I was thinking about this..and for the sake of this topic lets say a mobile quarterback is one that runs out side of the pocket, because I think Brady is very moblie, inside the pocket.

Folks say that Rodgers has an edge over Brady because he is a mobile qb, well I think the reason why Brady has been good for over 10 years is because he doesnt run around like a fool. I hear people talking about Rodgers already as becoming one of the best ever, well to be the best ever you have to be around for a very long time.

Every time I see some qb run he gets crushed if he doesnt slide. Do we really want this in Brady? Vick gets injured at least 1000 times a year, Rodgers has had his head knocked around a few times. Tebow is an acception because he is a beast. My point is, being Mobile does not make you better.

Would you really want Brady running around like these fools?

Nope, IMO, BECAUSE he doesnt, makes him the better Qb

just some thoughts.

One thing worth noting: remember that one thing BB asked about running QBs was how often you can have them run w/o risking them getting "broken in half."

lulz how many games as tebow played to be considered a durable "beast"? You wait...it will catch up to him.

Rodgers doesn't run too much...but he can make defenses pay for it when he does decide to run. It might be dangerous but it's also a pain in the ass to deal with for defenses. You might have good coverage down the field but he can still pick up the 1st down.

I have said that for YEARS. Give me the field general every time over somebody with fast legs.

Your wish is my command. ;)

I'm not hating...i think he is an amazing athlete. I'm just saying the way he plays he does take alot of hits and you were saying that he is an exception because he is a beast? He hasn't even played a full season yet so i'm not ready to label him the next iron man of the nfl.

aaron has had TWO great seasons as a QB....all those midiots (spelled correctly, you figure out the two words that are combined) who proclaim him the best ever are tools

you cant do anything like that with 2 years, aaron is not even in the top 10 of all time right now, prob not even top 20

brady is top 3, he IS the top dog of current QBs, including Mr. Rodgers

so ill take whatever way he plays above any others

I'm just saying look at him, and look at Vick..huge difference in body type

To me their is mobility (a QB that will scramble or run with the ball) and then there is maneuverability, the ability to slide in the pocket to avoid a hit or open up a passing lane.

Not always, but quite often the first comes about because the QB has not yet (or never will) effectively read defenses; a little pressure and his first instinct is to run. Maneuverability on the other hand is a trait that is almost always unique only to the very best quarterbacks; their ability to stay in the pocket, read defenses and find the open receiver while seemingly ignoring the chaos around them is a rare characteristic that allows them to be far more productive than their colleagues.

This is true but it also ignores the fact that Tebow is a big strong fullback playing QB

He can take a bit more punishment. How much? I'm not sure, but he impressed me on Sunday.

As for developing as a QB, I think the fast ones are just too often inclined to pull it down and run for it when the first option isnt open. Brady never runs, if you arm is good enough and your reads are good enough, you dont need to run.

Running just exposes you to more punishment than if you're a passer. Roethlisf***er is a big QB, too. So was Culpepper. Both liked to scramble. Both wore down or are wearing down faster than a pocket QB.

Not saying mobile QBs can't be successful but the length of that success is much much shorter than their stationary counterparts.

here's a nice pic of "non-running QB" Y.A. Tittle, pure pocket passer of the NY Giants....

it's not so much mobile as in running for yards, but escapability, the ability to extend the play by rolling out and letting receivers run open downfield. that's the mobility rodgers has that makes him special. not so much the "running qb" like vick or tebow. although if there is an open lane he can and will hurt you that way too.

Yeah, Tittle also played 17 seasons and that pic came from his final season in 1964. Helmet technology was still developing. The picture shows lacerations on his face. We know nothing of the state of his knees and other joints. Sorry, Joker, your picture inadvertently proved my point. If Tittle was a pocket passer, he had a 17 year career. Hardly the shortened careers of many 'scramblers'.

Even worse for your argument (hope I'm not misconstruing your point)...the previous year, he was NFL MVP.

Kinda off track, but that pic of Mallett just got me wondering... Though I never REALLY want to find out, it'd be very interesting to see he and Hoyer's current ability to run an offense in an game setting.

I'm also wondering what Hoyer's current value is. Will some team out there feel he's worth grabbing ? I would guess that even with some media members high on him, that he'd not garner much via trade. Cassel lead this team to 11 wins and he - along with Vrabel - fetched a 2nd...

Is the most likely scenario a return of all three next Fall ? Does Mallett need to be #2 to develop further ? Sorry for going off track.

Charlie Whitehurst fetched a 2011 3 and a swap of 2010 2s, without throwing a single pass in a regular-season game in four seasons.

And note that whoever took Cassel had to take on his franchise tag at $14M+, which meant there was little chance of signing him to a "small" deal.

Ive never really paid any attention (i know sad) to our back-up quarterbacks (hard to when u have brady).

Just how good can mallet/hoyer be?
Obviously it is hard to tell but what is their ceiling?

This last part is fascinating. The ability to simultaneously look down the field for the open receiver and also use peripheral vision and some kinda' weird "sense" capability, like a fish's lateral line, to move around in the pocket and avoid the rush is frankly a bizarre skill that most people apparently are not born with. Brady and all good QBs have this freakish ability. Brady could probably do a Rubik's cube during a car crash, or thread needles while being catapulted off an aircraft carrier. Would be interesting for medical researchers to study Brady's brain and see how it manages to stay focused on man coverage with safeties over the top while 300 pound men are engaging in gladitorial combat all around him.

.... BTW, the researchers need to keep Brady's brain in his head while doing their study. We need him for another five years or so!
