The 2013 Prospect Thread

I'm a bit confused. I gather this is a mock you did for the 49ers, since at one point you refer to Le'Veon Bell complementing LaMichael James. It would help to be clear.

You have a lot of good prospects listed, though I think the valuations are a bit off. No way Brian Winters lasts to the 6th round. I love Brandon Williams, but think he goes earlier. Not sure Reed and Toilolu come out this year.

My mistake. I had written 49ers, but I must have taken it out.

I agree that the valuations could be off. That takes a lower priority when I do these things to picking good players. I figure that come draft day, those things will be decided for you anyway.

On the Winters pick specifically, scouting linemen is quite tedious. I just haven't had the desire to change that pick since his stock went up.

Interested as to why you want both Toilolo and Reed. Do you see Vernon Davis leaving SF? That's rather high for a #3 tight end.

Senior Bowl is going to be superb this year for evaluating. Amongst those announced just today:

Dallas Thomas
Arthur Brown
Johnthan Banks
John Jenkins
Reid Fragel

Excellent. Will love to see/get reports of Fragel.

Dallas Thomas has gone under the radar a bit. He's a strong day 2 alternative (if he lasts that long; some still project him as a possible late 1st round pick) at guard.

I'd take him in the first. Have him behind Cooper, Ansah, Hankins, J. Williams and then Thomas, Austin, Woods all level. Somehow I've got to fit Lane Johnson in there somehow too.

Bear in mind that whilst I like Terrance Williams, I've pushed Austin and Robert Woods above him just as better fits. I've seen Robert Woods described as being like Reggie Wayne. We know BB likes Wayne (would have signed him ahead of Lloyd) and this makes me think Woods might be on our board if he declares.

Not looking to re-ignite WR debate :)

It's interesting to me that Rob Rang currently has Jesse Williams ahead of Johnathan Hankins on his Big Board (he also has Jonathan Jenkins ahead of Hankins, which is more questionable), noting:

"In terms of pure talent, Hankins deserves to be ranked among the top five prospects in the country. With light feet and shocking overall athleticism for a man listed at 6-3 and 320 pounds, Hankins can be a superstar. Unfortunately, his motor too often appears to in neutral rather than overdrive."

Williams doesn't produce stats, but he does have a rare ability to tie up blockers, and can push the pocket. I've seen several others rank him ahead of Hankins. BB will have the best info on the Ohio St. prospects - especially linemen - of anyone, from both Urban Meyer and Mike Vrabel, so he'll know everything there is to know about guys like Hankins and Reid Fragel.

Dallas Thomas and Lane Johnson both seem to me like top 50 guys. I'm not sure they are clear cut 1st round picks, though either could end up being in the mix before all is done. I'll defer to your judgment on Thomas for now. I think that's a pretty good list, though I have "trade back" if Hankins, Williams, Cooper and Ansah are off the board. I also have Sam Montgomery in the back of my mind as a possible faller, though I need to think about him a lot more. And I haven't ruled out guys like Dion Jordan, Alec Ogeltree, or Kyle Van Noy, possibly with a trade back. I probably value those guys more than the WRs who would be available in the late 1st.

I think that's probably right as far as fit goes. What do you think of Cordarelle Patterson? WRs aren't my thing, but he intrigues me as far as WRs go.

Also, how would you compare Woods to Markus Wheaton? Wheaton seems to have some Reggie Wayne to him, from what I can tell.

Really confused by Patterson. His size/speed combo should make him a lock for the 1st but as a receiver, not so sure. Wouldn't object if we take him, even in the first, because there is so much upside but if Welker is gone, I'm not sure he's ready to step in early.

Woods v Wheaton is interesting.I'd take Wheaton personally but Woods could be an elite slot guy. Wheaton could play the slot but I think he works better on the outside eventually stepping in to Lloyd's shoes.

Yeah? By who? :D

The best NFL comp I have for Markus Wheaton is a more reliable Jeremy Maclin.

Thomas Melton @ NFLDraftMonsters has done a number of scouting reports on OL (Dallas Tjomas, Brian Winters, Jonathan "with the 32nd pick NE select" Cooper). Here's his on Oday Aboushi who haven't had a chance to look at yet:

hat is awesome to watch about Aboushi though is his ability to get out on screens and lead block. This goes back to his natural athletic ability, but Aboushi gets out on screens easily and finds defenders in the 2nd level to make a good play into a great play.

Might have to take a look.

I can see Cooper slipping. DeCastro fell to 24 last year and Zeitler went 27. Warmack will probably be picked outside of the Top 10-12. We're picking at 28th as of now. Wouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities to drop to our pick. I wouldn't have a problem with him because it would upgrade two positions. RG and move Connolly to C.

I like Dallas Thomas. I do see him as a top 50 pick (not at guard). He is a technician with a good feel for the game and solid fundamentals.

One more sleeper: Jason Weaver is the Dallas Thomas of Conference USA. Obviously, much weaker competition, but he's likely to go undrafted and could be good value as a free agent signee. I'd take him in the late fourth, early fifth round.

Hey guys.

Ive been reading this board for a while but had not made an account until now. I love reading your guys thoughts on the draft and wanted to enter the discussion.

I was curious as to why Xavier Rhodes has not been mentioned much, if it all. Hes a tall physical corner who excels in press man. I think he'd be a good fit in our new system and like BB says, you can never have enough good DBs. Depth is key but Im not entirely sure we must spend a 1st rounder on secondary depth. What do you think of someone like Logan Ryan from Rutgers if he declares?

Like most of you I would love Ziggy Ansah, a dynamic DT like Hankins or Richardson if they fall, an OT that could come in and start day 1 if we look to let Vollmer walk or trading back if the value is not there.

Welcome to the board!

I'm probably not the best person to respond to your Rhodes query. I've been pretty vocal about not wanting to go DB early in the draft - I think we have enough youth at the position. And if I did, Rhodes wouldn't be my personal choice. He's big and physical, but I'm not sure he's fluid enough or has loose enough hips to be a great outside CB. I haven't watched a ton of him, so I would defer to others, but I haven't been that overwhelmed.

I'll second that. I think I'd rather be given last rites than draft a cb early again. Let's sign Talib and try to build the rest of the defense. I'd like to give Dowling another year before I go there. One thing I like about Ansah is how our nickel package might look.

Hightower - Ansah - Wilfork - C. Jones

Mayo - ???

Talib McCourty Gregory Nickel Back?? Dennard
