Shea McClellin signs with Patriots.

It's not my money, so no ****s will be given by me.

He's been played in roughly 6 or 700 different systems and his weight has ballooned around.
Sounds like all the more reasons not to give him the contract they did.
Guess you've never heard of Mike Vrabel and Rob Ninkovich.
So he's white and been a bust so that means he'll definitely be as successful here as Vrabel? Come on.
That would be Jamie Collins in college.
Terrible comparison. This guy is not in the same universe as great of an athlete as Collins is.

I'd just like to point out that BB didn't pay Ninkovich the 2009 equivalent of 3 years/$12M and probably didn't pay Vrabel that much before either had proven anything.

And Mcclellin is not even expected to be a starter....he's a backup linebacker.

Does anyone know how much the cap gonna increase over the next 3 years? Maybe this deal makes sense relative to that......

Especially when our starters will be on about 10m per year each.

Yes Vrabel and Ninko are white, just like McClellin. Very observant.

Still doesn't hide that they were nobodies before they put on a Patriots jersey and became key players on championship teams.

If he works out you get a #3 LB for 3 years. If he doesn't he's gone and it cost $3.5m...(cap will continue to go up every year)

Also I'll wait to see how this breaks down incentive-wise based and if part of the gtd $3.5m is a signing bonus

Unsure why everyone is so upset about this. It's not our money. They can afford his cap hit this year. His deal won't prohibit other, future deals. The Patriots obviously see something they think they can work with. He'll have a role next year, and I'll bet he does just fine.

I can't quite fathom why you're being so irrational. It's not like he's being paid an enormous amount. It's a low risk move by the Patriots with very little guaranteed. I don't see the problem.

The money is still too high for my liking for a guy that's been a complete bust like McClellin. To me these kind of bad contracts add up. They could have signed an impact player for the money they're blowing on Cannon/McClellin.

I don't know how high you think his ceiling is.... at least with Forte, you know you're paying for an elite talent. Has Mcclellin done anything to command this much money?

I dunno. Has Hogan? Hogan is being paid more.

So I suppose I could sit here and grumble about BB. Maybe he thinks that McClellin has the potential and wants to have him under contract in case they can't sign DH or JC.

Exactly. We're paying him $3.5 million. If he turns it around with the team and becomes the player we hope he does, he'll make up to $12 million. If he doesn't pan out, he's never going to see $12 million.

This is the problem. He hasn't been a complete bust. When moved to ILB, he was reasonably productive. Not a world beater, but reasonable. It's not his fault he was drafted in the first round just the same it wasn't Ras-IR's fault the Patriots drafted him in the first round (edit at the top of the second round).

To me, this has Akeem Ayers reclamation project written all over it.

I'm not dissing Belichick. I don't know the slightest thing about building a team. But at this point, I think getting a high-impact player like Forte would've been tantamount to the Corey Dillon signing...and he came pretty cheap too!

It's not a bad contract. We didn't blow money on him, we payed him $3.5 million. The three year total doesn't matter. He won't be here if he doesn't prove to be worth it.

Hogan was an undrafted player who has improved every year (well, seemed to stay the same from 2014 to 2015). McClellin is a 1st round bust who has been handed a starting role each of the past 3 years and squandered each opportunity.

Also, as I mentioned before in this thread, Hogan and McClellin have very similar contracts but Hogan's bonus is bigger. However, WRs tend to make more than ILBs. So the numbers just don't balance. I don't hate this signing because I think there's actually a decent chance he pans out and is at least average, but after seeing the numbers, I don't love it anymore.

Just a small nitpick, but Ras-IR was actually the first pick of round 2. Was a big deal, we were supposed to have millions of trade suitors willing to give up a boatload (they say that about the 33rd pick every year) and we end up taking this guy.......damn.

What pisses me off the most about the McClellin signing is that the FO is too busy signing JAGs like him
and NOT BUSY ENOUGH trying to find and sign a starting-caliber LG and LT.

Thanks for the correction. The amendment has been made.

Captain, whenever I see you're the last post in a thread, my first thought as I click is "let's see what negativity he added to the discussion."

Maybe it's time to take a step back and try to fix whatever has you so pissed off.
