The 2013 Prospect Thread

I'd have to think long and hard on using a top 10 on Ansah. 15-30 seems like a worthy risk on a guy from a small school with his freakish measureables and production. Albeit his production is against very weak competition.

For every Jpp there is a Larry English. Or somewhere in between like Muhammed Wilkerson who is a very good player btw. What I think will separate Ansah will be his first step.

That's a fine philosophy, manx, but there are other positions of non or lesser need that can be drafted for. We have two studs signed for the forseeable future to big, long term contracts with competent back-ups. Any skill position investments should be used elsewhere as we're the deepest in the NFL at that position.

Since when is TE considered a "SKILL" position?

And, something to think about, though we have Gronkowski, Hernandez, and Ballard as the top 3 TEs, Gronk and Hernandez can't seem to stay on the field and Ballard is coming off a pretty serious injury. We can be optimistic about them, but the reality is that using a later round pick on a developmental TE isn't a bad idea.

As I mentioned in another thread, the sort of mismatches you can create with having Gronk, Hernandez, and another TE on the field at the same time are enormous. Particularly if it's someone healthy like Ballard.

Alec Ogletree has been charged with DUI.

Considering he already had a four game suspension at the start of the year for drugs, this could well affect his stock (#obvious).

Still think Jeff Fisher and the Rams might take him with their 2nd first. Judging by last year, he likes high upside players and isn't put off by disciplinary problems.

As for whether this means he'll fall to us, as much as I like him, and I really do, I think he's off the Patriots board anyway because he's just not disciplined enough for BB's defense.

They already have Hooman as an RFA if they want him, and Brad Herman who was on IR. Using a draft pick on a TE would be a luxury unless they see him as a clear upgrade over those two.

I'll be honest. I don't see the Pats putting an RFA tender on Hoomanawanui since you're talking about 1.323 million just for the right of first refusal.. They may re-sign him at minimum salaries, but not much more. Yes, Brad Herman is returning from the IR, but what is he really? He's not got the height or athleticism of Gronk and he doesn't have the speed and route running ability of Hernandez. He was a pass-catching TE with Iowa who was a decent blocker. Whether or not that amounts to anything at the Pro level is another story. He's a question mark and coming back from an Achilles tear that required surgery. I think that makes it even more likely the Pats look at a TE from the draft, though the player may be a UDFA.

A couple on nuggets I found interesting from Tony Pauline's latest update:

Pre-Combine Notes 5.0

Another wide out that’s been impressive is Conner Vernon of Duke. He’s shown some of the most consistent hands in training and runs outstanding routes. One other thing to keep an eye out for; I’ve been told though Vernon does not have the breakaway speed, as evidenced by his tape, he runs the fastest ten yard splits of anyone he’s training with (including the aforementioned Allen and Bailey). His problem if from 20-to-40 yards. That being the case, Vernon will get a lot of looks from teams that run the west coast offense based on his ability to get off the line. I’m also told Vernon is a “solid kid” which will further help his cause.

This could be important in terms of a Patriots fit.

Ryan Swope of Texas A&M has also looked terrific in the lead up to the combine. Scouts estimated Swope runs in the mid 4.5’s but I hear the reality is different. He’s been running in the low 4.4’s during training and has stood out in the jumps and agility drills. Most are already familiar with his sensational pass catching skills but if Swope is able to turn some heads at the combine with his athleticism and speed then say hello second round.

Never thought of Swope as being overly athletic but if this info is right, I'd become more interested. Look forward to him at the combine.

Finally, and I apologise for sounding like a stuck record:

Finally, Nick Kasa of Colorado is targeting sub 4.7-seconds in the forty at 270-pounds during his combine workout. His weight at the Senior Bowl was 271lbs. We’ve written about Kasa since December and know scouts love his upside. He’s presently ranked as a 4th round pick on our boards but a sub 4.7/forty could put him into day two of the draft.

For comparison, Gronkowski ran a 4.68 at his pro-day weighing 258.

Ogletree was also arrested in 2010 for larceny. 3 strikes. Sometimes good people make bad decisions but at some point they add up and the player is simply a bad person.

I know we drafted Dennard. But, his appears to be a one-time incident. Ogletree's behavior is one of that whom will be in jail before his first contract is up. I was considering him with the thought that Hightower could slide into Ninko's role. Ogletree could take that WOLB slot. Scratch that now.

Should we start researching Barkevious Mingo? Mike Mayock, in a conference call, apparently said that he see's Mingo as an end of first round pick only.

I don't understand how he is universally ranked top 10, let around 1st round. He looks meh on tape.

He's long and explosive and has the fastest get off in the draft. He was also used for contain by LSU rather than exclusively getting after the QB.

I see him as a LB rather than base DE perosnally.

Just found this. Have a look at the bottom left quadrant.

Alot of pressures. I just don't see him being a DE at the NFL level. He'll probably run some crazy 40 time like a 4.45 which will help his stock. I read he projects to a 3-4 OLB though as a LB.

I'm thinking more Von Miller type. He did make one of my favourite plays ever. They might be TE's, but this ranks as "setting the edge". And how!

Ansah looked great in the Senior Bowl but was not special in his teams college bowl game.

I would be afraid of him.

Dane Brugler and Lance Zierlan, who's father is an NFL OL coach) say that they are hearing that Barrett Jones is a 3rd rounder at best.

I lived in Houston for 8 years. I am a big fan of Lance Zierlein. He both has good sources and knows how to look at film. He is wrong a fair bit, like everyone in the projection business, but I have him on my short list of analysts whose work I greatly value. I might not always agree with what he says, but I always consider his opinions thoughtfully.

Potential UDFA Woodhead replacement?

Sam McGuffie (RB/WR, Rice) had a monster regional combine:

4.28 40
41.5" Vert
11.2 Broad
3.8 Shuttle

It's not like he's a midget either at 5-10, 198.

Nice find. Rice is a pretty underrated academic school in the Northeast. He should be able to handle the complexities of the playbook. He may well be an UDFA replacement for Edelman, if he walks in FA. It seems that despite his highlights, in 2012 pretty much shifted from a rb to a wr.

Carries YPC Receptions YPR
2008 (Michigan) 118 4.1 19 9.2
2010 197 4.5 39 9.8
2011 (7 games) 38 4.2 9 8.0
2012 5 3.2 54 11.2

Mayock said today that Alec Ogletree would be a top 15 player if it weren't for his 2 arrests and 4 game suspension for drug use.

Ogletree has Ravens written all over him at 32.
