CB / ST player Kyle Arrington re-signs for 4 years

That would make sense if there wasn't a surfeit of quality corners on the market.

Yeah, if the Pats were signing CBs because they thought Dennard was going to be in jail this season, the Pats wouldn't be signing a guy who is really bad outside and is one of the better slot CBs in the league.

Everyone needs to keep in mind, without arrington, we get shredded by the best wr trio in sb46. He held Cruz to 4 receptions for 22 yards. He isnt a decent slot Cb, hes a great one. The position is a near starter role in todays NFL.

Get four guys that can play outside so he can focus on the slot permanently for the next four years, and this is a good deal.

Our defense was at its best when he we had Talib/Dennard outside and Arrington in the slot. Wouldnt it be great to build on that chemistry?

I kinda agree with this, maybe Arrington is overpaid (and I agree he is), but slot CB is for all intents and purposes is a starting role in the NFL and plenty of good outside corners blow when they move over to the slot.

They still have plenty of cap room and there are still good corners left, so it's too early to draw any conclusions. If they end up not having enough cap room to re-sign Talib or to do something else important, then yes this is a horrible move. That's several more contracts away from happening though.

Umm... Could've had Sean smith for 2 more million. This is exactly what I hate about bills strategy over pay for mediocre talent. Especially this year where there's real talent to be had for an extra million instead of an extra 6 million in other years.

Overpaid this is terrible. If they don't get talib back the secondary will he a disaster and he's injury prone so...

Should've been active earlier in the CB market.

Well they managed to hit the exact $$$ per year where I would not like the deal. I'll wait to see the structure before really getting bothered by this.

Smith = Outside CB
Arrington = Slot CB

Arrington = Slot CB

Exactly ? Real outside corner for marginally more than a slot corner? You can move Dennard to the slot and he'd be just as good as Arrington and your secondary as a whole would be better with talib smith Dennard. Now it's going to be the same as last year for more cap dollars.

Acting like they couldn't get a slot much more easily thru the draft so this is a good deal is crap.

Cole gave up 90 yards and 2 TDs in the slot in about 3 quarters in the AFCCG. The slot CB spot is important.

This could also mean they don't expect much of if any at all, impact from Dennard and his pending legal issue.

That or, the contract signed by Arrington was offered to Talib's camp which they in likelihood, balked at. And instead the Pats gave it too Arrington while moving on from negotiating with Talib. Similar to the what the Steelers did to Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown last season.

If its the latter scenario, you can expect it to be a virtually certainty that the Patriots will be drafting another CB in the first round next month.

Or the market for Talib is much softer than we think while the market for Arrington was much stronger than we think so they wanted to get Arrington wrapped up knowing they could wait on Talib.

We really don't know the whole story at all, except that the only team other than New England to show interest in Talib is a team with cap issues.

4 years/$16 Million with 8.5M Guaranteed.. WAY TOO MUCH F'IN money for Arrington..

So, let me see if I have this right - 10M for Arrington over the next two years is fine, but 12 million for Welker over the same period is too much. Are you f---ing sh--ting me (OK, cue the homers).

Your argument will have validity if:

A.) The Patriots don't bring back/replace Talib
B.) Dennard is, shockingly, spending the entire season at the ironbar hotel
C.) Dennard goes in the tank on year 2
D.) No depth CB is brought in due to cap issues.

Time will tell. Frankly, getting two more outside CBs, moving Dennard into the slot and having Arrington as an overpriced CB4 seems a lot better to me than what's been done in recent years.

Wasting dollars on mediocre players. Oh yeahhhh.

True, but it really looks awful now because they don't have their #1 corner yet. I'd actually be fine with this if I knew Talib was locked in.

You don't need to wait to see its obvious this is overpay for a guy who can only operate in the slot and might as well be Kyle Airington when on the outside as in he's about as good at defending a receiver as a patch of air is.

You do need to wait, particularly given this team's struggles in the defensive secondary since 2007.

Whine whine whine whine whine

Can you stop stalking me to call me a whiner? Failing to discuss the argument again and just calling me a whiner because I disagree with Bill the GOAT.

Also they could give this much to Arrington and not Welker ? I didn't even want welker but he's worth more than 6 million if arringtonis worth 4

Indeed. But the majority of logical fits for the Patriots are already off the board for various reason.

Just off the top of my head:

• Chris Gamble, retired
• Sean Smith, signed with the Chiefs
• Keenan Lewis, signed with the Saints
• Sam Shields, tendered by the Packers (2nd round)
• Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, signed with the Broncos

Those corners all possess legit #1 CB ability. That basically leaves the aforementioned Talib, Nnamdi Asomugha, and Brent Grimes. All three of them carry significant risks in their own right. Talib has injury and character concerns. Asomugha has age, desire and declining skills issues. While Grimes also has injury concerns. Do you think it's wise to lock up either of those players in the $4-6M range after just giving $4M to Arrington. That's seems like a awful lot tied up for players with obvious risks, in my opinion.

The Patriots could always go after rapidly aging and declining bargain basement JAGs like DeAngelo Hall, Sheldon Brown, Terrence Newman, Quentin Jammer, etc. Though they may end up having too anyway, if Talib doesn't come around.

Fine well see. But if talib isn't brought back what do you think the secondary will look like ? I'm not a fan of drafting a Cb again in round 1/2 we've done that for like 5 years now

Ill be shocked and upset if we dont sign a #1 CB. The Schefter tweet is reassuring, as he thinks Talib will wind up back in New England.

Our depth chart will hopefully be: Talib, Dennard, Dowling, rookie/JAG, Arrington, with Arrington as the slot.
