Getting Into Kraft's Thought Process - Some Thoughts

Most interesting story to me is Mcdaniels, is he the HC in waiting if Bill stays?
Does he come with Mayo or Vrabel as HC?
What happens to Obrein?
McDaniels likely has a “duty to mitigate” in his Raiders contract, meaning he can’t literally sit on the beach for 4 years and collect his money. He has to seek employment to offset some (relatively insignificant) amount of the Raiders guarantees.

So assuming he has to work, it makes sense for him to work at the place and with the people that he’s comfortable with. The title probably isn’t as important here, as he’s making the same money for the next four years either way and he (probably) isn’t working toward another HC job ever again.

If anything, he could be QB coach. They draft a QB and keep Zappe to compete with veteran. Those 2 will need a delegated experienced coach.

My worry is that it isn't Zappe they decide to keep, but Mac, as McDaniels was the last person to get a good season from him.

I don't think that's necessarily true. The Raiders are giving him government unemployment, they're forced to honor a contract they signed with him. I doubt there's language in there that forces McDaniels to take token interviews to still be paid what the contract says he's owed.

That said, I highly doubt Josh wants to sit out and just collect a paycheck. MAYBE he sits a year, but the longer he's out, the less likely he is to be get back into a job (and still be successful with it).

As for him coming here, I would prefer a fresh offensive mind, but the positive to take from it would be he's unlikely to get a HC job again any time soon. So if the goal is continuity for a young QB, and you're not hiring an offensive guy to be your HC, then Josh is one way to accomplish that continuity.

I could actually see that too. As some time/separation passes in Jan, and depending on the OC - they could talk themselves back into allowing Mac to be the bridge. That's such a scary thought.
Everything is shaping up for a literal "run it back" - with a very similar result next season.

Mcd becomes a Dante, **** lebeau type permanent assistant.

This ignores that coaches watch tape, that McD was there to see as soon as defenses figured out what 10 couldn’t do, he fell apart, that year.
McD was the one protecting 10 from himself so he knows better than anyone that once figured out, he is toast.

OK, here's my Hot Take. We'll see how well it ages soon enough.

I think way too much is being read into the morning after press conference, going both ways. He didn't commit to giving up the GM duties in return for keeping his job, or anything remotely like that. He committed to absolutely nothing but a general willingness to work with everybody to make the team work better, which can mean literally anything, or nothing. Conversely, there was no "shot across the bow" other than him making it clear that he wants to keep his job, which isn't exactly a shocker. "If you want to fire me, fire me, but I'm not pretending I was actually quitting anyway" isn't some crazy stance for him to take.

I don't expect Belichick to stay on with diminished responsibility. He might promise to clean house around him on a bigger scale, bring in new personnel guys and build a bigger/better coaching staff, but ultimately he's either going to be at the top of the football pyramid, or he's leaving. People are understating what a major sea-change it would represent for a guy who became the GOAT coach precisely by being an all-controlling Emperor Napoleon of football to stop and say, "Actually, I need to divest myself of the draft and free agency and offensive staff decisions because I can't cut it anymore in multiple facets of being a head of football ops." I can see him doing that after leaving and taking a year or two off and reflecting on Life, the Universe and Everything, but not now.

100% dead on.

expand the staff, delegate more, transition over the next 2-3 years.

Kraft also has to consider that keeping BB (which might include a return to JMD) might have Mayo running for the hills.
Which means Stevie will be the DC, and more of a Belichick incestuous hold on the team.

Because if Kraft decides to keep BB, he'll likely want a 2-yr extension. There's no way BB is coaching on the franchise tag.

Literally everything any one of you is saying is pure speculation and an emotional reaction. So much uneducated garbage. Like the post above me "demote him to DC". Come on guys, be better than this drivel.

I expected a resolution by now. I wonder if Kraft is torn, or if the Pats are just waiting to secure a trade package from another team. Yesterday the rumor was that Bill was gone, then the counter rumor today that he could end up staying. I think the initial rumor is the truth and the possibility of him staying is a tactic to solicit trades. Although the Howe rumor about McDaniels coming back must have been leaked for a reason.
Maybe because alllllllll of this is a media construct and there never was any thought given to him moving on from Bill.

I don't think Kraft is firing Belichick at this point. They are working on the terms so Belichick can stay for one more year, what that entails.
I think he stays two more years. Next year's schedule looks tough. Rookie QB rough. Would RKK settle for another year of struggle if the OL was improved, anticipating payoff the following year? RKK isn't just looking at the season's record. Merchandise, attendance, will all figure into it. Should they pay a veteran like Cousins or Mayfield to hopefully get back on track? McDaniels was rumored to have favored Mayfield. I do think McDaniels will be back in some capacity. Don't know if that will work for BOB.

You sure about that? The Krafts have been at the bottom of the league when it comes to spending.
Please document

Yes, I believe that the Kraft's will spend $25M to protect their $6B investment. Of course, I do understand that some folks here think that they understand business better than the Kraft's.

As far as spending money on the patriot business

1) the cap is the same for everyone.

2) The Kraft's bought the patriots for one of the highest prices ever.

3) They have spent many millions on the stadium and on Patriot Place.

NO, NO, NO!

A draftee will not be ready to start the season. You are suggesting that we start the worst QB to start in Week 18 in the NFL.

If BB isn't willing to move on and RKK is not willing to fire him then BB is going to be here next year. In that case RKK, and/or Jonathan, needs to look at this as the time to put BB's succession plan into place with the objective of having a stable organization with talent on the field during the transition. With this perspective it is critical to partner with BB and avoid wasting time fighting. BB being willing to invest in QB, WR and OT is mandatory for this to work. Step 1 is to find BB's successor as GM who can at least be part of the team building this year to be ready to drive the bus in 2025. Realistically the GM must be someone BB trusts given the amount of time to make decisions and the need avoid squabbles. Per his contract BB will coach next year. Step 2 will be the new GM and the Krafts take the time to strategically plan the transition of coaching duties. The decision could be to extend BB a year to get the wins record if things go well.

It’s amazing to me that people create this perspective that relationships within the organization are combative and adverserial
Kraft and bb have worked together for more than 25 years. They have had more success together than any owner/hc/gm in the history of the sport. They have spent 25 years developing and honing a shared philosophy on how to run the organization and have success. For 25 years there has been a philosophy and a plan. Now suddenly people think there is distrust, ultimatums, diametrically opposed beliefs and in fighting.
There is a 25 year relationship with thousands of discussions, decisions, conversations, collaborations.

Why would a veteran not be able to play?

They have got to draft a QB or get a capable vet to go with that because the lack of a backup plan killed us this year.
