Should Pats extend Brady?

They can't afford to, they have to re-sign Jamie Collins by 2019.

Where are you getting these dates from?

Collins is in the final year of his 4 yr rookie deal.

Doug Kyed and Mark Daniels (who we know actually cover the team) are not impressed. Meanwhile, this Doug Moore guy and "PatriotsExtra" are busy patting each other on the back for what seems to be basically making up the same story.

Brady will be 39 next year. Id like to play this as safe as possible. You never know when the drop off year is coming and how big it will be when it happens.
Eh. I don't think Brady's gonna hang around if he starts to suck just to pick up a paycheck.

Figured it was BS

I would love Tom Brady to sign a 10 year 2m a year contract. all Guaranteed. lol

A big **** you to the league. So the longer he plays the more knawing it gets for other fans and teams

Am I the only one who doesn't care if Brady sucks when he is 42, 43, 44? I personally think he will retire when he knows his skill set has diminished but he has earned the right to play as a Patriot until he sees fit. 4 SB wins and going to the AFC Championship almost every year earns you that right.

Let me clarify... I am as much a Brady fan as a Pats fan. I think Brady is going to play at a higher level than most QBs until he is in his mid 40s.

All I am saying is .... as a Pats fan I am willing to deal with a not so great season or 2 if and when Brady reaches the point where he should retire. I want Brady to retire a Patriot no matter what and if that means putting up with a bad season or 2 than so be it.

Well then they either need to get a source to tell them the report is false or stop whining about.

But just because two guys who have never to my recollection broken a Pats story don't like it I'll change the title

Whatever contract Brady accepts, I think we can safely assume that it will make it unappealing for the team to either cut or trade him. I would expect multiple years, a no trade clause and a significant reduction in the salary he demands.

Every fan has a preface for how their beloved players wind down their careers. Some fans care about the player having a graceful exit where others are more concerned about the success of the team.

I was out in LA this past week and my buddy is a die-hard Lakers fan is pissed as hell that Kupchack and the Buss kids sucked up to Kobe and gave him all that cash to be absolutely worthless these last few years.

For a couple of reasons, if Tom starts to suck I want him gone. One, the team winning superceeds everything. Second, I couldnt bare to see Tom be a 2015 Manning in the regular season.

Unless Brady is planning to retire after the 2017 season, I think that they should either extended him or expect to look at trade offers after the 2016 season.

Exactly. As a 1970s-1990s Celtics fan I saw first hand what happens when you hold on to your faded stars too long. You f*ck up the team and hurt it, possibly severely, for years.

Absolutely. Watching LB, Kevin, Chief and DJ decline in play was hard to watch. While I thought under the circumstances guys like Reggie, Dee Bown, Brian Shaw were nice players they didn't make up for the loss in production and the team, they were still very good but not championship-caliber. If <gulp> Bias had developed like we thought he would they would have won one more in the 1980s.

It different with every sport for sure but if you are going to keep an aging star around you need to surround him with talent. Look at SA w/ Duncan. Hes averaging under 10ppg and only playing 1/2 the game now but has guys like Brown and Aldridge kicking ass.

I kinda think Denver successfully did that with PM. Defense. Running game. Good receiving targets, etc.

With the exception of the running game, the Pats are set up for that same scenario. If he is still healthy, 2018 Brady does not need to be 2015 Brady.

Kyed broke the Cameron Fleming practice squad signing this past fall, as well as the Asante Cleveland and Joey Iosefa practice squad promotions during the season. Daniels has been credited with the first report that Jonas Gray was late for practice last year, again when Gray was cut, and more recently the Kevin Snyder promotion last week. They don't remotely belong in the same conversation as a guy whose claims to fame are contributing to a fantasy site and hosting a fantasy podcast.

If he isn't able to maintain starter ability then I'd love him to stay on as backup, if not to mentor than actually play

Brady has made it clear he isn't interested in backing up.

If brady is still on this team in 2018 what do we do about garoppollo? We need someone to take the reigns from brady once he retires other wise if brady plays past that and garoppollo leaves once brady retires its gonna be the 70s/80s/90s patriots all over but im pretty sure if they keep brady theyll have a plan in set for when he retires to keep this team afloat

The ultimate FU to the league would be for Brady to play for the veteran minimum, free up 10M in cap space, go & sign the best free agents possible, and tell Goodell to F himself...of course, the players' union might have a big problem with Brady doing that....lets be honest, I think the guy could "afford" to play for free if he wanted to...

Would the NFLPA allow that? Do they have a say in that?
