Contracts to deal with

Agree but it was a nice bonus. If DA is gone perhaps Boyce could contribute there and in games. IsAD ready to contribute? Is there a FA out there who can be plugged in? Plus even if we move on from DA we still eat some cap money which cuts into the value of his replacement.

Or maybe Larry Fitz gets cut and decides he wants to come on a team friendly deal after making $120m in Arizona.

So, we have finally have 3 productive wide receivers and are set at TE. Now, we have to cut Amendola, and create a need, go back to having 2 receivers and hope that we can SOMEONE to be productive as the #3 receiver and as a starter if Edelman or LeFell is injured.

Losing Amendola probably has to happen, but the void is a serious one. We had a solid #3 WR who Brady could count on, who could start as needed, and who could return kicks.

Obviously the "answer" is to get Danny to take a pay cut and a contract with lots of incentives.

I agree! I hope they restructure him. Guy was super clutch in several games we almost lost and in all of the playoffs.

Hopefully he tells his agent that. Which is David Dunn who is also Welker's agent, so who knows if there is still any bad blood on their part.

I think the difference is that Welker posted HOF caliber numbers whereas Vereen's are modest. I don't expect his agents to be looking for the kind of money, they were for Welker. They will look for good money for a 3rd down back, which should be in the 3-4 million a year range imo and given how little the Patriots are spending on the unit they can get it done.

I believe Amendola will agree to an incentive laden restructure that will reduce his cap hit.

I loved the way DA played in the playoffs and the last couple of regular season games, but it should be pretty easy to replace. Here are his last 7 games, since his 0 for catches against GB and Det.

@ SD - 3/7 yards
Mia - 1/11 yards
@NYJ - 8/63
Buf - 4/24

Bal - 5/81
Indy - 1/8 yards
Sea - 5/48

Great job against the Ravens. But the others are pedestrian numbers and with Edelman/Vereen, I would like to see us get a physical WR or a better route runner. We can save salary by cutting him and possible replace him with a player on our roster or a draft pick

There is no way he will agree to an incentive laden contract.

Which is exactly what people said about Wilfork, and then he did just that.

Simply using catch numbers in no way reflects how important hits contributions were. One 7 yd catch against the Ravens saved their season.

Players like fitz and johnson have made a ton of money in their careers. They are missing that championship. I wouldnt mind one of them.

Speaking of ST contributions, Arrington scored two ST TDs this season. As a rookie, he played 8 games with the Pats and had 15 ST tackles.

In other stats, he had 11-15 passes defensed in 2011-13, but only 4 last season. And other than the year he led the league with 7, he's only had 2 INTs.

I know CB is a streaky position in terms of stats, due in part to offensive and defensive play-calling choices. But that sure can make it hard to evaluate a guy on the numbers.

So who do you guys think we're going to get for $2.1M, because that's all we're going to save in 2015 cap space if we cut him. DA is worth $2.1M in 2015.

The Jets game was all his. He made 4 game saving plays including recovering the on side kick.

The Patriots may be one of the few teams in football history where the slot receiver can be a decoy. The book on the Pats is to flood the middle of the field, where the TEs and slot guys roam.

Agree. even if we get someone with a 1 million cap hit (which wouldn't be much of a player) is saving a million in cap money worth potentially spoiling our current chemistry, not to mention said player would have to learn our play book.

DA already has 2 years in the system..

Bad arithmetic, or more precisely bad reasoning. What matters is new money. Acceleration of the hit from his signing bonus can be offset in the structure of other guys' contracts.

I think they, now have enough good young defensive backs that they can release Arrington to save some money against the cap. If he wasn't good enough to keep on the field during the SB then he really doesn't deserve his deal.

some people here have short memories....yes, against the seahawks Arrington had a bad game...coverage was actually pretty good on those two deep throws but the WR had size on him.

lets not forget though that arrington Shut down TY Hilton TWICE this year and was a large reason why we own the colts.

he is a solid slot cornerback...horrible outside Cornerback

If we cut Amendola before June 2, we only save $2.1M against the 2015 cap. If we cut him after June 1, then we save a little more cap space in 2015 but the difference simply transfers to 2016 where I have demonstrated in another thread that we are in deep already. Below, is Miguel's explanation:

You perhaps could upgrade Amendola, but at what cost.

Hey, I'll take another LaFell, cheaper and better than Amendola, however, Amendola averaging 7 catches per game over the last 5 and some of the most critical scores and 3rd down conversions in the entire playoffs has added a bit of a sentimental spot for him.

He really emerged late as a reliable guy, is that a sign of things to come or did he just rise to the occasion?

If it's what he'd provide moving forward I want him around at LaFell type money, if it was a once in a lifetime thing he's not worth $5m to hold a roster spot until he feels like contributing again.

I like him but he's such a confusing player.
