Has anyone here tried out for an nfl team?

I remember those Navy intramural games. Never signed up because most of the guys were crazy !!

;)

Most games had, as a form of payment, a keg of beer (or three) and sliders & dogs waiting for everyone afterward. Sort of a reverse tailgating thing. :D

I worked with a guy who made the Cowboys' roster and played sporadically before he was cut. His knees were shot before he turned 30 and through him I gained a lot of respect for how damn hard it is to make the cut in the NFL, let alone be a starter or a star.

That's why I don't get into a lot of the bashing of players that goes on here and elsewhere; none of us could survive what they have survived to get where they are. IMO, anyone who makes an NFL roster deserves respect.

Eh, you are made of glass. :D

The stupid bashing was even worse around here before Marquise Hill's death. Some people felt guilty for how personal they'd make their dislike of a guy who wasn't a good use of a draft choice or roster spot.

Sorry, but I haven't ever observed much guilt here over personal dislike of a player, alive or deceased. I'll offer Julian Edelman as a case in point. All he's ever done is played his ass off every second on the field and produced beyond his apparent ability. Of course, around here, getting injured is as inexcusable as any capital crime one can commit. I'm convinced Edelman has planked the wives or girlfriends of some posters on this board.

I remember playing every day on the street. Getting tackled on concrete, eyeing where all the sewer hub caps and street corners were before I got the ball, so I could avoid being hurt bad. Really taught me to hate being tackled.
1st time I played on a team was completely shocked by the pads stopping the bad hits, and grass felt soo soft crashing into it, I would stand up smiling

In high school they said I was to slow to be a RB. The coach made me a right Guard because I was small, but knocked everyone on their butt.
Before the 1st game I talked to the second string grey team and told the coach. Im a running back, I always will be, give me a shot.
Gartrell said if you quit the 1st string and tryout I'll give you as shot, but your slow kid and I'm not promising anything.
The 1st year I made 28 TD’s and 2700 yards in 9 games , lost at the championship.
Head coach of 1st string team was fired and Gartrell was made HC, and I was the half back for 3 years. Last year of High school I had 32 TD’s in 8 games and over 2600 yards. I ended up having over 10,200 rushing , and all I cared about , 112 TD’s.
I didnt have a clue if that was good or not, lol. Turned out later they timed me wrong and I ran a 4.35 in the 40.
I was approached by a NFL talent scout, and I was accepted to the florida State. Its was fun, I had the sight. Loved running the ball.

I accually feel kind of Al bundy saying this lol

Good on ya, Pherien! :rocker:

Perseverance is always a good thing.

I can't find it now, but I'm pretty sure I recall an actual apology thread about the harsh words that hard been directed at Marquise Hill before.

I have been a Edelman ball-washer from Day 1 but I don't want to derail the thread.

What is interesting to me is Ken's experiences. The NFL's lack of teaching fundamentals because they have multimillion dollar investments seems counter-intuitive. You would think that they would want fundamentals to be #1 so that people weren't knocking players out along with teammates and themselves because they don't know how to tackle.

I blame the college game where they churn these guys out, wring every buck they can out of them with nothing really on the line if they get hurt. Practice time is even less in college because of the NCAA (which is good I believe, because these guys really need to realize that so few make it that they better have a degree that can get them a job).

For the coaches though, I think the less practice time and pressure to win with millions on the line for the schools, the easy thing is to ignore the fundamentals and just worry about winning.

We should totally have a patsfans flag football weekend. No relatives or friends. Just contributing members.

I would totally be up for this if nothing more than to meet some of you guys.

I'm 5 foot 6, 147 lbs at 42. You should have seen me in my 20's before I bulked up. I still have some quicks though, maybe I can run the Edelman 4 yard slants.

I volunteer for the "Who can tear his Achilles Tendon fastest while making some really dumb move he has no business making" contest!

Otherwise, I'll bring a couple of six packs and some nachos and dip.

God I sucked at corner, lol. They had me running kickoffs back and on defense they tried me at corner and safety also, but I wasnt that good. Thats a special skill set. In the air I could never figure out where the ball was, lol

Tried out for the jets...but did have enough suck in my blood to make it

I'd do this! I'll play AND bring beer and wings.

Good God, I would hope so. But poor Marquise, God rest his soul, didn't commit the ultimate crime on this board- he merely died, he didn't get injured.

Fan flag football would be the best. I know I could get a NO flag football team together. Wonder if we could get other teams fans to play ? Maybe worth thinking about as a tradition

It actually sounds like a winner of an idea to me. I'll be ironic and wear my Woodhead jersey (6'4" 220).

I agree, and promotes good will. I would like to see us start the FFF, lol.
Fan Forum Football, if the patFans forum leaders are ok we dont play you until 10/13. I think we can both find a field and play. Maybe later talk to the NFL to get time on the real field. Be a hoot.
Im sure either forum can get 53 men or wemon easy.

I think it is beyond comprehension how difficult an NFL camp/tryout must be. The few D1 caliber athletes I have known were absolute freaks their whole lives, and the NFL is the freakiest of the freaks.

Grew up with a kid like that. Utterly dominated local and high school sports. Never made it past the tryouts.
