OK - 4 down and 2 to go vs dung this 6 game run against the top QB's and WR's and some of the best Defenses front in the league. And while this was still wasn't perfect, it was the the most complete overall game the Pats have completed in this 7 game run. IIRC is a run against 4 games against division leaders that were essentially blow outs. This has been a run of almost scary impressiveness, .

1. t Very scary that for the rest of the league that the Pats can run over 40 rushes one week and the next week throw the ball over 50 times and still be effective.

2. While the Lions were very effective against the Pats run when they were in 3-4 receiver sets, when the Pats finally came out with 2 TE's and 2 RB's they ran the ball very well despite the fact the Lions stacked the box. in fact I bet when the stats finally come out, we will find that they ran most of their 90 odd rushing yds with 2 RB formations.

3. That's was also impressive, especially after a very bad first half rushing the ball. It shows us that even against good rushing D's, when the Pats put their mind to rushing the ball against stacked defenses they can still move the ball. that will be important come the playoffs.

4. I'm not one who likes to talk about the refs, but for 3 quarters, these guys were the main reason the Lions scored any points and why the Pats were stopped on offense, especially in the first half. Too many of the Pats 9 accepted penalties were marginal at best, the Lions seemed to be given free reign to tackle and hold Pats receivers down field.

5. That being said, Edelman's TD run back WAS the result of a penalty, Too bad, it was another great run by Edelman. Also, though Gronk was clearly held(tackled) on Brady's pick, that was still a nice pick by Ihedibu (from UMASS)....and a Brady will probably look at it as a bad decision on his part. In the fourth it looked like the refs finally started to call a few against the Lions just so they might look respectable. As it was both the yard and penalties were still lopsided even in the end (9/59 vs 11 for 94)

6. I'm am very confident that Jonas Gray is never going to be late for practice again. ;)

7. Blount was both effective and efficient. Clearly he is going to be an asset for this teams

8. Hard to believe that the Pats have added Branch, Casillas, Ayers and Wright AFTER TC None of them are all stars, but been effective contributors as back ups. Cassillas had one key tackle in coverage today. Its a good job when you can pick up one guy that late, let one 4.

9. Tom Brady dropped back 53 times and against what is arguably the best DL in the league, there were ZERO sacks, I'm guessing about 5 hits and about 5 hurries. Brady was completing 72 % of his passes for over 350 yds. This was and OUTSTANDING job by the OL gain in pass protection.

Think about it. IIRC, the Pats had 10 sacks in the first 4 game, and have allowed just 4 in the last 7, despite going against some of the best pass rushing D's in the league.

10. I thought Brady was good today, but not was at his most accurate. Even some of his catches were not "in stride" so the Pats lost some YAC. He also missed a few guys who were open, IIRC Vareen, Edelman, and Lafell, plus had a bad drop by Gronk. Again this means to be that the Pats can still be a dominant offense when Brady is playing "merely" good (though its hard to wrap your head around a 70% completion rate as being "merely good". ;) ). It must be horrifying for opponents' DC's to think about what it might be like trying to stop Brady on a night were he's hot. :D

11. Think about this for a second. Right now the Pats have 15 TD's scored by their TE's. It is probably very likely that the Pats will wind up with over 20 for this position. So far Tim Wright does nothing more than catch just about EVERYTHING that's thrown to him. There is no question in my mind that over the next few years Wright will become an important member of the Pats receiving corps. For now, I'm satisfied that he's proving to be a red zone offense pass specialists.

12. If you happened to watch the Denver Miami game, I can over simplify it by saying the key 1difference between the Dolphins and Pats was their tackling on the short passing game. I'll be interested to compare the YAC vs those 2 teams for this game. I'd bet there was a HUGE dumber difference

BTW - Bronco's invested a hugh chunk of money in their defense this year, and the results seem like its getting worse, while on the other side, the Pats D, seems to be getting better

13. It can be argued the the 2 key plays in the game came from special teams. Not only did Allen handle a bad snap, he completely turned around the field position with a 63 yd punt....that had a minimal return. Spectacular coverage, btw especially given how long that punt was. Equally important was Amendola's 80 retun that set up a big score.

14. As I expected the Pats put Revis on Tate and had Browner, bracketing Megatron. Though I it should be noted that the Pats switched the 2 from time to time as well as playing both zone and press man. IMHO, this was was Browner]s best game. Even his penalties were better.

15 Pretty scary that we can honestly say that Pat Chunk was excellent in coverage as well as being a key run stopper. THISen is the consistent all round kind of performance I expeced to see form Chung after the 2011 season from. Patrick Chung. We forget just how good he was at the end of the 2011 season

Clearly he regressed in 2012 and was allowed to to to Philly in 2013, and since that time, he's been a major whipping boy over those 2 years. Now I don't know what caused the change in his play (coaching and maturity I guess), but he's been more than what we could have hoped to get ge was signed as what most thought was an after thought in the off season.

16. Good that Dennard was active. I'm not sure how much he played, but its a start. He can be important depth if anything happens to Arrington.....who also has another notable game.

17. Right now there is no team playing better football against better opponents in this league. Looks like the Packers will be the best game of the six. I know when this 6 game started I would have been thrilled with 4 -2 for this difficult stretch, even 3-3 would have been acceptable. Now 4 games , and the media is ready to anoint them as sure fire 6-0.. This is going to be a great. I'm looking toward it

sorry...but some guy calling himself "belichick 87654%#$53^29&8" or something admonished the entire board and fanbase for thinking the reffing in this game was atrocious. Guess you can't think that or anything else that raises questions because that means you're just a conspiracy nut and not a "true Pats fan" that lets everything and anything pass because, well THAT is rationality supreme...our combined 80 years of fanship are worthless.

Even more hard to believe - they cost almost nothing. Other than Wright, the lot of them cost nothing higher than flipping 6ths and 7ths. And you forgot Blount too ;)

Saw a tweet that said if Gronk gets 1 more TD and Wright gets 4 more we'll be the first team ever to have two TE each catch at least 10 TD in a season.

You forgot Blount. Two TDs after joining the team just a few days ago.

Ok, I have to know...what is this? For that matter, who is the avatar and what IN THE HELL IS THAT INCREDIBLY DISTURBING SIGNATURE?

I can answer the last question, though I risk drawing you into the same trap of madness into which I foolishly stumbled. Forgive me...

The avatar is a dude with a patriots helmet tattoo. The wat lady is uh, the wat lady. A billion year old memememe.

The sig is well, Waxy already got dat covered.

What I found most crazy about this game, or at least most underreported in its craziness, is basically Gronk. Here's what he was up against:
  • Deandre Levy, one of maybe 2 or 3 LBs in the NFL with the size, quickness and speed to present a pretty good matchup on him.
  • A defense--the #1 D in the NFL, no less--ranked 9th overall against TEs by DVOA, that was *still* throwing multiple defenders at him on most plays and double/tripling him in the red zone, to the point that Wright was wide open in the end zone because the Lions forgot to cover him since all of their guys were on Gronk.
And in spite of that he still had 78 yards, and would've added a touchdown if he hadn't been straight-up tackled on the goal line. So we now know that an 80 yard day is the closest that anyone can reasonably even hope to come to "stopping" him, and even that is only possible if you have the ideal personnel to defend him and still make it agenda item #1 in your defensive gameplan.

And there is quite literally nobody else in the league that has the personnel to execute that gameplan to the level that the Lions did. The few teams that defend TEs better than them defend WRs and running games much worse, so the Pats can just shift their emphasis elsewhere to exploit those weaknesses like they did last week.

It's just hard to see the Patriots going worse than 13-3 if Gronk stays healthy. The Pats are too good when he's at full strength. Full disclosure: I think we lose next week. It's pretty much a coin flip, but the Packers are just too good at home and their crowd is going to be rabid. And even if we do lose, I won't be too bothered by it, because I think there's a >50% shot that we run the table from there.

Detroit plays dirty, they try and intimidate the other team and are not above using cheap shots to do it. I think Blount started at RB because he plays with a bit of an edge and does his fair share of intimidation and is not afraid to mix it up. It ended up the Patriots did the intimidating. Stafford was so afraid of being hit he gave himself up early going for 4th down and turned the ball over.

Nice summary Ken.

Just thinking of the possibility of HFA for the post-season.

Blount & Gray in bad/cold weather. Imagine having those 2 guys with fresh legs pounding the defense all game long. Defenders might come out of that game with a need for some psychological counseling. Or worse case, you have the best (certainly in AFC) outdoor weather QB so pick your poison (WR/TE/RBs -- LaFell really does help take the top off of defenses and he and Brady will hve a connection or several before all is said and done).

Imagine what a statement it could be if we go into GB and pull off an impressive win. Will there be any team in the NFL that would be more battle tested than the Pats and then with a winning record. For the record, I expect the Patriots to play a highly competitive game, but I'm not counting on a victory against GB (but I wouldn't vote against the Pats either). This is the most complete and deep team we have seen the Patriots have in quite some time.

Well written post.. as usual.

The additions that this team has made in the middle of this season are significant.. unfortunately 31 other teams could have done something similar, but passed..

A lot of this is due to superior coaching, week after week I watch really crappy decisions by other coaches and shytty clock management...

That series of downs that the Lions had at commencing at the 2:20 mark of the second quarter, to let the clock run down to the two minute warning is really crappy decision making. Is it lack of confidence in Stafford?? Fear of our Defense?? Or were they "playing keep away" from Brady??

What is up with the side arm delivery of Stafford?? That seemed quite ineffective.

I enjoy watching this team, particularly in relation to how everything is managed.. how we mix and match players to keep the fresh and our game plans recently have been over the top...

That and no sacks, again.. very impressive O line play.

Enjoy the ride folks, short of winning another Super Bowl, it does not get much better than this..

Harkens back to the old Bum Phillips quote about Don Shula, "He can take his'n and beat your'n, or he can take your'n and beat his'n". BB could do the same.

I hope the OP is right about Jonas Gray. He's got a big week ahead personally and professionally. The fans are with him as he learns and adjusts to the most up and down week of his life.

As crazy as it may sound, I don't think this was the Patriots "A game". I think they have a legitimate shot to win with the "B game" in Green Bay. If they bring their "A game" at Lambeau, it will be a rout. It is scary to think that this team is still improving and will likely have some fresh, talented legs rejoining the DL for the stretch. If the Pats remain relatively healthy, they should go all the way.

Although they played well, I don't think the OL played as well as you all seem to think. Even though Brady was getting rid of the ball very quickly, and his pocket poise was excellent, he took several big hits. Sure the Lion's DL is great, but Brady saw a lot of pressure.

Although not a perfect game, Brady wasn't as "off" as people think. He faced a lot of pressure, and the refs gave the Lions a free pass to mug the Pats receivers.

The Pats receivers and TEs are playing well and Brady is spreading the ball. I would love to see Dobson make the leap. It would be awesome to see a speedy, tall deep threat emerge this season.

The secondary has been exceptional, even on plays where Stafford had a ton of time or extended the play. They had a little trouble with the bunch formation early, but they sorted it out. This game may* have had the best safety play I've ever seen from the Pats. Revis is a beast and is so much fun to watch when he's on your team.

The DL looks good and will be great once Jones and Siliga come back. Wilfork might* not be as good as he used to, but he still draws a lot of double teams and doesn't give up ground. Branch and Jones are playing well enough that Big Vince doesn't have to take the majority of the snaps.

It is amazing how well the LBs are playing when you consider how thin they were when they lost Mayo. Ayers and Casillas were great mid-season pickups and are playing surprisingly well. This group is young, athletic and versatile. If Mayo comes back 100% next year, it will be hands down the best LB group in the league. Although I think Hightower is playing great he sometimes gives up too early on plays. It may simply be a result of playing too many snaps, but it could come back to bite them.

Overall, the Pats have the best special teams in the league. I've never seen so many excellent ST players that are such good positional players as well. That said, Danny Aiken needs to be replaced. I hope his bad snapping doesn't come back to bite us. Allen has been exceptional handling bad snaps this year.

Not only is this team young, athletic and versatile, they are dialed in. BB has this locker room, and it is filled with some quality horses. If the Pats don't win it all this year, it will be a major disappointment.

I was worried about the Lions in general but it occurred to me that I forgot who their coach was. The minute I saw Caldwell on the sidelines I knew we would win. The dirty tactics of their players was the only thing to really worry about. Cheap shot artists.

There has got to be more to Gray getting frozen out for the entire game for missing practice...

.
The ability for this team to bring in players late in TC and during the reg season AND CONTRIBUTE ON GAMEDAY is amazing. Casey Walker, Blount, etc...incredible.

The Pats are rolling and the offense is just humming along. Only poor play calling- McDaniels getting too cute - or playing a soft zone with Revis - will slow this team down.

I also think that a close game would help the Pats. Those early, close games, help to build character. They kill us but I think are good for the Pats.
