First Report on Jeff Demps

i want to see the Johnson vs Demps race for charity ... NFL Vets charity.

I heard Brady and Big Vince talking about doing a race for charity. I think Vince could win.

The other day I thought of something similar, an NFL Charity Track & Field Meet, with all the different events, Vince would do shot, Demps sprinting, RG3 hurdling etc... a ton of NFL players were track stars in high school and college, you could probably get a few per event to participate.

I noticed the report said that Demps was 5 pounds lighter than his playing wieght at Florida. That got my notice, especially because he is so small to start with. I'm not sure Demps can last 16 games even with the 5 extra pounds.

He is going to physically wear down a lot quicker than the other rookies, but hopefully catch a second wind in time for a deep playoff run.
Could have shed the weight for the olympics (i would think lighter is faster) and hasn't gained it back yet.

I think it would be hilarious to change the Pro Bowl to a tournament in which every team has to field players to compete in Track and Field as well as football related events for a chance to win a separate trophy.

Think something like the Olympics.

Wes Welker doesn't stay in to block LBs running straight at him and the occasional rogue DL. Wes Welker blocks DBs and LBs who haven't built a head of steam yet.

Nope but he does regularly work the middle of the field where the same LBs try to decleat him every catch.

Demps reportedly dropped almost 15 pounds for the Olympics ~ I'm actually happily surprised that he's put so much back on so quickly.

Have you watched Tape on'm? Of course you have ~ who hasn't??

He's very compact, and at that Height ~ 5.8 ~ 185 - 190 pounds makes him pretty much strapped.

All physical factors matter, of course, but many folks make the mistake of thinking that just because a guy is smaller, means he's gonna get killed out there. 'taint so.

It's the stiff guys, above all, and the relatively gangly guys, as well, who are most susceptible.

Limber, Compact, Fluid guys like "Jettin" Jeffrey Demps are actually the least likely guys to get injured...all the more so when they happen to be in phenomenal ~ oh, say: Olympian?? :D ~ shape.

And, yes: I just knocked on wood, anyway.

Every little bit helps. :D

Sometimes, it sure does seem like some people see every mistake as a colossal failure that MUST BE ANSWERED FOR, instead of, you know... a mistake.

I thought this was an interesting tidbit from Reiss:

Fears said that Demps is the fastest player he’s coached in his 37 years in the game (22 in the NFL). He doesn’t think it will be long before Demps gets himself into game shape.

Fears also said that Demps was couragous in biltz pick-up practice. Look, to borrow a term from BB, "he is what he is" a kick returner and pretty much the fastest in the league. He already knows most of the offense (from Charlie at Florida). He would be great on screens, reverses, and of course the fly. He is by no means an eveery down player, but he could be a tremendous playmaker.

I actually think that that's an excellent idea. Use the Pro-Bowl players to show off their football skills at various events, rather than actually play a game where guys might really be injured, and which a lot of folks are less than interested in.

Nice comment from a usually circumspect BB veteran...

Mary Paoletti‏@Mary_Paoletti

DB84 on Demps"I’ve seen track guys try 2 play fball & it just didn't work out.But this guy naturally is a fball player blessed w/that speed"

A natural football player...something that Bill usually finds a way to coach up to fly here even absent elite speed...

Demps reminds me of something my Godfather told me about nitro in a car.

'Yeah, your car will go fast.....once.'

Yeah Demps will be fast, once, then I could see a ST kamakazi crush his ass ONCE, and then he goes back to BB asking for immediate release.

Except Demps actually played football in college, so it's not like he's never been hit. And if you say, "Well, he's never been hit by a PRO!" well... neither has any other rookie.

Demps' workout with the Pats from the FL Bucs area perspective

Commentary | Jeff Demps impressive in Patriots workout with Tampa Bay Bucs | Sports | Bradenton Herald

Demps says he is not quite ready yet, but he was impressive in his first contact Wednesday.

"I threw him in on the one-on-ones going against the blitzes, and he was courageous," Patriots running backs coach Ivan Fears said. "I don't know about him needing to put on weight. Being heavier might take away from his speed. He is not a weak guy. He was under our system with Charlie Weis at Florida so he has some familiarity with what we do. I am going to let his production do the talking."

"Once I talked to the Patriots, I got the feeling that's where I wanted to be," Demps said. "The guys there acted like I was already part of the team. Spikes played a good role. They took me in like they did when I first came to Florida. It came down to them and the Bucs."

I like the meaning behind your name, but the post pretty much sucks.

I'm pretty sure that the violent collisions with these 350 lbs linemen will help expedite this wearing down thing.

Take a guess at how many collisions with 350 lb linemen Demps will have this year. I would say < 10 myself.

You're aware that Demps played four years of college football, right? I ask because you seem to think that he's never stepped on a football field before, and doesn't know what he's getting into.

Totally agree. How many 350lb lineman are going to be able to catch him on the edge. He's not a between the tackles RB.

He may have to deal with a few DB's or LB's but can't see him being steamrolled by any roadgraders. :rocker:

It's pretty funny hearing Gerald McCoy's quotes about Brady, Belichick, and the Pats in general. Reminds me of these quotes from last year:

Gerald McCoy: “Um, Mr. Brady, can we line up?” | ProFootballTalk

Kinda feels like the guy's lobbying to eventually end up playing here.
