Will Amendola be the only move we make at WR?

I expect them to draft someone who can work the outside, this draft is supposedly deep with WR. Eventually they are just going to have to hit on one who can contribute solidly if they want to stop playing these cat-and-mouse games with FA receivers. People seem to automatically discount the idea that the Pats could actually draft a WR who can contribute (or even get on the field) in his rookie year.

I'm not expecting it, just saying that they have to hit one time to alleviate some of the pain at this position. One time, dealer!

They haven't drafted a WR who could contribute since Branch and Givens in 2002.

i expect some very low level guys. brady will just have to pray AH and gronk stay healthy..if not...oh boy with amendola slated to miss at least 4 games

What happens if amendola (which he will) and gronk or hern misses time? Then we are truley F'ed

Aside from Edelman re-signing our best options at WR are:

Jennings
Cruz (unlikely with draft pick involved)
Danario Alexander (RFA)
Domenik Hixon
Darrius Heyward-Bay
Randy Moss (lol)
Donald Jones
Brandon Stokely
Brando n Gibson
Donte Stallworth

Outside Jennings or a first round draft pick this board will never be happy

Keeping Lloyd and a second rounder would be Ok with me.

Embrace the DA/Kamar Aiken/Andre Holmes offense

I am glad we have a prophet on the board. Perhaps you can predict how many drops Welker will make before we see a Manning face.

What I wish they would do:

Sign Edelman, Trade for Fitzgerald (& he restructures), re-sign Woodhead, re-sign Stallworth, draft WR, cut LLoyd

Re-sign Talib

Re-sign Vollmer

Letting Welker go tells me that the Patriots want to focus their offense completely around Gronkowski and Hernandez. The WR and RB will be complementary elements to the attack. 2010 and most of 2011 proved that when both are healthy together, it is a devastating duo.

So you figure, Gronkowski and Hernandez would be the de-facto Number 1 and 2 targets, respectively.

At WR, the Patriots have signed Amendola and have reportedly agreed to terms with Donald Jones.

I see Amendola as a more traditional Z receiver and not a true Welker replacement. In regard to Depth, I think Amendola will turn out to be the Number 2 WR. Donald Jones is solid, but if he is starting there are serious issues at hand. He could be a Number 3 or 4 option. So too could Edelman if he is resigned.

For a Number 1 Receiver, the Patriots need to draft a big, strong, speedy player in the draft, or sign someone who has those traits (DHB is a classic example. A home run hitter). If Brandon Lloyd is retained, I'd expect him to fill this role.

My vision for WR depth would be as follows then:

1 - Brandon Lloyd <Or Draft Pick/FA, preferably)
2 - Danny Amendola
3 - Donald Jones (Backup X receiver)
4 - Julian Edelman (Backup Z receiver)
5 - Matthew Slater

There is also room for an additional WR if needed. I just think that in retrospect, if the offense is going to be run through the Tight Ends, and they stay healthy, the Patriots don't need big time WR.

It was shown so many times last year that without a true deep/outside threat teams will flood the middle, dare us to run and commit to it

All of which will work out ok mostly in the regular season but will come unstuck as soon as we play a smash mouth aggressive defense

As the last 3 or 4 SB winners have proved you need a tough D and an O with legitimate deep threats

As it stands right now we have neither

That's a very weak WR group.

The Pats aren't going to be as top-heavy at WR as they were last season. That's pretty inevitable. I think the bigger issue is making sure they can do better than Branch as the #4 who becomes the #3 with an injury.

On your list Branch may be #2, not 4 or 3.

Pats WR corp will be the weakest we have seen in years this season would be my guess

I could see if Brady still have a good 6 years left...but only 3...gotta give him someone at WR...

I'd feel pretty good about Deandre Hopkins in a Patriots uniform come draft day. Big guy with a lot of power.

I think you are 100% right...UNLESS the Pats make a move somewhere here....this will be a very weak WR corps this year. BB is obviously going to make use of the RB out of the backfield or in the flat more this year...and rely HEAVILY on our 3 TE sets. But we will once again be predictable...........and there is a very good chance 2 out of the 3 TE's do NOT make it through all 16 games again this year. Gronk and Hernandez have proven to be incredibly injury prone......call them freak injuries for Gronk or whatever...but the injury bug is finding the guy. Hernandez has been pretty Fragile as well over his career here.... Amendola has NEVER stayed healthy for an entire season. For BB to say "Oh it's ok, I have Wes' productivity covered....Danny's coming in!" ...is ludicrous. Wes was Ironman....Danny so far has been "Glassman". Don't get me wrong...Amendola has EQUAL if not MORE talent than Wes.....but he has not shown nearly the durability of Welker. We once again need some deep threats to compliment the Offense....Bringing back Lloyd, Branch, and Stallworth to go with Amendola is just not going to cut it....

It is true that this year's draft is "Rich" in WR talent.....But when was the last time BB has been successful drafting a WR??? Maybe this will be the year....

I'd like to see our defensive needs met thru free agency -- a safety, a DE backup, a starting DT, and re-signing of Talib

I'm okay with going with
Amendola, Lloyd as our first two options as if everyone is healthy, 95% of the time we'll be in 2WR, 2TE, 1RB formations.

I think we still need 1 more good outside-the-tackles receiving option incase of injury or just to rotate thru to give other guys a breather --

And I'm okay with that option coming from the draft -- if it's in the first two rounds. We wouldn't need to rely on them right away, so they'd have most of the season to develop and hopefully by playoff time they can be an impact.

Randy Moss is available.... just sayin! :)

We still have Jake Ballard that almost everyone here forgets. I can see him filling in for Ahern. Him and Gronk the new TE dual, Ahern converted to a receiver is not something that would surprise me. Though Ahern's alligator hands can't be a good idea while running down-field on the outside.
