CASSEL HAS NOT SHOWN ANYTHING IN THE NFL. SCHAUB HAD prior to being traded. Stop making a fool of yourself.

Insert Rohan Davey....we've been down this road before. To some he was worth a first after Europe...before he was released.

Gutierrez will leap frog Cassel next year.

This might actually help Cassel a bit because teams might pay for potential much like the NBA where teams invest a high draft pick on the unknown versus the known.

I'm saying Cassel will fetch anywhere from a 2nd rounder to a 3rd or 4th. BB will not let him go for anthing less than that. There's a reason they kept Guitt.

Teams have done foolish things in the past. Look at Miami they spend high first on Ted Ginn. Chicago drafted a TE when they needed a QB. Teams do foolish things and I could see them giving a low 2nd for Cassel.

Many don't agree, but that's my opinion and we have many months for things to develop.

Many seem to forget that Houston and Atlanta also swapped spots in the first round.

Looks like at least one SF sports writer is seeing how this trade could have been a great one for the Pats

D’ OH! New England owns the 49ers’ 2008 No. 1 pick (thanks for reminding me)
By Tim Kawakami
Sunday, September 30th, 2007 at 10:15 pm in 49ers, NFL.

I’m piling on, at a much-too-late hour, but I’m doing it because it does get worse and worse, and yes, I forgot a major point in the wake of the 49ers’ mayhem earlier today:

* If Alex Smith is out for a long time, and if Trent Dilfer plays like he did today in Smith’s place, the 49ers might go 4-12 or 3-13 this season, and thus earn a VERY HIGH PICK in the 2008 draft.

I’d guess that if Smith misses 4 to 6 games, which would be my minimum guess, the 49ers will be no better than 6-10 this season, and that could be the No. 3-6 overall pick.

* But oops, thanks to the commenters for reminding me, the 49ers traded their 2008 first-round pick (and a 2007 No. 4–wait this gets amazing in a few grafs) to New England in the Joe Staley deal.

Yes. How could I forget?

Pats fan out here in SF.

Actually, I'm not sure this is a good thing for us. Smith absolutely sucks. The only reason the Niners have won 2 games (barely) is because of their defense. I actually think the Niners will do better with Dilfer in there and the only reason Smith has been playing is because its hard for a team to admit they spent so many $$$ on a bust (sort of like why Joey Harrington got so many chance in Detroit).

Ive heard that. So what basically is wrong with his game?

I'm sorry, you really need to stop. I mean, it's not like I don't hope you're right, but this is seriously a ridiculous theory. No one is going to give the Patriots a #2 or a #3 or a #4 for Cassel unless he, ya know...PLAYS IN A GAME (and plays well). You're really living in La-La Land on this one.

Right. We don't want SF to go 3-13 because Top-5 picks are curses, not blessings. If we get any better than #13, we should probably try to trade it for a #18 and a second pick.

I used to think that but it's a greatbargaining chip to drop down in round 1 and maybe pick up another high pick ('09 first?? for a team desperate enough)....

I have to admit, as a Pats fan I dont see too much of the Niners games, but when I do watch, Smith just doesn't seem to "have it." There's no spark in his play and you don't see his play lifting others around him (as a good QB should do). Rather, the niners are depending on Gore and thats the only reason they win games on the offensive side of things.

I'm also hearing a lot of excuses on sports talk out here like "he has no weapons," or "he has no OL", or "the coaching staff wont let him loose." But even if these we all true, you would still expect to see some flashes of brilliance--- and I dont see that. Finally, if its the coaching staff not letting him loose you have to wonder why that is.

Now on the D side of things, Patrick Willis is a stud --- I'm glad he's not playing in our division.

Smith made a huge jump from year one to year two and is now in his third season in the NFL. And, in his third season, I believe he's still the youngest starting quarterback in the NFL. He's throwing the ball to only two players of any worth, in Davis and Jackson, and Jackson seems to be comfortably outside of his best right now.

He has Frank Gore, an awesome TE and they traded for a #1 WR. And he has other decent WRs. No excuse.

What would kick ass is if the 49ers really TANK, we get a top 10 pick, trade it for a #1 toward the end of the first round and a #1 pick the following year - so essentially we get the #1 back and tell the NFL to F off.

He's 23, doesn't have a quality #1 wr, and has a young tight end that has not proven he's "awesome" by any stretch of the imagination.

Yeah, I'm not sure where the #1 WR thing came from. Darrell Jackson blows. I said in the offseason he was likely a downgrade from last year's Antonio Bryant. Reche Caldwell was our #1 WR last year - that didn't make him "a #1 WR".

Now, SF had a shot at Moss but went with the safer Darrell Jackson instead . . . :D

The 49ers winning their first two games have sorta messed up how people view them--if you watched those games, you'd see that their offense is really awful. They don't have a thousand yards for the season yet. I think they'll be lucky to win 6.

KNBR San Francisco is reporting Alex Smith is out for at least a month. I'll look for a link. For those that say it doesn't matter, Smith is lousy anyway, he's not that bad. He improved a lot last year, leading the team to great wins over Seattle in Seattle and then Denver to KO them from the playoffs. He might have regressed a little in the first 3 games this year, but his OL is horrible, can't really tell when he has no time. Dilfer has no chance now, unless they can shore up the OL somehow. He's a statue at 35 years old. The 49ers have a cupcake schedule, but they're a cupcake too. My WAG 6 - 10 or worse.

Most seem to be saying 4-6 weeks with is about what your report says. All is good :)

yeh they aren't going to go anywhere this year. Lawson and now SMith are out for extended periods of time. Gore always breaks down, and the right sid eof there line is bad. Kwame Harris hasnt improved at all. I can see them being a lottery pick team.

I share your view. I always am wary of veteran QBs. So many are good just because of their experience. My hope is for Smith to return in Week 11, breaking up any shot at continuity SF has at QB.

Dr. James Andrews has also determined that Smith will not need surgery. Chances are improving that he will return by Halloween. Regardless, they should have been 0-3 with him at QB, and 0-4 overall.

I hate the Murderers (allegedly) so much, that I'm still thinking of rooting for the 49ers on Sunday. I've loved listening this week to the sports talk stations here in Baltimore.
