Pats release Leigh Bodden

On a positive note for some, this means that Mr. Bodden won't be on 98.5 anymore, so the people who like to complain about local radio have that going for them until a replacement is found. ;)
:Dlmao :D:D

I wonder if this is just roster maneuvering or a deal restructure (like Banta-Cain in 2009).

That's my guess. I think BB asked him to restructure his deal and he refused.

wtf is going on with our defensive backfield???

yea im starting to get pissed...when the defense finally starts showing signs of life we gut it?

Oh yes because Bodden was soooooo responsible for those signs of life.:eat2:

OK, a quick show of hands for those who predicted that the Pats would cut Meriweather, Sanders AND Bodden outright!

Anybody?

(Remember this one the next time you're tempted to call somebody's roster predictions "idiotic.")

That said, I would argue that BB's handling of the safeties this year was as head-scratching as his handling of the TEs in 2009. [Was Chris Baker really better than David Thomas?]

Our pass rush must really be coming along.

Don't think this decision was based on talent (he was starting) or money (the money is spent, plus Chad and his 5+ million are still here).

Unless someone claims him off waivers and then they pay him, not the Pats.

Right.

Cue the Steeler signing in 3,2...

But seriously, I guess we need to trust that Bill and his staff know what they are doing when evaluating the staff. Cutting Meriweather looks more and more like the right move...I am still perplexed by cutting Sanders though.

Exactly. This was the best time of the year to release him. Now he doesn't have the option of hitting free agency until he clears waivers.

Sanders isn't even getting on the field anymore in Atlanta.

Yeah, people forget that Ras-I Dowling started the year as the starter and when he went down, Arrington not Bodden took the starting role. Odds are that Dowling will get back the starting role when healthy and the trio of McCourty, Arrington, and Dowling should be an upgrade over what the Pats had the last 4 weeks with Bodden and no Dowling.

I didn't see the need to cut Bodden even with Dowling's return (although Greg Bedard says he believes Molden and Adams were out performing Bodden in recent weeks), but Bodden isn't the player he was in 2009. He was a slot CB and apparently he wasn't happy with that role.

I agree that Bodden was 4th behind McCourty, Arrington and Dowling (who I remain high on). I'm just surprised, given the high injury rate for CBs, that they didn't consider Bodden valuable insurance.

BTW, is Adams even on the roster right now? I thought he'd been released again.

Per Mike Reiss:

"Practice squad CB Josh Victorian, who was released earlier this week, is back in the locker room."

I feel so much better about the CB position now.

/sarcasm

What a stupid move. Right before the pitt game with those speedy receivers...wow just when the D starts to get better..more cuts...

Who needs a secondary?

Downling will play one more game this year..tweak something and is out for the year

Possibly a rift between Bodden and Belichick over Arrington getting most of the snaps?

Some guys refuse to sit on the bench and not start....could be one of those situations.

2 Years in a row now with a shocker cut...Bodden this year and Moss last year..IMO I think both situations involved malcontents, not contract problems.

Apparently no one is safe after the bye week these days

FWIW, here were the defensive secondary snaps from the Cowboys game:

CB Devin McCourty – 74 of 74
S Patrick Chung – 73 of 74
S James Ihedigbo – 73 of 74
CB Kyle Arrington – 69 of 74
CB Leigh Bodden – 38 of 74
CB Antwaun Molden – 6 of 74
S Rob Gronkowski – 1 of 74
S Ross Ventrone – 1 of 74

I agree that I am surprised they didn't keep him around for insurance and I agree he is the fourth best CB on the roster when the position is healthy.

I assume that Dowling will play and possibly start on Sunday (him missing yesterday doesn't exclude him from playing). That is an upgrade over what the Pats had at the position since week 2. I think Dowling is a better zone player too based on his college experience.

Oh wait you're right. I think Sterling Moore is our 5th CB.

Very strange indeed.

Money guaranteed, even tho has under performing he was our 3rd CB

Why now? not on monday? or last monday?

Must be a discipline issue.

Do you keep a broken car for back up in case your primary vehicle breaks down?

The rosy possibility, of course, is that all of the PUPpies are tearing up the practice field and they had to squeeze them in somehow. And if you look at the rest of the roster, there really isn't a lot of fat, which is a good thing. ALL of the DLs and LBs are contributing, when healthy.
