ESPN reports Falcons head coach resigns to take head coaching job at University of Arkansas. Not sure yet if he will finish the season with Atlanta.

OT: Petrino leaves Atlanta for Arkansas

John Clayton reports on SportsCenter.

Can't say I blame him. Who would want to coach the Falcons?

The Falcons have a great owner in Arthur Blank. That dude is a quitter. What a loser.

hes the reason they are so bad.

Wow! He stumbled into a bad situation with Vick's problems. It cast a pall over the whole team. Maybe this will work out for all concerned.

Hmm.. I don't know if I would say Arthur Blank is a good owner. He's the one who INSISTED that the Falcons get Vick and he was out there supporting Vick prior to the indictments being handed down.

Petrino's situation went from bad to worse as soon as Vick got suspended from the league.

Also, I don't know if I can blame Petrino totally since I don't believe he had GM authority.

He left to take a much better job. IMHO, the ownership of the Falcons sux.

Blank is not a good owner? Dude, you truly have no clue.

Vick sold a sh_t ton of tickets but can't win games with his arm. Apparently Blank is an owner that cares more about ticket sales than championships... there's no room in the NFL for that mentality.

National... what makes Blank a good owner in your opinion?

wouldn't you want Kraft supporting Brady, if he was in a bad situation?

The guy spends money, hires the best coach he can get(which is why he went after Petrino who was considered a "catch"), and backs his coach/GM when they want to discipline out of line players(which is why he backed Petrino when he fined DeAngelo Hall). Has the guy made mistakes? Of course. so has Bob Kraft and Jerry Jones. However, nobody can argue that the guy wants to WIN. He spends the money. Not everyone can luck into a Tom Brady. I love Kraft and BB, but where would we be without the 6th rd pick from Michigan? You need some luck too. Jerry Jones didn't all of a sudden become a GREAT OWNER again this year. He always was. He just lucked into Tony Romo.

Call me old fashioned but I prefer an owner who stays in the luxury box during play. And as DaBruinz said, you've got a situation where the HC only has a certain amount of control over personnel decisions due to the presence of hands-on GM Rich McKay.

Atlanta is a tough place for pro sports. The fans are terrible there. Meanwhile, Petrino will be adored by the entire state of Arkansas now (as long as he has the same success as he had with Louisville).

The SEC is every NFL coaches' golden parachute.

Steve Spurrier

Of course Cowher lives one state over in N.C. One of the reasons he left Pittsburgh.
I think that would be a great fit. Best coach the Falcons ever had was Reeves and they forced him out.
Blank (looks a lot like Bud Abbott to me!) will give Cowher the keys.

Or another deal. How about Parcells as the G.M. and let him hire on one of his boys as HC (Al Groh?).

#1 job is QB hunting. Pennington? They are a running team. Not many better play action QB's. He doesn't need a big arm in Atlanta. Great TE and good running team.

Some coaches just aren't cut out for the pros, like Pete Carroll and Steve Spurrier. Not saying that's the case with Petrino, but maybe.

Do you work at the Home Depot or something? You can't be a falcons troll because the falcons don't have any fans anymore. What gives NSA?

He's done better than a few new coaches(Mangina and Cantwin) despite dealing with the Vick disaster. I wonder if last night's "Free Mike Vick" display from his players drove him over the edge?

I call it like I see it. Blank is also good friends with Kraft and has asked Kraft for advice many times. I read that. The guy WANTS to win. Maybe he needs to learn from his mistakes, but at least he wants to WIN and spends the money. He's not a Jeremy Jacobs. Hey, even Bob Kraft made mistakes back in the day. Remember Kraft with the "stopwatch" timing Tebucky Jones? Remember when Kraft employed the GM with "power" over the head coach with Bobby Grier/Pete Carroll the same way Blank had McKay/Petrino? Some of you act like Kraft never made mistakes either. Blank will be a great owner. The guy will leave no stone unturned in trying to get the very best head coach for the job. Hey, maybe he can use a little luck too and have a Tom Brady or Tony Romo fall out of the sky for him too.

Has this become a possible McDaniels destination after the end of the season? I sure hope not... I wouldn't take that job if I were him, unless he really just wants to take on a total rebuilding job.

ESPN reports he has stepped down and will not stay for the remainder of the season.
