Why in the world would they settle after all of this? As you said, they've still got a magic bullet in the chamber when it comes to the appeal process. There's no way in hell they are going to fold like a cheap lawn chair at this stage in the game.
50k dollar fine? LOL. This guy could've tried to do a little better with his piss poor attempt at spreading "news."
So, he's basically just SoV all over again? Describing him as "Pro Brady" doesn't do it justice. Everyone with half a brain knew that there was going to be a suspension, not a 25k dollar fine, and suggesting strong punishments for the Colts as well (like it was ever about them or anyone else) is just whacky.
That doesn't mean much. Many professionals on Twitter buy followers to improve their brand.
The guy is legit in the financial industry though. But I'm not sure why he'd have this scoop before guys like Schefter.
Perhaps the NFL feels that if they settle they won't need to explain anything except that they wanted to put the past behind them for the good of the 2015 season.
Losing in court (while being able to appeal still) means that the first judge is throwing the Wells Report and the 3+m spent on that and legal expenses and its all for basically nothing except a few more years of legal fees.
If the NFL knows they can't win in court, then a settlement is the next best thing to a victory they can claim simply because it won't be a flat out defeat.
Settling with Brady also appeases to many owners who want this over. How long will Goodell keep his job if he continues to fight a losing battle (potentially a multi year ordeal) bringing bad press to the brand?
Bad press for Brady is also bad press for the NFL.
I'm not saying I believe this guy, I want to, but the NFL settling if they really have no chance makes a ton of sense to me. The tide truly does seem to be turning, even at the club ownership level. A month or two ago Goodell had 32 owners at his back. Now there are rumors that half the clubs think this whole situation is a disgrace and distraction for the 2015 season, and I imagine more and more will feel that way as the season draws nearer.
As you said--anything is possible. I'd have believed this report a helluva lot more had it come out a week or so ago in the early days of the owner's meetings. I can't possibly see how they didn't bring it up then, or why they'd suddenly have reason to tuck tail and run now, but we'll all know soon enough.
