Are you allowed more than 1 IR designated to return?

They changed the rule so you don't have to declare the designated player, I believe. I think Deus' point was more that we have multiple candidates who we may want to return to the team, and McClellin probably doesn't represent the best value. We'll see. I don't think he's so badly injured that he's going to miss months.

Probably same result as when we try to hit on draft picks.. Anyway here we go ;)

QB (2) J.Garoppolo, J.Brissett
RB (5) L.Blount, J.White, D.Foster, B.Bolden, J.Develin
WR (5) C.Hogan, A.Dobson, J.Edelman, M.Mitchell, M.Slater
TE (4) R.Gronkowski, M.Bennett, C.Harbor, A.Derby
C (2) D.Andrews, J.Kline
G (4) J.Thuney, S.Mason, T.Karras, J.Cooper
T (3) N.Solder, M.Cannon, L.Waddle
DE (5) T.Flowers, C.Long, J.Sheard, R.Ninkovich, G.Grissom
DT (4) M.Brown, A.Branch, A.Johnson, V.Valentine
ILB(2) D.Hightower, K.Grugier-Hill
OLB(3) J.Collins, B.Mingo, S.McClellin
CB (5) M.Butler, L.Ryan, C.Jones, J.Coleman, C.LeBlanc
SS (4) P.Chung, J.Richards, N.Ebner, B.King
FS (2) D.McCourty, D.Harmon
ST (3) S.Gostkowski, R.Allen, J.Cardona

Total players: 53

PUP: Amendola, Vollmer, Jackson and Lewis.

QB: Waste of time > Looking forward to week 5 already :)
RB: I think DJ beats out Gaffney.. Reason is, DJ wont make it to PS, Gaffney could do to he's injury history.
Bolden can spell Blount if needed be plus he is a ST ace.
WR: Going with Dobson aslong Mitchell is hurt, later Amendola could replace him.
TE: Patriots will play 2+ TEs for most plays so atleast 3 makes the roster + Develin. And I dont think Derby makes it to PS.
OL: Jackson and Vollmer are on pup, and gives depth in a unusual way.
EGDE: Lots of players are banged up atm, so need them all.
DT: That's the hard one for me. Johnson adds something they rest don't. Branch could be be gone, but keep him instead of Knighton.. Still I could see them keep Knighton and Branch and let Johnson go.
LB: Comes down to Ninko/ McClellin how ready they are, since I cut Freeney. KGH has upside vs Freeney and gunner on ST.
CB: I would cut Coleman and go with Roberts instead, do to size. But I dont see BB doing so and LeBlanc beats J.Jones as 5th CB. I know he was gunner on ST vs Panthers, I think it was do to KGH sickness.
S: Ebner and King are very strong ST ace's and Patriots, atleast for the first 4 weeks, gonna win ugly. A strong ST helps.

I think DJ Foster just cost Bolden his job last night. Pats have plenty of good STers.

Jones' ST play also is playing a factor in my thinking.

No way Foster makes it to PS.

Next year he will be better than White.

Foster and Gaffney are different types of RBs

Created with Pats Picker: Pats Picker 2015

Suspended - TFB
PUP - Seabass, Jonathan Cooper, Dion Lewis, Danny Amendola, Shea McClellin
Practice Squad - Chris Harper, DeAndre Carter, Devin Lucien, Chris Barker, Darryl Roberts, Jonathan Jones
Tough Cuts - Keshawn Martin, Cameron Flemming, Brandon King

I figure the RB, TE and DT situations will work themselves out by the time Brady and some PUP players get back. In the meantime I think a RB and TE heavy offense could suit Jimmy...quick passes, mismatches with linebackers, easy reads, screens, draws/trap plays etc. That said, nice to see Hogan get going tonight.

Would not be surprised to see Nink get some work at LB...Valentine maybe unimpressive enough to sneak onto practice squad? 3rd round pick but considered a sizable reach if I remember correctly.

OL remains my biggest concern. Question marks around every player except maybe David Andrews.

Thoughts?
No offense but “Valentine may be unimpressive enough to sneak onto the practice squad” is one of the dumbest things I have heard on this board.

First time i have done a week 1 roster as I tend to focus on the final team but...

QB (2) J.Garoppolo, J.Brissett - No surprises here.

RB (6) L.Blount, T.Gaffney, J.White, B.Bolden, J.Develin, D.Foster - Stash Foster for 4 week then try to slide him on the PS when everything settles. Also we will be running a lot these first 4 weeks so...

WR (5) J.Edelman, C.Hogan, K.Martin, M.Mitchell, M.Slater - Amendola starts the year on the PUP and Dobson is cut.. Just did not show enough and lack of STs mean you have to show a good bit.

TE (3) R.Gronkowski, M.Bennett, A.Derby - No other TEs really worth carrying IMO.

C (1) D.Andrews - Also other Guards can back up Center

G (4) J.Thuney, T.Karras, S.Mason, J.Kline - Cooper is cut sadly but i like this group overall. Baker to PS. Jackson to PUP.

T (3) N.Solder, L.Waddle, M.Cannon - Flemming to the PS and we go light cause Vollmer will come back and no need to carry a guy on the 53 who will make the PS.

DE (4) R.Ninkovich, J.Sheard, T.Flowers, C.Long - Grissom goes to the PS. He will make it.. Also McCellin can be an DE too when needed.

DT (5) M.Brown, V.Valentine, A.Branch, M. Kuhn, A.Johnson - Knighton Cut and Kuhn barely makes it cause another big body seems smart. Johnson makes it as an interior pass rusher. We could easily cut Kuhn though as i think Brown/Valentine/Branch can handle the load and all be effective.

ILB(2) D.Hightower, J.Freeny - Freeny makes it though i am questioning it. I just don't see it but BB likes him. I'd rather cut him and keep someone else. I do get he is a big LB though.

OLB(4) J.Collins, S.McClellin, B.Mingo, K.Grugier-Hill - Mingo stays no matter what for at least a few weeks. Try to slide a few guys on the PS.

CB (6) M.Butler, L.Ryan, C.Jones, J.Coleman, J.Jones, C.LeBlanc - In the end I cut Roberts and hope he makes the PS. Personally I would keep all 3 and cut Coleman but i don't think we will. Roberts is the worst STs player of the 3 IMO so that seals it i think.

SS (3) P.Chung, J.Richards, N.Ebner - Richards had a bad game but still makes it. King does not. We have other STs that are good and can play other positions so no need to keep any more specialist after this point.

FS (2) D.McCourty, D.Harmon - No surprise.

ST (3) S.Gostkowski, R.Allen, J.Cardona - Yep.

Total players: 53
I do not see them cutting Cooper, they paid him $2M already.

King was 4th in the league in special teams tackles as a rookie
+ BB like special teams aces (a lot)
= King will make the team.

Brandon Bolden is here for two reasons : Hes arguably the best RB I'm Pass Protection (highly coveted by BB) and ST play (he's really good).

The good thing for him.. our RBs minus him right now are pretty meh in pass protection...

Bad side : there's a bunch of athletic freaks on defense who's only hope of sticking to the team is ST, competition is fierce.

Point: If DJ Foster and Tyler Gaffney can become adequate pass protectors (something probably being monitored closely in practice now) and offer more to the offense (in terms of rushing and receiving )... there's a good chance bolden will be a casualty.
At that point then, you have a new competition going on as the season starts.

Leblanc vs. Roberts vs. J. Jones is such a tough call. There is a chance, maybe a pretty good chance, that none of them make it to the PS.

I think James White is cut. For a 3rd down back he is to 1 dimensional. 22 rushes for 56 yards 2 Tds. I would keep Foster and Gaffney.

Not to sure about that.

Jonathan Jones made a huge case for himself last night in the ST game. He also has potential upside and gives depth at CB Brandon King doesn't have that upside and isn't S depth. Plus Slater and Ebner are nailed in for roster spots as ST aces. Not to mention he just traded for Mingo who is a good ST player.

James White is an absolute lock to make the team. When he touches the ball he gain yards and 1st downs. He is a keeper

Are you allowed more than 1 IR designated to return?

No. While they altered the rule so that you don't have to specify which player you're going to bring off the list, you still can only bring one player back. It's an easy rule to fix, but the NFL seems to want to take half measures, as is the wont.

I read it wrong, I thought you were implying they could take more than one on "designated for return" not specifying who it was when they went on IR.... That's what I get for posting before my third cup of Dunkin'

Well, it looks as if we can add Freeny to the "definitely making it" list:

I’m told it’s a 2-year extension for #Patriots LB Jonathan Freeny. Core special teams player and an athletic backup for Jamie Collins

I think someone will give roberts a chance if he doesn't make the team. He has the size and the athleticism.

While it has been a gr8 TC and we are all enjoying the deep roster and young talented players vying for roster spots, we are going to hate the final cut down.

It will be like an inverse draft for the Pats.....

"With the first priority waiver claim of the final cut down, the L.A, Rams have claimed Jonathan Jones corner back from Auburn via the New England Patriots"

"With the second priority waiver claim of the final cut down, the Cleveland Browns have claimed Ted Karras, offensive guard from Illinois via the New England Patriots"......

This is gonna suck!

hopefully BB is working the phones to get some value before we have to cut guys for nothing in return.
