Mike Wallace Considers Pats & 49ers As Options

We win whether we go with Wallace or Lloyd. Gronkowski,Hernandez, a signed Welker and then a true deep threat is a matchup nightmare. Who do you double? Add in a renewed commitment to the running game for good measure to keep those defenses honest.

Assuming we could maximize Wallace's talent, yes, this would be easily the best offense in the NFL and one of the best ever. I don't see it with Lloyd. this is already a great offense; I think Lloyd makes us slightly better.

The Steelers MAIN goal is to keep Wallace and restructured Ben's contract today to pull even with the cap....A few more cuts and Wallace probably stays in Pitt.

http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/54115/steelers-restructure-roethlisbergers-deal

If any team is smart enough to keep good players for a long time,it's Pittsburgh.

I think once they found out that the only AFC team more successful than them in the last decade in the Pats and their hated Rivals in the Ravens both wanted Wallace, the Steelers began a can't afford to lose Wallace campaign.

Wallace isn't going anywhere but may be costing the Steelers some talented players lost since they will HAVE to cut them loose to afford Mike.

No, I still think they are about 2 or 3 million over.

Steelers are restructuring Roethlisberger to free up $8 million in 2012 cap space. Next up is Polamalu.

They haven't even really made and significant cuts though I expect them to cut Casey Hampton due to be overweight, 35, and dealing with an ACL injury.

Even with all this they won't be big players in free agency and are doing everything in their power to keep Mike Wallace. And Wallace seems to want to stay in Pittsburgh so expect a big contract with a lower cap number in year one to fit into whatever space they can clear for him.

The Steelers will be tight against the cap until the new TV money kicks in.

Like you said, they somehow just managed to clear 25 million off the cap in about 2 weeks.

So far they have yet to make even ONE significant cut.

Rumor has it that Polamalu is up next for restructuring. That and one expected move like cutting Hampton, Farrior, or Ward will get them the wiggle room that they need to sign Wallace.

I'm not seeing any 'talented' players that they are losing, and they were pretty much in cap hell.

Just another example (along with the NYJ) that proves how overrated cap problems can be. Yes they will be tight against the cap next year too for one more year, but when you consider the fact that they will likely accomplish everyone they wanted to it's rather impressive.

Personally, the one thing that worries me about Wallace is that the Steelers run a simple offense that just relies on Roethlisberger to run around with the ball and give his receivers extra time to get open. I am still concerned that Wallace is not suited for the Pats complicated offense where Brady gets rid of the ball quickly.

I am 100% convinced that he isn't fit for this offense. The NEP play the total opposite of the backyard football scheme that Pittsburgh and Roethlisberger play.

The benefits that I could see are the ability to bring attn to himself, drawing some double teams at times. That would tend to offer a solution to the 'stretch the field' problems that we've had with our main 4 guys (Welker, Hernandez, Branch, Gronkowski) who don't run many routes over 15-20 yds. He also would likely add to the RAC yardage total on some plays, and make a handful of big plays every so often.

I have to believe that the Wallace talk is complete fantasy, and I also assume that Belichick would never make such a move. Even better, I actually think that Pittsburgh finds a way to keep him this yr too. Just an opinion though, as eveyone has a different view on this.

Pittsburgh seems to be heading towards what Indy did, that is pay a few high priced players while not really looking to what damage could be done on the bottom of that roster when the money simply cannot be spent elsewhere anymore and what you are left with is a few handfuls of Pro Bowl players with tons of talent and left with the majority of the roster as a bunch of JAGs to keep the ship afloat.

The Rooney family is one of the best and smartest ownership in all of sports and if they do sacrifice a lot to keep Wallace, that would be surprising....somehow,someway they keep Wallace and stay competitive with the cap and on the field with talent.

That's what separates great ownership from horrible ones.

With that being said,I hate the Steelers with every ounce of blood in me and I hope keeping Wallace and sacrificing others ends up as one bad mistake for them.

How does anyone not get the interest in Lloyd? He absolutely exploded when McDaniels came into Denver and has arguably the best hands in the NFL. He also produced in a terrible St.Louis offense under McDaniels and we NEED someone who UNDERSTANDS our offense. He didn't show any signs last year of losing a step. Also, Ocho is a great example of why we should pursue Lloyd, someone who already understands the system and can stretch the field(whether you think he can or not)

Again the guy is 31 and i would stay away from him if you are planning to go through the development phase for 1 to 2 yrs.I think he will be lining up against revis/cromatie or davis/sean in our division in 4 games. all 4 are bigger/stronger/physical corner back. I think he more of a gaffney with a little more speed then anything .You put a physical corner and beat him he will be done.In the afc east you need to matchup against these corners on the outside. In our division outside guys need not be burners but have to be strong and taller on a pure matchup .The goal is create issues for even the bigger corners in our division with size and speed.

When has Jabbar Gaffney gotten over 1400 yards and 11 TDs in a season? Gaffney was on the same Broncos team as Lloyd the year that Lloyd put up those stats and Gaffney got 875 yards and 2 TDs. Lloyd is a proven legitimate #1 WR in McDaniels' system while Gaffney isn't.

I also disagree with your premise of the needs. Yes, a big physical guy might have a better shot against Revis, but the Pats can do just fine with a legitimate #1 WR who requires the top CB of any team to shadow even if they effective against them. If Revis is shadowing Lloyd all game, that will leave mismatches for Welker, Gronk, and Hernandez. What hurt the Pats this year at times is that they did not have a legitimate outside threat and opposing teams could put their best CBs on Welker or Hernandez or Gronk.

If you are looking for a big physical WR, than neither Lloyd nor Wallace fit the bill. You need to look at Vincent Jackson. Steve Johnson, or Dwayne Bowe (if they don't get franchised). A big, physical WR would be nice to have, but I don't think it is crucial to significantly help this receiving corp. Adding a legitimate #1 WR threat of any kind will only give Welker, Gronk, and Hernandez (and even whoever the #3 WR is) more opportunities to make plays.

Maybe in a different year, Belichick may be willing to use a first rounder and pay Wallace top WR money to come here; but I can't see him doing it this year for a number of reasons.

First, this year's free agency is flushed with good/great WRs. Dwayne Bowe is likely to be franchised and unavailable, but it is looking good that Vincent Jackson, Stevie Johnson, Brandon Lloyd, Mario Manningham, Marques Colston, Robert Meachum, Reggie Wayne, Pierre Gracon, and Larent Robinson won't be franchised. Plus, Brandon Lloyd really wants to play for the Pats. At least 4-5 of those guys are legitimate #1 WRs and could be top 5-10 WR with Brady throwing to them (or higher in some cases).

Second, you have the Wes Welker factor. How are you going to give up so much for Wallace and then ask Welker to take a deal for about or less than Santonio Holmes got on a per year basis? Odds are the WR the Pats add will be making less than Welker which would rule out Wallace. Still leaves most of the other guys.

I think we are in agreement that Wallace may be the wrong fit to begin with. So the argument is kinda moot.

Personally, I would pay Lloyd and possibly go after a second tier free agent WR too. If the Pats are going to use a first round pick on an RFA, use it on Ladarius Webb and shore up the Pats' secondary.

Cousin, I will throw you a curve ball. Coby Fleener from Stanford. A 6'6" and 256lbs , he is a former B Ball player with ups and soft hands who will run about a 4.6ish 40. I have watched tape on him. He can go deep. He gets separation. He has has some blocking skills on the line. I am trying to understand why the Pats would opt for Randle, Sanu, Hill, Toon or Quick when their times are about the same and Fleener does more. I picture Gronk and Fleener as dual TE's and Hernandez on the wing with Welker slotted. OK Revis et.al stop this! You Fave to consider the run with two TE's in and both run excellent patterns. Pleener also is invaluable for games like when we lost Hernadez for a while and SB 46 with Gronk.

There is your big WR who has what BB wants.......versatility as a TE too.

Obviously if Blackmon, Floyd, Wright and I will include Jeffries because he is the best hands catcher in the Draft, best leaper and will fight for the ball more than the other top three plus with all the "Hernadezisms" and "Spikeseze" being cast at him as fat and slow, he could slide our way late in round one. He played with terrible quarterbacks at Carolina but yet under a valid guru of the passing game in Spurrier, so his upside has not been scratched but I am sure he has been schooled correctly. He has no off the field stuff and I don't know what the talking heads are watching but the man can separate unless you triple Team him which happened.

At the end of the day If you can get a Reggie Wayne who I have more trust in than Lloyd and who has been with an intricate system, take Fleener as your jackknife and opt for a Broyles to slowly work back from a knee and you can get him perhaps in round three and even red shirt him.

Now here is my other 2 cents!. Now use your picks on Defense and perhaps a Center like the kid from Baylor Phillip Blake you can get in round four.Trumaine Johnson at 6'2" and rated as perhaps the best cover CB in end of round two and target Cards S Adrian Wilson who will more than have to be released from the Cards as a $6.5m CAP casualty or hit FA for a Griffith or Branch in the Safety market (I question another rookie S in this Defense) and you are reasonably upgraded.

Like to see:
OLB Curry-1
DE Crick-1 (toip fifteen pick if not for now recover pec injury)
TE/WR/HB Fleener-2
CB Johnson-2
WR Broyles-3 (red shirt?)
C Blake-4

Cheaper BB Value FAs he is fond of-

Pick up FA S Wilson when he is released. He was rated the second best coverage Safety in the NFL last year but is 33 (Think a bigger Rodney for a couple years left)

Sign Wayne as a FA (better option than Branch or Ocho and Cheaper than Lloyd who is only two years younger)

Sign FA DE/DT Adam Carriker who has played well, had 5.5 sacks on a weak Redskins D last year and had more tackles than our interior D lineman combined other than Wifork who is still young and can be inexpensive. Very much like Mike Wright who BB loved.

Now my steal of a cheap FA WR who is way under the radar and your deep threat.
Raiders FA Chaz Schilens stands an imposing 6'4" and weighs 225 pounds. He ran his 40 in 4.38 seconds and had 43'' vertical leap. And he still has an amazing set of hands, something that followed him from his days in San Diego State. Since 2008 he has battled injuries but is now healthy. He has NFL experience and is still young.

Turn over the other two WRs. It was a good run but Branch is less visible every game and has not done a thing to be resigned. Cut Ocho. Not all his fault in the end. He was open. TB would not throw to him and BOB would not target him. A waste. Let's just cut him. He was the best blocking WR we had and kept a low profile. I blame TB and BOB as much as Ocho. Underwood? Nyet. Let's keep Slater on ST and Edelman can still back up at many positions including WR.

I say Koppen goes as his health is in the decline as he ages and as much as I like Law Firm, it's the CAP space to resign him and it may be Ridley's time. Same with Faulk, I want Light and Waters back and we then have some serious O-Line depth. Ellis, Guyton, Jones and Cunningham are not my cup of tea. They under perform. They go. Ihedigbo played out of necessity and was "Sanders like" toward the end of the year as in weak on cover but respectable as a player (but he was about 1/3 rd the cost) . Sergio Brown is not the answer for sure and are Barrett and Dowling ever going to be healthy?

Even if the Pats switch back to 3-4 you should still sign Carter and Anderson because like Nick C said, they still don't play a straight 4-3 or 3-4. Carter was great for the Team as a vet presence guy and Anderson picked up the slack and is still young.

OK I said my piece but Fleener is the sleeper pick that trumps Lloyd, Colson, Meachem or Jackson in my opinion. Wallace would be nice but I think Pitt keeps him somehow. They will cheat the system to allow him to stay...watch!

The funny thing about Wallace is where he was drafted. 84th overall (3rd round) in 2009. The player selected right before him in that draft? WR Brandon Tate....

Lloyd's numbers against quality defenses over the past 2 seasons are fine, despite his being the focal point for opposing defenses during that time. The notion that he can't handle the AFCE falls in the face of that, especially since he would be coming in as a helping part rather than as the primary receiving option.

2010:
Bal - 5 for 135
NYJ - 4 for 74
KC - 6 for 90
SDG - 6 for 78
KC - 2 for 31
SDG - 5 for 73
So, only one poor game against the best defenses in 2010

2011:
SDG - 1 for 20
SEA - 5 for 67
SFO - 1 for 34
SEA - 5 for 82
PIT - 3 for 2
SFO - 6 for 100

So, not as impressive as 2010, but he was in two really bad situations and still put up decent numbers overall.

Again, what if the drop off is more a physical thing? Also the fades and back shoulder throws have disappered from our offense in a consitent manner. You just cannot just play like that. we do not have sanchez so we have to protect him from accurate throws. Brady will nail a throw if you give him a true outside guy.llyod i am afraid is not that guy.

Which lets these CB to redirect to the outside and run along side with no fear of a these throws.

Well here's the difference. I'm basing my pro-Lloyd position on facts and actual data. You're basing your anti-Lloyd position on feelings.

You might be right in the long run, but the odds are in my favor.

I love it, I'm a HUGE fan of Fleener and think he would be MAGNIFICENT on this offense, but I'd like Lloyd as well:D

Also, are you familiar with Devon Wylie (The Coyote)? He'll he less expensive than Broyles but I have a feeling he'll actually be better.

You do realize that Brady passed for 650 yards, 4 TDs, and 1 INT in the two games vs. the Jets. And in the first game, Hernandez was gimpy with an MCL sprain and relatively ineffective.

Down the field threats are overrrated. Even most of the best down the field threats don't catch more than a dozen or so balls down the field a season.

The fact of the matter is adding a guy like Lloyd will significantly improve the Pats' offense no matter if he can't beat a Revis or Cromartie. He will take one of those guys off of Welker, Gronk, or Hernandez and they can do damage on a team like the Jets who are weak in the center of the field.

The Pats were a top rate offense without a single outside or down the field WR at all. Lloyd is a true #1 outside/deep threat in McDaniels' offense. He can only make the offense better.

You seem to not want wan Lloyd because he isn't big and physical and you think the Pats need a big physical WR, but you want Wallace who also isn't big or physical either for the same reason. Where does that make sense. You should want neither and advocate the Pats going after Vincent Jackson. Stevie Johnson, or Dwayne Bowe.

Personally, I want to take the guy who has proven he can be a stud in the offense the Pats have run (Lloyd) vs. a guy who may have more upside, but is an unknown in the Pats' offense with far more risk in what the Pats will have to give up to get him (Wallace). If the Pats truly need a big, physical WR; both should be taken off the board. Personally, I disagree that is what they need. It would be nice, but not a need.

Who cares about giving up a first. Its either Wallace or probably some rookie corner who ends up on IR in week 5.

I would give up a 2nd rounder for Wallace and pay him his $$ in a heartbeat. He is a true stretch the field deep threat. But I would not give up a 1st.
