The best thing with the first rounds also is the 5th year contract

People make such a big deal out of the cost of keeping both. Not sure I understand why this would be impossible -- give JG a long term deal with lots of guaranteed money and a YUGE signing bonus with small payouts while TB12 is on the squad.

Im starting to see the wisdom of trading Brady at the end of 2017. You get a boat load of picks and keep a very capable Starting QB who has yet to reach his prime. Seems like a win on all sides except for Brady of course.
If Brady was able to pull off something amazing, like play at a very high level for like 7 more years we would be the ones who missed out. Brady has really basically continuously gotten better and better with very minor dip in 2013 since he came back in 2009. Statistically and decision making he is exponentially better than he was when he won his first three Super Bowls. Brady keeps getting better, and is a one in a million player. And the fact that the best parts of his game really are decision making, seeing the game better than anyone else, the years of experiences actually improve his skill set. He said in an interview last years (strangely sounding very humble when he said it) that there is really very rarely any situation that he does not know exactly what to do any more pre-snap. (that is just a matter of execution.)

I think the Brady experience should be allowed to go 25 years.

it will be for two firsts.
It all depends on WHERE that first will be. If its in the top 5 then I'd take a 2nd in the next year. If it's in the middle then I'd need at least 2 other picks. If it's in the bottom third, then I'd need 2 firsts.

How do you know that? We have no idea if this guy is going to be a legitimate starter or he is a flash in the pan. People are so overrating his performance over 6 quarters. He was good, not great vs. Arizona and we have found out that the Dolphins' defense is awful.

If someone if willing to give a sweatheart deal for Garoppola, I am betting Belichick jumps at it.
This. Brady is one in a million and keeps getting better. He might be better in 4 years.

He wants to play

Trade Jimmy G to 49ers for there 1st (top 10) and a future 2nd. Allows us to keep developing Brissett and the GOAT can play 2-4 more years
Draft Brissett's replacement heir

Jimmy isn't going anywhere.
If it comes down to TB or Garropolo being traded, it won't be Brady

That's not only a guarantee, it's the right thing to do. We don't even know if JG is very good yet

Right...and the Pats had a first down on Miami's 21 when Brissett took over.

But that was the drive after the three I mentioned. He only played about four plays before the play he got injured and three of them were incomplete passes.

They came out passing, and Jimmy had that long TD pass to Hogan early on. As the breakdown I posted showed, they didn't simplify the passing game at all for Jimmy. They built a good lead fairly early on, which may have resulted in more runs, but they still passed the ball 33 times that game. Oh, and Jimmy had a game winning drive there at the end.

I didn't say they simplified the offense for him. I just don't think they used the entire playbook.

But they wouldn't have to simplify the playbook if Ryan Fitzpatrick was the Pats' QB studying under Brady for three seasons. He has a high football IQ. That doesn't make me want to turn over the offense to Fitzpatrick after Brady is gone.

There are literally dozens of QBs in the NFL that have the football IQ to handle the Patriots entire playbook if they were in the system for several years. That isn't exactly the measuring stick of what a franchise QB is. The Pats' playbook is complicated, but it isn't the football equivalent to the equation that Matt Damon solves in Good Will Hunting. Most NFL starting QBs can figure it out. And again, they pared back the playbook for Cassel because of his physical limitations, not his mental ones.

Again, Garoppolo came into the league with some glaring weaknesses. Some of them were not tested the first two weeks of the season.

I still wonder how he would do when a very good defense like Denver knocks the receivers off their routes and he has to hold onto the ball and wait for someone to get open. That has been a weakness for him in the past.

I would also want to see him when he gets hit a lot and how he responds to it.

There are so many questions and situations we haven't seen yet with him and whether he can overcome them. And we haven't seen him go against a defense go against him after they have developed a book against him and devised a game plan specific to his strengths and weaknesses.

Some comments on the comments

1. First of all the was a BSPN article, and far all we know the NFL 'execs' they talked were paring lot attendants and secretaries. I'm actually pleased that the conversation here didn't refer to them much, since the didn't have much to say. I've even more suspicious of the legitimacy of the sources since they conveniently hit all the possibilities, from trading him to keeping him.

2. I'd like Tom Brady to finish his career here, but I don't demand it. If I thought it was in the best interests of the team I'd take it. Lets not forget the the core of those good teams of the late 70's were gotten for the boat load of picks they got for trading Jim Plunkett from SF.

3. I can't believe how people want to evaluate JG as a 10 year good to elite starter after less than 6 quarters of play. There are dozens of QB's who have duplicated what Jimmy accomplished and were never heard from again. LONG TERM success for an NFL QB is NOT a given. Just look at these 3 recent examples. 1. RG3 had a HUGE rookie year and literally dragged his team to playoffs. He had 20 TD and only 5 picks AND rushed for over 800 yds. Who here is willing to give up even a 4th round pick for RG3 now. 2. Colin Kapernick - In his 2nd season he took over the starting QB job midway through the season and led his team to with 3 points of superbowl win, including scoring 31 points in the superbowl. He followed that up with a season that got his team to the NFCCG and losing by a TD to the eventual superbowl champs Seahawks. Who here is willing to give up a 4th rounder for him right now.....anyone?
3. Then finally how about Andrew Luck. This generation's golden boy QB. Probably a bad example because I believe this kid is the real deal, but after carrying the Dolts to 3 straight 11-5 seasons and one AFCCG, he has seemingly crashed and burned under the weight of the triumvirate of stupidity that is running his team, and right now even HIS career is in serious doubt.

The point is, long term "10 year" success is NOT a given, even after so called 'proven performances' over a LOT longer periods of success than JG has performed.

4. You don't have to demean Jimmy or build up Brady to make your point. I continue to believe the issue here is the timing of JG's contract plus the cap hits from Brady's contracts. If JG had another year on his contract then keeping him, under the same situation would make sense. But it IS what it is. JG's value as a trade asset will never be higher than it will after THIS season. It won't be half that in 2017 even if he gets another opportunity to play and plays well. No one is going to give us a first or high 2nd round pick, AND have to pay him big bucks in 20017. Remember part of his 2016 trade value is his new team would have a year on the cheap to evaluate him over 16 games before having to pay him big money.

5. People who want to keep him keep talking about Brady falling of some cliff after 2017. Who here can look at what he did Sunday and think that it will all go away in less than 3 years. Brett Farve had one of his best seasons ever at 40 playing on a new team and offense, and HE wasn't eating avocado ice cream and kale plus working out 4 hours a day at that age.

6. People also seem to dismiss the Jacoby Brissett factor. There is no question that the powers to be like this kid. While he no where near the kind of passer that JG is, BUT he has shown the focus and leadership qualities that are equal to him and who know what kind of passer he is in 3 more years in this system. So the cupboard isn't exactly empty if JG is traded

7. I dismiss the rumors that the Pats hate JG because he didn't 'man up' and play against Buffalo. These are ludicrous rumors that are right in keeping with a Fleger driven media who have a direct interest in creating the story and sell it until it become fact. It was in Jimmy's best interests to play IF HE COULD. He couldn't and that was that....until the mediots got their hands on it.

8. I agree with the poster who opined that the Pats need to get between 3000 and 4000 draft chart points to make this deal worth it. The REAL question in my mind is, what if they don't get that number?

To your point three. People forget that three years ago everyone was talking about the death of pocket passing QB and the future of QBs in the NFL was RG3 and Colin Kaepernick and most QBs going forward would be running QBs who were dual running and passing threats.

Although I don't know if Luck is a great example. Maybe by the overrated by the fans and media aspect, but he was good to great for a number of years before falling apart.

Jimmy Garoppolo Trade Talk: NFL Execs Examine If Patriots Will Deal QB

Interesting article...most of it reflects what we've long been saying

The minimum ask for Jimmy G. should be a 1st rounder and a 4th. The goal should be even higher (2 1st rounders if there's a team desperate enough to make that deal). But of course, as one exec asks is it even worth trading someone who could potentially carry your franchise for another decade?

For me, the smartest thing would be to retain Jimmy through the end of his contract in 2017 and keep him as insurance in case Brady either goes down or starts to fall apart. At the very least, you can franchise tag him in 2018 and sell him off then.
But ... But didn't you know? It's "IMPOSSIBLE" to keep Garoppolo and Brady or even THINK of Garoppolo sticking around after this season. All the "experts" here have said so!

I think Garoppolo right now is at an all time high trade value. I am not sure he will be even a good full time starter when teams develop a book on him (an added advantage of his injury is that we never had to see what he did when they did if the Pats are looking to trade him).

Belichick and his staff know far better than what we know about his capabilities. I don't think any of us can determine what kind of starter he will be based on the very limited sample size we have seen. Unless the coaching thinks this guy is going to be a top 10 QB, he is replaceable for the right trade.

hey look...rational thought on this forum. this isnt allowed. us forum posters know best

And when people get a handle on his capabilities, he could be awful.

People keep drooling over his performance during the Miami game, but ignore the fact that Miami played off the receivers and let them run their timing routes allowing Garoppolo to hit his first read most of the time in stride. They also forget that Miami was starting to figure him out a bit and his last few drives were not nearly as impressive.

There are still a lot of questions about Garoppolo that are huge question marks. What can he do when teams figure him out and start knocking his receivers off their timing routes and making him hold onto the ball more (that has been an issue for him where when he does hold onto the ball, he holds on way too long)? Is he durable enough to withstand the beating he is going to get? What will he do if the team is down and he has to carry the offense and the team?

We have no idea what this guy is. We have seen a lot of QBs who look great right off the bat and turn into scrubs (Matt Schaub, Josh Freeman, Colin Kaepernick, etc.). And we are going to judge Garoppolo after less than six quarters?

Couldn't have said it better myself!

That being said, outside of Patsfans, all talk my talk will be about how Garoppolo is worth two 1st rounders and two 4th rounders minimum ;)-

The Patriots QBs all run the same offense.

The Patriots QBs, however, do not run all the same plays, and they do not all have the same 'rights' and 'privileges' at the line.

People seem to be confusing those things.

**** the NFL executives...and **** Gaspar Gomez! And **** the ****in' Diaz brothers! **** 'em all! I bury those cokkroaches!............

Can't trade Jimmy. Bradys 's got two years of high level play left, then Jimmy takes over. QBs are the hardest position to fill and happens to be the most critical for a football teams success, we've already have seen Jimmy play at a high level in this system, why would we give him up?

But that was the drive after the three I mentioned. He only played about four plays before the play he got injured and three of them were incomplete passes.
Incorrect. The third drive you mentioned is the one he got hurt.
