Post #288 Fixit: "Stupid Dolphins, acting without proof."

Why would you assume they are acting without proof just because we don't have it?

:D Good Lord......Fixit was being sarcastic.

I respect the instinct to not draw and quarter the guy based on rumors. But I also think it's fair to read something into the Dolphins' rapid move to jettison a starter -- indeed, to erase him and distance themselves from the whole situation. Note that all trace of him has vanished from their website at record speed. We don't know what they know, but they surely know something.

People were sure Richard Jewel was guilty
People were sure the Duke LaCross team was guilty

The examples are legion, and this board loves to moralize about the failings of non-Patriots. Shockingly, there was a lot more "Let's wait and see" about a man named Hernandez just a few months back.

It'd be worth it for when Crazy Messageboard Incognito Dad joins here alone.

And then we feed to get him in a Tebow thread. The meltdown would be...and I mean this...literally apocalyptic. :D

They probably know that the moment racism becomes part of the equation it is a PR nitemare.

The original intent of "hazing" was to integrate a new person into a group. We are basically tribal and when a new person shows up, there needs to be something symbolic to help ease the updating of the group membership to include the new person. Something mildly embarrassing ad subservient, as a show of commitment from the new person, is usually in order. Hence, shaving of heads, or carrying of shoulder pads. The message is, "I'm willing to give up a little of my individuality in order to join this group. So, you can trust that I'm a member and will defend the turf with you." We are, after all, still animals.

It goes badly when a current member of the group is insecure or unstable, not confident in their own membership, and projects that into the process. The intensity is increased so that the new member will remain subservient after the hazing is over, as a way for the insecure member to be dominant and thus create some security for themselves. In a way, the hazing never ends.

So "healthy" hazing has these characteristics:
  • mildly embarrassing and subservient, and keeps the new member psychologically whole
  • a clear end point when the new person is a member of the group

This will be another example of football being forced to catch up to modern workplace standards, and no longer being given a pass on the entitlements of a civil society, such as physical safety and basic protections from bigotry.

Racism will always exist. If you don't think so, you're simply blind.

Incogweedo is an asshat no matter what though.

Yeah, yeah....but we need "CONTEXT".

True, and not just "let's wait and see," but certainty that Hernandez wasn't really involved...because he was a Patriot.

But the Hernandez example is illustrative in another way. The team said nothing, did nothing, until he was arrested, at which point he was gone. And the Dolphins originally issued bland statements about Martin that they were unaware of any issues, and then suddenly something changed and they couldn't cut Incognito fast enough. It's their dramatic shift that has shaped a lot of the reaction here. (Remember that when the original reports about Martin came out, a large portion of the board was speculating about him being "emotionally weak" or "fragile.")

Folks, any discussion about the tax code is for a different forum. Thanks.

It's still early on in this whole episode, but it appears possible, if not likely, that Incognito's employment prospects may be the very least of his problems.

I have no clue how you are interpreting what I said here that would cause you to write that response. Baffling.

And yes, racism may be with us through the end of our species. The opportunity to act on racism is, however, something we are curtailing through the building of a civil society, democratic institutions, etc. And it is slowly be diminished in breadth and impact. My kids, ages 26 and 30, are so far ahead of where I was on this issue at their age, it is truly heartening.

You might want to take this up with the military, and let the military leaders know that all their studies and years of live testing don't actually prove what they seem to prove.
I was going to make the same response. A group of people (especially in a testosterone laden environment) knowing that they went through the same crap builds bonding and teamwork, even if they didn't go through it at the same time.

I hate the word "hazing" because that term is way too vague. So let's just say that I have no problem with the Freshmen carrying the Seniors' helmets off the practice field, and the NFL rookies paying a couple grand a man for dinner, so long as things don't go further than those examples.

So now that Bruschi has weighed in with examples from the Patriots, including a mention of his coach being involved, here's how it will unfold:

-the League will cite the incident as an unfortunate symptom of a Larger Problem
-the Larger Problem begins with leadership
-because the Patriots have been the leaders of the AFC East for nearly every year since anyone can remember, they have the ultimate responsibility
-because the Patriots players and head coach are clearly implicated in past hazing events which undoubtedly sent the message to the other AFC East teams (followers) that hazing is what winners do, culpability for this recent problem lies ultimately with the Pats
-the Pats head coach and team will be fined heavily, and two #1 picks transferred to the Dolphins as the victims in this situation, to help rebuild their offensive line

Fail.

Show me where racial taunting and monetary shakedowns of its own enlisteds are the accepted policy of the officer class of today's US Armed Forces.
Well, first of all, it isn't officers who are drill sergeants and company commanders in armed forces boot camps.. Second of all, while I don't think racial taunting and monetary shakedowns are common, let me tell you that in boot camp (or plebe year at the academies) humiliation and verbal degradation is a regular routine. And there's a reason behind that.

Yes. People are sheep.

Imagine incognito hazing Hernandez. Wonder how that would have turned out.
