I support the attempt by the NYFL to try to derail gambling by players but the punishment far outweighs the crime. That's especially true now that the NYFL is pushing gambling to it's customers in order to squeeze every last dollar from them. Granted, if it's against the rules (which I'm sure it is) then some punishment is in order, but indefinite suspensions is way over the top.

The players better get their contract right the next time or they'll be more like slaves on a plantation than football players entertaining fans. How about a three strikes and your out type of penalty? First offense is a few games, second a few more and the third could be the biggie. Throwing players out indefinitely for a first offense is bogus.

Them "slaves" are cashing close to $7 billion in paychecks each season

I'm fine with a rule that they can't bet on the NFL, and that needs to be a bright line that brings serious repercussions.

But the NFL owners have invested many millions into ownership and promotion of sports gambling,. Gambling is just another dopamine fix and is addictive in that regard to normal humans. You don't need to have a weakness or character flaw. To do that, and then punish their own employees who fall for it, is an absurdity.

They don't want players to get caught up in fixing games in order to earn some extra dough. So much of the NFL relies on perception. It's nothing personal, just business. The basic logic is sound. We've had players influenced by gambling concerns in the past, even refs.

The players are in a bad spot when it comes to gambling. The league is now endorsing gambling on football yet the players are not allowed to gamble on the games.

The punishments handed down to date have been draconian. The players association needs to get on this asap and have a new section added to the CBA. While it might have been included before (I don't know if it is or isn't in the current CBA) the repercussions need to be clearly defined and agreed upon so everyone knows what's at stake, pardon the pun.

And the PA needs to capitalize on the gambling money, if it already hasn't. Players need their slice of the pie. Might be a good way of funding long term benefits for the players. Or not. But it needs to be investigated.

The way it stands now though, players are staring at a 1 year ban for gambling in club facilities. Oof that's a tough one to not get the memo on... And I don't blame the league for coming down hard on this... They have invited the devil to the dance, and now are on a slippery slope vis a vis integrity of the league...

The NFL players should be able to bet on anything outside the NFL. Suspensions for betting on the NBA, if legal, are absurd.

Not sure I understand Johnathan Jones' take here...

“I understand rules are rules,” Jones said. “But I can risk my life so that my team wins but I can’t risk 1k on my team winning .”

Even if you bet on your team to win, you can play half-*** in order to cover the spread. A player can easily miss a tackle or drop a pass in a game on purpose...

How about betting while in team facilities? To me that prohibition is justifiable, for several reasons.

Sports betting anywhere, on anything outside the NFL, seems OK to me. Why is betting inside the stadium banned? Am I missing something? There are sports betting advertisements inside the stadium, 10,000s of fans betting inside the stadium, workers betting inside the stadium, owners inside the stadium heavily invested in sports betting and personally promoting sports betting. But a player can't bet on the NBA from the locker room after a game?

Jon Jones makes a case to allow NFL players to bet on their team winning, as long as betting on their team losing is banned. Interesting idea.

Not a player but it's only a matter of time before another Tim Donaghy is found in the NFL officiating crew. IMO.

For all we know, it might have already happened.

because the players/employees have inside information that may not be readily available to the general populace... they could in theory, take advantage of things like that... kinda like how every congressman, regardless of which side of the aisle they sit, plays the stock market / commodities / futures etc and always, some how for whatever reason (/s) seem to profit...

Doesn't the ban on NFL gambling in general take care of this issue?

I just am having a hard time seeing what is so different between betting in the stadium on anything other than NFL and betting outside the stadium on anything but the NFL

Based on the rule, some people and the league think it is a big deal, but I am having a hard time understanding the difference.

Couple of factors that to me make it acceptable to ban betting by players inside team facilities. First is basic premise that the employer has the right to determine code of conduct expected of employees while at work. If you’re at work you should be focused on work, not distracted by anything else. My employer does not allow viewing porn while at work. Nor is gambling allowed in our workplace. I see no reason players and other team employees should get special treatment in this.

Second is practical. My professional gig is cybersecurity. I know how my employer monitors for prohibited activity within our facilities. I’d expect the NFL has equal technology. It’s much easier to detect activity going to a bookmaker and say “that’s bad” than it is to detect that activity and then have to figure out if it was an allowed bet on an NBA game or prohibited activity like a player betting on NFL games or even just sharing game plan information in return for special treatment by the bookie. Much easier for teams to wash their hands of it by prohibiting any betting related activity in their facilities. That takes them off the hook. Whatever a player does outside team facilities is the player’s responsibility not the team’s.

so if Johnthan Jones decides NOT to place a wager on his team winning a game does it means he’s not confident that the Pats will win? That would send the betting markets into a frenzy...

re: betting on NFL games - I don't see any accommodations available to the players.

I also have no issue with what Goody is implementing from a punishment standpoint ( I can't believe I agree with Goodell but that's how strongly I feel about the issue). If players are stupid enough to bet on NFL games they should be suspended.

I'm just pissed off that Jameson Williams is suspended for the first 6 games of the 2023 season.

You know players are going to bet on sports ... Not football per the rules... but still, it eliminates the temptation to bet based on recently gained info... People do stupid things... just because you can't bet on football doesn't mean you won't... Eliminates the appearance of impropriety if they just nix betting in league owned facilities
