From Breer:

"Patriots defensive backs coach Joel Collier will be in Coral Gables, Fla. tomorrow to get another read on Miami safety Brandon Meriweather. Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli already gave him a private workout at the beginning of March, the day after his Pro Day, and this follow-up would show the team is very interested. Collier will work out Meriweather again, something he couldn’t do if the Hurricane was going to go to Gillette Stadium for an in-house visit."

Obviously this means BB has his eye on Nelson or Griffin.

i surely wasnt the 1 who kept saying Meriweather will catch our eye and coaches probably wont pass on him simply b/c his 1 issue

::sarcasm::

anyways..like i've been saying. Meriweather = 2nd best safety whos in shadows because a 1 yr guy who got a few nice picks/hits is around.

Meriweather has very similar skills to Nelson but iwth better leadership, football experience and smarts. and PROVEN versatility..he played a lot of CB this year so his #s went down but hes played FS,SS, CB, ST..hes done it

Not necessarily. He could be sending down the DB coach instead of himself to send a smokescreen that he isn't that interested. BB has already done a private workout with Meriweather, so he could've made up his mind then that Meriweather is his man.

Didn't he have bad combine numbers? (Not saying it shows anything about his ability, just wondering.)

Let's be clear, if it weren't for character issues, he would be a top 16 pick. We'd happily be trading UP to 16 to get him. As it is, I would guess that he isn't even on our draft board.

For those so interested in workouts, we should check what percentage of our picks have been brought in for private workouts.

he didnt have a bad combine..he didnt blow anyone away like Landry but he did alright..4.47 or something close but watching him at Miami over last few years and then at Senior Bowl is what will make him go top 25 wether its us or not

He wasn't impressive at all in the senior bowl.

Sure he was. And he did a little CB coverage in the practices and game and acquitted himself quite well for a Safety.

I love Merriweather and I'm sure Belichick would like to get his Ed Reed. I just hope they aren't teasing us :)

There's a difference between doing something, and doing it well. I didn't see anything great from him or real good for that matter at the senior bowl. I never watch him play in Miami, but he didn't stand out at the senior bowl, and if you're going to compare someone to Ed Reed, I'm expecting that person to stand out. I say all this with a disclaimer, I never saw him play in Miami, so I'm just saying that's what I saw in the Senior bowl.

Can someone tell me if the character issues are solely the stomping in the FIU fight or are there some other things?

Agreed, he did look good in the Senior Bowl, the primary concern for most has been whether there are behavioral concerns that need to be weighed. We know there were incidents, we just don't know if there is a "lifestyle" that could lead to further incidents when he's a millionaire. If Meriweather and Nelson are being evaluated as CBs then the round one CB pool is four deep for talent with Hall and Revis. If he's "just" a FS then I can wait for the middle rounds.

he was very impressive..idk what u were watching. he shut down tight ends and made big hits all over

he was a top 3-5 performer in practice/game during the Senior Bowl Week

There is another incident where he used a legally owned handgun to exchange fire with alleged robbers who shot a friend. No charges filed and public information says it was clear self-defense. Whether there is more information available beyond that I can't say. I'm sure the Pats have dug deep and have looked closely at the coach's tape of the FL Int game.

This SCREAMS smokescreen to me.

were in late round 1..theres no smoke screen here..stupid use

its not like were trying to pretend we need Meriweather

I don't think the BB would waste time by sending Collier for another look if he was off the board

He may be smarter but Nelson blew him away at the combine. He's the clear cut number one for a reason. Still, would you rather have a smart player or a talented player. Devin Hester is talented but I can remember one more than one occasion him making a stupid play just because he tried to hot dog it, fumbling the ball, and giving it to the other team in excellent field position (by the way, Hester comes from "The U" too [I'm a Gator fan]). We have the smartest team in the league on average and it's done us really well. But I feel a safety should be gifted atheletically and Nelson had the better combine numbers so if he was available if I picked, I would take him.

Nelson ran like a 4.5 at the combine, just saying
