Malcolm Butler

Butler held his own against Antonio Brown which was impressive, but his game today was elite. It was clear that Beckham respected the hell out of his coverage skills. OBJ made his plays, but that was an intense battle only a number 1 corner is capable of taking on.

I love me some Malcolm Butler......this kid has got it. Even OBJ was giving him some props. He has really developed his man to man skills and will only get better as he picks up those subtle nuances that Vets know.

I'm so annoyed at these injuries taking away our players.....especially would've loved to see Darryl Roberts out starting opposite him. Imagine having a Top-10 Pass Defense made up of Undrafted Stars as your No.1 and No.2 corners :D
Roberts was 7th round

We'll disagree on who is the best. Julio is also outstanding.

I'll take OBJ.

For the record, my opinion is that Antonio Brown is the best WR in the NFL, Julio is also amazing and Hopkins having an incredible season with uh ...not so great QB's.

OBJ is amazing, love the kid, just don't think he's #1, but it's hard for any second year guy to be #1 at anything, he can probably be the best in a year or two and stay the best for a decade, but right now it's Brown, hands down, IMO.

He is pretty damn good. He has almost 2200 yards and 20 touchdowns in 21 games since he entered the NFL.

Like I just said, love him, he's in the conversation of best 4 or 5, but I'll take Antonio Brown. I think being such a late round pick helps Brown as much as its helped Brady, that motivation means everything when the going gets tough.

Any idea what happened on that long td by beckham? Where they playing zone?

@strngplyr: In retrospect, this thread started when Bulter played Brown, mostly man, in the first game of the season. Looking at what Brown did that week, compared to what he's done in other games to date, I'd say Butler played Brown about even. Given what he did then, how he's grown and improved with experience, and how he played OBJ today, I think a case could be made that Malcolm is among the league's best corners. Basically, when we replace Revis with Butler we did not downgrade. I think that's pretty friggen amazing.

Man to man, at least for Butler, Butler was beat, but barely, OBJ makes a fingertip catch, Devin McCourty takes probably the worst angle of his entire career at safety and misses the tackle, OBJ outruns Butler after a slight stumble from tripping over DMC.

Play should have been maybe a 30 yard completion, yes Butler gave up the catch, but DMC gave up the TD, and if DMC makes the tackle, OBJ is probably hurting, DMC was FLYING to the ball, just a rare miss.

Really uncharacteristic play by McCourty. The TD is 100% on him, not Butler.

After the TD, Butler was lights out on OBJ.

Roberts was 7th round

My bad, I forgot he was in the 7th. Usually I'm a Rolodex for that sort of thing, lol

Still an undrafted and a 7th rounder starting, and not only starting doing a damn good job at it would definitely go to furthering this teams capacity to find talent were others fail to and are too lazy to do their homework on.

At any rate on I'm damned proud of that kid and this teams ability to overcome the loss of Edelman, Lewis, Collins and our decimated O-Line and Secondary and pull out a tough win over the Gnats today

The truly scary thing about Beckham is that he and Cruz haven't been on the field together much. If Cruz comes back healthy, and the Giants make the playoffs, teams are going to be facing a WR trio of:

Beckham
Cruz
Randle

with Vereen coming out of the backfield and Donnell as the receiving TE.

I think Donnell is overrated and turnover prone, and Randle can't run the proper routes to save his life, but Beckham and Cruz w/Vereen scare me if Cruz has anything close to his former form to show this season.

What do Cruz and Beckham have together, maybe 2 games? I think OBJ missed 4 and Cruz was hurt on week 6, agreeing with you entirely that it can be a scary combination who have honestly never played together.

There's no doubt that after yesterday, I am much more impressed and comfortable with Butler as our CB1 than ever before. He played tough and competed on every single snap. Definitely quality CB play.

If what Butler showed yesterday is not enough to prove he belongs and to prove he is a legit corner in this league, then I don't know what will. I'm sure some haters will point to the fact that he had help over the top the whole game, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he was competitive on every play (save the TD where he was just beat off the line) and ODB was really flustered. His tackling was also very good the whole game. He's legit. I needed to see a performance like this and we got it yesterday.

With all that said, we really need to figure out CB3. All the talk has been about CB2, but I feel Ryan has settled in and settled down. He still is not perfect, but he has been extremely solid and competitive in recent weeks especially. CB3 is going to put us in jeopardy later in the season if it does not improve. Coleman has promise but has not shown consistency. Melvin, who I really still hope will be good, was no better than Coleman yesterday (probably even a bit worse if I recall correctly). The Giants went to that well many many times with success. Terell Brown going down for the season looms a bit, IMO.

Yea...can't go wrong with any of 'em.

Butler was "balling" yesterday and anyone who disagrees needs to pull their head out their ***. He has shown me that he is legit and the more confidence he gets the better he gets. He took a huge step IMO yesterday.

Well Cruz is done for the season, so that won't be happening.

Too bad it looks like Sanders will have a second string QB throwing to him. Or a badly wounded noodle armed starting QB. Either way will detract from the matchup, but I don't care.
