Rumor: MJD to be traded to the Pats?

No clue why people are talking about kick returning. Last time he returned a kick was 2009

MJD for Bequette? Hahahahahaha!!!! If MJD were in a coffin, the Jags would still be getting screwed on that one.

If we're only giving up Bequette this is a great deal for us. Makes me question the validity of this rumor. LOL

This is the only response that makes sense in this thread. Everyone else is whistling past the graveyard.

No need. Ridley is a better runner

Pass catching out of the backfield, blocking in the backfield, kick returning.

No one is talking about him being the featured back.

Him and Vereen = 2 Kevin Faulks. You can never have enough of those guys. It would help offset some of the OL weakness and the learning up curve of the new WR's.

A sixth-round pick for a proven commodity that would bring stability to the New England running game and give Brady another target that he can have confidence in? Sign me up.

I thought this was a real rumor until I read this

Greg Garber of ESPN brought up an interesting hypothetical; Maurice Jones-Drew to the Patriots. MJD has been wasting away with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and it's about time he plays for a contender.

Some schmo making stuff up to write a column, nothing to see here.

I was under the distinct impression that the MJD trade rumors all began with a 'trades that should be made' column that had absolutely zero veracity, and was just something put together for entertainment purposes only by the entertainment and sports programming network.

It seems to me that some in the media are now taking that fictional piece of writing, and re-reporting it as factual. It's really not all that different from what happened earlier this week with the speculation about Favre coming out of retirement to play with the Rams: a bogus rumor spreads like wildfire, just like that exercise that teachers use when one student tells something to the next, the second one tells a third, and so on and then you compare the original statement to the final one - and it's not remotely close to the original.

It kind of makes me question why we didn't keep Woody though. Woodhead was the ideal 3rd down back, very elusive and reliable hands out of the backfield. Was he having problems with pass protection?

It wouldn't have been a problem if Leon Washington's backside didn't get subsequently stapled to the exercise bike.

Had Shane Vereen not had the wrist injury we proabably would have all but forgotten about Woodhead. Only with the benefit of hindsight does it make sense to have re-signed him rather than signing Washington.

And had Washington not been hurt and not signed by the Patriots, then I am confident that many Pats fans would be asking why the team did not sign him when they had the chance to do so, instead of relying on Woodhead or Blount to return kickoffs.

I don't think the team anticipated both Vereen and Washington missing the first half of the season. It's rare to be able to go three-deep in specialized roles.

This. Vereen's performance at the end of last season made Woodhead look like a very insignificant player in comparison.

Obviously, the team did not anticipate these injuries.

"It’s certainly way less, way, way less than what there is at the 53 cut, just to pick another period of time or maybe the week before, like at the 75 cut. There’s a lot more conversations there about the makeup of your team and who you need and who might be extra and those kind of things. You’re looking at a 16-week season at that point."

"You need more, there’s less available, it’s a shorter season, you’re trading for a guy for just a short amount of time. How quickly can you get him ready, how productive will it be, was it really worth it? Is it worth it to the team who is trading away the player to get not very much for somebody versus just keeping him and playing with him even though you get something for him but it isn’t really worth it?"

"I don’t know much about baseball, but maybe a third baseman on this team, put him at third base on the other team and let him hit. How much is there involved? I’m sure there’s some but it’s not like playing left guard, having 20 different protections and two dozen running plays and a dozen different defenses you have to block every week. It’s a little more involved."

I'm not even sure I'd classify the source of this "rumor" as media. Looks like some nobody on Twitter.

I wouldn't go that far. Woodhead's career yards per carry is 4.6. Vereen averaged 4.0 last season, and he only had 9 catches, so it's hard to really talk about his YPC there, especially since one 83 yard play skews the data. Woodhead's been the better player, career-wise, to date, but he was coming off of a down season and the Patriots obviously like Vereen's potential.

MJD on Jax has been killing my fantasy team. Can only go up on Pats.

I approve this trade.

Chris

If he really is some kind of big pass-blocking upgrade, who therefore is more useful on all downs/distances than one might first think, acquiring him makes loads of sense. Send a useless player or two back to trim the cash/cap hit a bit.

Otherwise, I don't see it, for the reasons previously stated.
