The salary cap savings by cutting Kyle Arrington are miniscule ($865,000). Kyle Arrington remains on the New England Patriots roster for the 2015-16 NFL Season.

The New England Patriots need to restructure the Darrelle Revis contract. Extend 3 years, $42 million for a salary cap hit of $14 million per season. Salary cap savings for the 2015-16 NFL Season equates to $6 million (takes into account the $5 million prorated signing bonus amortization).

Are you presuming a contract of $14M a year with no bonus? In that case the 2015 savings would indeed be $6M. If there is a bonus, say $21M with a $1M 2015 salary, then the 2015 savings would be $12M.

No way. We finally win the SB with a great secondary. They need to keep this D intact as much as they can and try to improve it, not break it down. They really need to start thinking short term in the form of the next 2-3 years in regards to the salary cap and do whatever they can to keep Revis, Browner, and McCourty.

You want to bring back the defense.

This is doable if Revis is willing. The savings from a Revis extension is $12M for 2015. IMHO, there is enough to deal with McCourty. Browner is staying and may or may not restructure. I don't see any particular reason for it.

With regard to the rest of the defensive free agents, it seems likely that Casillas will stay on as a base LB and Ster. He won't cost much. Ayers is likely to be worth lost more elsewhere. Branch may or may not be back. My guess is that he will be.

MORE TOUGH QUESTIONS
Wilfork is due a large bonus. I suspect that it will be paid. Others think not. Mayo has a huge cap hit, but has all the cards until he can pass a physical at which point the team can ask for a restructure. My guess is that Mayo will sign a similar deal to the one Wilfork did last year.

In any case, if Wilfork and Mayo return, they will have very high cap hits.

Before reading the rest of the thread, I'd say:

Revis has now been on a championship winning team. Perhaps he has a greater understanding than he did before of the importance of the best players not taking top dollar.

Amendola is likely worth a lot more money to some other teams than to the Pats.

Belichick may be willing to keep his WR's and TE's (and Vereen). Some are overpaid. Some are underpaid. However, as a whole, they work very well together and it is worth something to keep them all for another year or two. The only receiver who is a free agent is Vereen.

I agree that Amendola and Vereen might be expensive, but they be worth keeping. If Vereen goes, I think it even more important to keep Amendola.

MY BOTTOM LINE
Our passing game was a thing of beauty, now that we have healthy receivers who know the system. It seems a shame to break it up now.

No doubt in my mind Revis wants to come back. I mean Jet and Bills? Really? He's settled here, he wants to win out with Bill and Brady. It's just whether we stay true on our end and cough up

Amendola is a fighter and a football player who could easily have been Julian Edelman for us without that torn groin.
Which means he will likely be some other team's Edelman next year, for more catches and more money, then what he is likely to see here. Unless he just loves it here and doesn't want to leave.

I also think that the Pats on the whole would be better off with another LaFell WR than with Amendola coming back.

If the OL-rebuild continues next year, and the Pats ever get to the point where Brady doesn't have to get the ball out in two seconds or die in Super Bowls, a second WR that can threaten the intermediate sideline would really open up the field.

With the Pats i truly believe that Revis has a chance to surpass primetime as the best at his position.

It feels weird to even be thinking of trades and releasing guys from a group that obviously has such incredible chemistry.

That being said, Vereen, Ridley, and probably wilfork are gone. Might be wise to lock up Collins and Hightower now - especially Collins before his salary expectations become in line with his All Pro superstar potential

Mayo, Wilfork, Revis, Vereen, and McCourty are all definitely coming back next year imo.

Your offer is insulting to a player of Revis's intelligence.

A 30 year old football player of Revis's stature is not going to take a back loaded deal especially when Patrick Peterson's contract and Richard Sherman's contract are not back loaded.

A 3 year, $42 million deal would entail salary cap hits of $14 million per season. The New England Patriots can hammer out the details of the signing bonus, roster bonus, and guarantees as part of the $42 million package.

The $5 million prorated signing bonus amortization associated with Revis's original contract remains on the New England Patriots salary cap for the 2015-16 NFL Season whether Revis is on the roster this season or not.

Revis will be back...no doubt imo. And the pats will pay him what he is worth bill pays for elite talent

Bill isnt going to break up this secondary which is a large reason we won the superbowl this year and revis genuinely seems to like it here

Amendola was very good during the postseason, I am not sure he will be back, he might want to be a featured WR and with Edelman here that is not going to happen, so why would he take less money to play here in a role that he likely feels he is too good of a player for?

How do you know it is "likely" he feels too good of a player for what BB has in mind for him ? It was reported that he fully embraced the kick returner role and was happy to contribute in any way possible.

I am not saying we need to keep him but if anything he was the epitome of a team player since he arrived in Foxboro. I doubt that he feels "too good to play a certain role" about anything (except maybe playing for the Jets).

That all being said, with his postseason performance he might played himself into a situation where another team might be willing to trade for him.

I want Danny A on the team him and Julian two quick twitch guys on the field cause defensive backs fits as we saw on the games biggest stage.
Those high percentage short pass then watch them make extra yards plays are so valuable.
Brady really is in sync with Lafell, Danny A, Julian Edelman, you may add a tall game breaker but don't take away Bradys comfort levels every year.
That's why Danny A and Vareen need to stay.
Wilfork, Ninkovich,Mayo is where you save cap.

Revis has to come back along with McCourty.

I am not bringing amendola at his number unless he takes a paycut.

Any idea how much vince and mayo are making next year? I like vince but its obvious he is passed his prime.

If you don't have this page bookmarked, you should. @Miguel is THE MAN when it comes to the salary cap.

who are our FA this year?

The Pats free agents are as follows:

Revis - though the Pats hold an option year
McCourty - the Pats and he have supposedly been close to an extension
Akeem Ayers -
Alan Branch -
Sealver Siliga -
Dan Connolly -
Steven Gostkowski - A must re-sign IMHO
Shane Vereen - A must resign IMHO
Steven Ridley
Danny Aiken
Chris White
Jonathan Casillas -
James Develin - Exclusive Restricted Free Agent (ERFA)
Josh Boyce -
Joe Vellano -
Greg Orton - ERFA
James Morris - ERFA
Brian Tyms - ERFA

Below are the 9 players who were on the practice squad at the end of the season. Their contracts are expiring and it remains to be seen which ones will get a contract from the Pats
Jake Bequette -
Chris Barker - Probably will be back
Garrett Gilbert -
Justin Green - Probably will be back
Caylin Hauptmann - Probably will be back
Eric Martin - Probably will be back
Deonte Skinner - Probably will be back
Daxton Swanson - Probably will be back
Jonathan Krause - Probably will be back

I digress, but wasn't Mayo leading the pre-game speech/cheer with the defense at the superbowl?

What happened with Dennard? He just disappeared. Did not see too much negative on him from this site.

It never seemed that Dennard was 100% this year.. Not participating in OTAs due to serving his jail time seemed to hurt him. Couldn't beat out Ryan or Butler.

Couple of quibbles...well, one: they won't franchise Revis if they keep him for $20 million this year. His cap hit the following year would be $24 million (120% of this year's salary, I believe) in new money.
The Pats CAN'T franchise him. It was a stipulation of the current contract..
