Greg Bedard dealing with Playoff Level Stupidity Listening Thread

Feels there is mutual interest in a Revis return. But he isn't going to take a discount.

He thinks Revis likes the winning atmosphere and likes he can do his thing without the circus.

Thinks it will get done, but will get $13-14 million a year.

Felger said he heard through sources he will stay with the Pats and take less than he can get on the open market as long as he is the highest paid CB. It may not have to be real money, but the average will have to be highest. Might be willing to take backloaded deal. (the last two sentences are more speculation than his source)

His numbers were better vs JAX, HOU in 2013 Div and DEN in 2012 Div but because of what Andy said earlier- down 14 twice and 35 points on legit drives was nothing short of legendary.
Exactly the point. We played a really legitimate opponent. Houston and Denver were cake walks.

Elway fed up with the conservative nature of John Fox. Did like Jack Del Rio. Elway is all about aggressiveness.

Not sure what direction the Broncos go and whether they keep Gase.

Doesn't think Manning should retire. Feels his problems had to do with injuries. Still felt he was good up to the Chargers game.

Feels the Broncos have no choice to bring Manning back. No other options out there at QB. Get more aggressive coaches on both side of the ball. Still thinks it is going to end badly for Denver, but no other options. Osweiller is not the answer.

This was one of Brady's BEST EVER performances.

Not his best ever, but one of the best.

Here is why.

If you watch that game, they were collapsing the pocket in his face.

He got driven into the ground.

He got his eye poked to the point you could see the broken bloodvesels in his eye during the game.

He got crushed multiple times.

Brady took a freaking beating and made some of his best throws knowing he was going to get smeared. And he still made them.

The INT was bad, especially with a wide open amandola in the middle of the field, but given all the hits he was taking and the great passes he was throwing, I can't see how this does not rank up there with some of his best all time.

Felt Josh Kline overall played well at RG.

Feels Vollmer was a Pro Bowl caliber tackle this year.

Felt Solder did well, but got help.

Not worried about the o-line vs. the Colts.

Bedard - pats have to execute better at the end of the half

Some comments on the comments:

1. One of my pet peeves is the criticism of Brady in the playoffs, especially in the 2 losing superbowls. I don't know why people forget that DESPITE the problems he was having with the rush, Brady DID lead the Pats on TWO late 4th quarter drives that brought the Pats from behind to a position where they needed just one stop to win those games. THAT my friends would have been legend had those stops been made,. 2 4th quarter come from behind drives.

2, I agree with Bedard that people tend to ignore that in game like these the competition is better and moving the ball is harder. Just think about the 2011 D made up of misfits, throw aways. and people playing out of position. THAT defense, which was HISTORICALLY bad during the season played pretty well in the playoffs. IIRC their points allowed/game was less than 20.

3. Agree with Bedard that Brady was good not great. Not that there is anything bad with a QB "merely" being good. He well in the 2nd half making a lot of easy throws against a soft D. The Colts might not be a great D, but they aren't going give Brady soft coverage very often. He's going to have to make more difficult throws

4, Happy to hear him have good things to say about Jones and Ninko.. I didn't see it, but he does it for a living., Its also a good lesson in seeing how subjective these rating services are. Not to say he's wrong, but it is HIS rating/opinion.

5. Mazz continues to be the biggest ass on radio. He makes Felger look positively benign. He know noting about the game and MAYBE gives what he says 20 seconds of thought before he says them...,.,,if that.

6. The most important thing Bedard had to offer in the hour I was able to listen to was this,. Sometimes you have to understand that the OTHER team's guys get paid too, The poor showing of the defense, both vs the pass and run, was due to the great scheming and execution of the Ravens. Its not anything to get excited about and certainly can be remedied.

We shredded the Ravens 2ndary and stiffed their pass rush in the 2nd half. The Ravens had top 5 defense this season (2nd in red zone D) and the Pats were 3 for 3 in the redzone and didn't even attempt a FG. Doesn't mean the Ravens suck at what they did best, but more that the Pats got paid too.

7. He reluctantly put down Wendell as one of is duds because he had 5 disruptions and a sack, Well if anyone who had to play 2 positions and do it against Nagata, Williams, and Jernigan, and only gave up 5 disruptions in over 60 snaps, I'd think you did a help of a job, especially when you consider the guys you were playing against are bigger stronger and more athletic,

8. I liked what I saw from Tim Jernigan. He flashed on occasion. If we get that kind of play from Easley next year (and I expect we will), he will make a big difference in that defense,. BTW- I think Easley has the bigger upside, but lets see how develops this off season. I will be really happy if he stays up here this spring

9. Almost forgot this one. While I agree with Bedard on Brady's grade, one thing Gred didn't give Brady enough credit for was moving the offense under the pressure of not having even a hint of a run game.

Talked to some people about Amendola. Said he did not get fully healthy from his offseason surgery until mid season. He got returning duties because Belichick wanted to reward him for working his tail off trying to get back to healthy.

Mazz - Amendola not a cog in Pats offense
Bedard - Amendola was hurt last year. Did not get healthy until the middle of the season this year. BB wanted to reward DA for his hard work so he put DA on returns

Bedard - pats have to execute better at the end of the half

That's been a consistent thorn in the side:

- Interception against Detroit takes points off the board
- Interception against Miami takes points off the board and leads to a Miami score before the half
- Interception against Baltimore leads to a score before the half

That and the slow start on defense at the beginning of halves against scripted plays are the two biggest issues I'd like to see tightened up.

Mazz - Amendola was wide open on Gronk's interception.
Bedard - Gronk's interception result from a bad throw and not a bad decision.

Bedard - Amendola will be key against the Seahawks in a Super Bowl matchup

Brady - helped the pats get into the 28-14 hole. Everyone was responsible for the slow start. Brady should have led Lafell one instead of a back shoulder

Can't stop myself from repeating this but those 3 examples are why I'm critical of TFB this season. We went from a team that won by consistently SCORING as time ran out on the half to an offense that in several instances failed to score given an opportunity (Gronk open deep twice!) and instead had the opposition score. A HUGE point swing!

Worse yet the D has let down in the final minutes of the half (see GB game).

PS: TFB was OUTSTANDING in the 2nd half of the Ravens game. A lesser performance under intense pressure and we'd be joining Broncs fans.

And the Pats wouldn't have returned from a two TD deficit to 14-14 w/o Tom kicking ass. Our chances might've tanked had Tom not led us down to that first TD. Everyone mentions the second half but I thought the first half comeback might've been even more critical and impressive.

Brady was fricking awesome. Not a snow balls chance in hell we mount any sort of comeback w/o Tom. Good, not great my ass.

I agree with him that the INT does knock down his overall grade. It was a horrible and costly pass. If the Pats lost this game, he would have been a significant reason. Of course because they won, he was even more of a significant reason.

And people keep talking about the 35 points scored and don't mention that 7 came from a 50 yard pass from Edelman.

Not discounting his performance, but can see Bedard's point. He still had Brady at #2 in his three ups.
That pick was easily a 7-10 point swing in the game. And if that had been the case and everything else would have been the same, its a 38-24 game which is right about what most people thought it was going to be. (I had 35-16, but I underestimate Gary Kubiak) ;')

It was a very bad and costly pick. Brady knew it too. The good thing was that it wasn't something they couldn't recover from. (or worse as it turned out). Once again, Brady showed why he's STILL one of the top QB's in the league. We just have to come to the reality that he's NOT going to make the number of "I can't believe he fit that in" throws that Rodgers, Luck, and Flacco are. (though he will make a few ie TD to LaFell). We have to be satisfied he will make up the difference by NOT turning the ball over like Falcco and Luck do.
