COLTS CLAIM RICE

With defensive end Dwight Freeney out for a week or possibly longer with a foot/ankle injury suffered on Sunday night against the Chargers, the Colts have claimed Simeon Rice on waivers from the Broncos, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

The Colts get Rice for seven games at a prorated base salary of $820,000, which equates to $337,000 over the last seven games of the year.

It could be a perfect move for Rice, since (as we heard it) Rice was blaming his move from right end to left end as one of the reasons for his inability to dominate in Denver. With Indy, Rice can slide back to the right side, in the spot vacated by Freeney.

And it's a low-risk move for the Colts. They get Rice for the veteran minimum, and as one league source pointed out it's possible that Rice's promise not to seek termination pay flows through to Indy, since Indy claimed the contract under which Rice made his commitment not to take the balance of his base salary if cut.

The development also means that most of the other franchises had a shot at Rice's veteran-minimum deal, given that a team's current record drives the waiver order. All of the other teams picking above the Colts opted to pass.

Good move or bad?

Rice isnt really done..honestly. Bronco fans were saying he was their best DE but he wasnt getting a lot of playing time. His injury is playable he said and he was ticked about his playing time. Colts are lucky..missing Freeney and getting a guy like Rice is great..hes been in their system.

Might be a Freeney insurance policy.

He's no Freeney.

Good move for the Colts.
They still have way too many holes on the team though.

Dont see him being much of a factor. Kindof late in the season to start being a factor for a new team. Situational pass rusher without the same skills that once made him great. The Colts are in big trouble right now, and if Freeney is out for any period of time, they'll be lucky to win that division.

Great move for them. No real downside.

Freeney injury is probably a bad one though, given how fast they moved.

A little reminder what St. Dungy's latest recruit had to say about Pat Tillman...

A pro athlete is someone like Simeon Rice, who shortly after Tillman left the NFL to join the Army Rangers said Tillman went into the army because ‘he really wasn’t that good anyway.’ Rice claimed Tillman could play for Arizona, but that was like the XFL. This is the same Simeon Rice was drafted by the Cardinals and played for them for five years.

It's a no risk move that could be a good move. I think a lot of us thought the Booger McFarland trade was a pretty weak trade, but they made it work. I'm never counting out the Colts after last season, injuries, whatever, they're still good.

Wow, they are hurting. Rice is toast, done, empty. If he is the best Indy can do, they are in deep doo doo.

its a good deal for the colts... more like an insurance policy... but if you look at the big picture, it seems that freeney will be out for a while... and simeon rice is a big, very big downgrade from freeney... claiming a veteran who is already cut by two teams looks like a desperate move... imo, rice doesnt command double-teams like freeney

I can't really speak to whether or not Rice is done as I haven't seen him play this year; however, I can say that the fact that he has such a friendly contract and was still able to clear 30 teams on waivers before he got to the Colts is not a ringing endorsement.

I think it could be a good move for them if the stars align, but it seems more like desperation to me given that most of the league passed on paying him the minimum. My bet is Freeney is done for the year.

If he'll play well for any team, it would be that team. I was expect him to either go there or to the Lions.

When the Pats make mince meat out of the Colts in the playoffs they can have a little Simeon Rice on the side. Mmmm mmmm mmm.

They should go after Jerry Rice too while they're at it

$3 million for half a season is a lot money. So you can rule out half of the teams, then you can rule out 3-4 defenses that is another 9 teams. So that leaves about 5 teams that he could possible play for. I think it will still do what they want, command a double team off the edge, which will all the LB to make the plays as they do now, and he will pick up a sack everynow and then.

Good deal for what they do.

Was he getting doubled in Denver?
