 12 can mathematically be proven to be a horrible decision.

Gibbs calling a timeout he doesn't have - just dumb.

the Ravens timeout was just a coinflip type of thing that could have gone either way - that really wasn't DUMB, it just didnt work out for the Ravens. but it could have.

I thought this thread was going to be entirely about Mike Tomlin by the title.

    Honestly where do you begin?

How about the current Mr. Rooney signing off on Tomlin as head coach. Take away his Motorola headset and he looks like just another fan on the sidelines.

Not that the game meant anything other than the Pats' run at perfection, but I thought the final scoring drive by the Giants was horribly mismanaged. The Pats took a 10pt lead with something like 4:35 left in the game. The Giants obviously needed two possessions to win or tie. I believe they had two timeouts so what they should have tried to do was score and kick off to the Pats before the two minute warning, then use that warning and two timeouts to stop the Pats 3-and-out and get the ball back for the final scoring drive. Instead of trying to score with any urgency, they instead took their sweet time going down the field, not even bothering to get out of bounds at times and ended up scoring with just over a minute left and one timeout. They basically were pinning all their hopes on recovering an onside kick. Forcing a three-and-out, while easier said than done vs. the Pats, had much better odds. Once the two minute warning hit, I declared "game over", for I knew the onside kick wasn't going to work.

ETA: Philly not giving their rookie LT any help on Osi Umenoirya(sp?) was also one of the worst non-adjustments I've ever seen. Six sacks by Osi, twelve by the Giants in all.

Tomlin takes the cake... Quarterback run by Big, slow Ben on 3rd down with 8 long yards to go... That was the worst call I've ever seen in a game..

There's a separate thread already devoted to that one calll.. Tomlin should be fired, he's no HC.....

Weren't the Steelers 5 down at that point? It's really one of the times where you're in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation when it comes to going for 2 (along with being up by 1 or down by 9). Make it and you're down by a FG, but make a PA or miss the 2-point, and you're still down by a touchdown. I think that makes it a tough call. Having said that, I do agree that going for it from the 12 seems foolish to me. But I don't think it's "mathematically" horrible--statistically poor, yes, but mathematically, it actually makes a little sense.
