Should we try to pick this guy up? He is probably going to get traded, I'd love a 2nd TE that can make plays and I think he would pose nightmare in the playoffs on teams.
49ers are open to trade offers for this guy...

It would certainly be an exciting prospect to get that athletic freak on the team but I see two problems.

1. It will take away playmaking opportunities for our playmakers. Having Gronk, Edelman, Lafell and Lewis together substantially reduced the opportunities for Amendola against Miami. Adding Davis in anything more than a bit part roll would reduce opportunities for one of those four.

2. Well there's Michael Williams. He could take his snaps I suppose. Except, with the issues we have at tackle, having two excellent blocking TEs helps support the tackles. Swapping Williams for Davis would weaken that aspect of the game.

I would love to see what BB, McDaniels and Brady could do with Davis but because of the issues above, I think his addition would somewhat more marginal than one might suppose.

Why do we need 4 TE's? How would this help us in any way?

What would the cap implications be? Not good, I'd think.

I haven't watched him this year so I can't comment on now, but for the past few years Vernon has been an excellent blocker.

We probably won't make the trade, but if we did, an offensive set with Gronk, Chandler, Williams, and Davis in the red zone tickles my loins.

He's faster than most.

It's not too hard to think how a 250lb TE that runs in the low 4.4s might help an offense.

Edit: Assuming he hasn't lost his speed.
So he can be on the bench and play a few snaps a game? With our O line depth issues, we're not benching Williams and his blocking ability for Davis.

Has Vernon's blocking ability dropped off this year? Because for the past few years blocking has been a big strength for him.

That's a point I made earlier and a fair one. But I'm guessing if BB trades for him, he's probably got a plan.

Nice player but CB and OL depth seem to be the areas that need the most attention during the trade deadline.

To be honest, I haven't seen him so can't comment. Maybe he's good enough to make Williams expendable as a blocker. If so, then that renders my second 'objection' moot.

So the other teams who reportedly hate us will trade us Calvin Johnson, Vernon Davis and Sean Smith for peanuts.
Plus we will find a way to fit these players under the cap.
Also Calvin and or Vernon will come in learn the system and the Patriot way and not upset the offensive machine we already have.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

I'm currently looking around the Internet for any word about his play this year but have found nothing so far.

But assuming his blocking is on par as previous years then I could imagine BB and Josh having fun with the versatile schemes four big capable tight ends could provide. Imagine Gronk, Scott, Williams, Davis, and LeGarrette for good measure on the field at the same time...in the playoffs...against the Colts.

I'm sorry I'm starting to get a little hot over here :p

I'm not sure any TE we pick up now will be able to have a huge "all-around" impact by the end of the season. TE is the hardest offensive position to learn on the Patriots (next to QB). They have to know everything that the WRs know and everything the OL know. That's why hooman stuck around so long. I'm not sure Davis would have a big impact this year.

Let Chandler marinade a little bit. By the time playoffs roll around, he will be having a huge impact against teams that focus on shutting down Gronk.

Not that we need Davis with Chandler but no way Davis will make anywhere near the 7 mil a season he is now as his contract is up EOY. If he wants to get a ring and take a reasonable salary to go to a team that has a chance I can see that.

Also lets not compare Williams and Davis as blockers. Williams is 6'6" 304 lbs and 25 years old. A good enough blocking TE to play OT.

Davis is 6'3 250 and 31. He is 15 lbs heavier than Tim Wright and an inch shorter. Davis is also a bit of a big mouth
