Front office still interested in Ryan Mallett: Cleveland Browns Insider

I've seen a lot of intriguing trade deals. Some are more optimistic than others, but the one consistent thing is that I think they are all premature. It makes more sense for me for Cleveland and other Mallett suitors to wait until late April, on or just before the draft would be the most appropriate time for any Mallett deal to occur. Cleveland would be better served by waiting for the first blush of FA to subside and see where they stand. Right now they've been pretty active.

QB is a pretty big piece of the puzzle, and you'd they would want that piece in place as soon as possible. One advantage Mallett would have over a rookie is that he could have a month and a half head start learning the offense if a trade were to occur soon.

Yup good point.. I think the biggest shoe that needs to drop is the release of Cassell first.

That allows this deal to get done quickly

No, but I would send them Mallett and the 2014 2 for their 3 this year and their 2014 1.

You realize that's valuing Mallett at roughly a top 10 first round pick right?

So you'd rather take the top 10 pick instead of a 3rd and a 2nd. What a great idea.

at this point, I would take the 6th pick for Mallet, sign fitzpatrick as a backup, then

let both welker and lloyd walk

sign talib, vollmer......and goldson

draft:
1a - DE ezikiel ansah
1b - DT sylvester williams
2 - WR robert woods
3 - WR ryan swope

woods and swope were both very productive in college and both are ahead of the curve when it comes to route running......

find some vet WR production for short $$

Cassel just released

Reading that story I'm less convinced than ever of Mallet to Cleveland. No 2nd round pick that most here want even though I (NOT the Pats GM) would take their 3rd plus a conditional 2014 pick. Then again, I didn't think Welkah to Denvah was gonna happen either.

Interesting.. I actually think the scenario of Ahtyba Rubin and the Browns 3rd round pick sounds pretty good.

Ahtyba Rubin is young underrated 4-3 interior DT that can push the pocket..

The big hinging piece to this deal is Cassell imho...

With the Titans releasing Matt Hasselbeck, there's some good experienced potential backups on the market in Hasselbeck, Kolb and Fitzpatrick should we decide to trade Mallett.

No Mallett for Fitzgerald swap............very upsetting

"According to the Arizona Republic's Kent Somers, there is "zero chance" the Cardinals trade Larry Fitzgerald this offseason.
A Fitz trade is "not happening," reported Somers, who noted that Arizona would absorb a whopping $15 million cap hit to move Fitzgerald. (The Cardinals are already not in great salary-cap shape.) Since Colts owner Jim Irsay tweeted his team was pursuing wide receivers, many rumor mongers have speculated Fitzgerald could be headed to Indianapolis. Look for the Colts to add a significantly lower-profile receiver such as Doug Baldwin or Davone Bess.

Hasselbeck would be the perfect backup if they traded Mallett, pls of course, he is the son of a former Patriot!

That's a good point. If they make the trade now, Mallett could be working on the new offense during March and most of April and have a 6 week head start before OTA's begin. HOWEVER I still think that nothing but talk is going to happen until on or just before the draft.

It sounds as though the Browns have locked down Grimes as well. That was the one big missing need they had aside from QB. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean anything, but if they were swapping #6 for #29 and Mallett, it would be an easier sell to fans when they can point to the all the FA's they signed to fill needs.

I'm thinking that Mallett would STILL be a tough sell for Lombardi if they gave up something really high this year. I mean Mallett doesn't even have a good pregame tape that you could write home about. So I think if a deal WERE to go down it would have to be over 2 years. If they gave up a lower pick (say 5) this year, then a 2nd pick in 2014 that was conditional from 4-1. With the one coming if Mallett leads them to the playoffs. I think Browns fans would be THRILLED to give up a #1 for that rare gift. And something like a 2nd if he turns out to be the starting QB. I think Brown fans would be OK to give up a 2nd in 2014 for a starting QB they can get behind.

Where would Ryan Mallett go in this year's draft class if he were coming out now? I think thats the minimum you would expect to get for a trade. The two years in the NFL with a great franchise probably make him worth a bit more.

Well Daniel Jeremiah who's a former NFL scout said that he'd be his 2nd rated QB in this draft class.

The one problem for teams maybe trading for Mallett is they can't negotiate a contract with him until next year. What if he doesn't want to negotiate with them? They give up a valuable draft pick for a 2 yr rental. It's a risk.

I just don't get how that's a bad thing compared to him being in the final year of his contract, and having potentially to renegotiate BEFORE knowing what he can do in your system.

I'm sure the Browns could find a way around that (i.e. organise the premise of a long term extension on the quiet) before trading for Mallett. It should be an easy sell for the Browns. Mallett offers hope in direct comparison to the crap the have at QB.

they could franchise him, he's making under a million this year and next. Even if he gets 20 million that's a three year average of $6.6 million.

They could franchise him and lock him up like we did with Cassell.
