Garay fined 15k for Brady hit

So in nfl salarys vs. the real world, thats like any of us getting fined the cost of a D&D large coffee. That'll teach him!

Is there a video of the hit without going to watch the whole game?

He has a salary of $640k this year, so this salary is like a guy with a $100k salary getting a $2344 fine.

The median income in the US is $50,221 according to the census bureau, so thats like hitting the average american family with a $1177 bill.

Just for comparison.

This is bull. No way could a blind ref see it. Just about everyone else saw it though.

My sarcasm button wasn't on...sorry :p

Reinforcing the fact that it was absolutely ridiculous that no flag was thrown.

Expendable income doesn't scale linearly with salary. Someone making a 100K per year has way more than double the expendable income of someone making 50K. Someone making 640K also has more than 6.4 times someone making 100K.

EDIT: Although, considering how well pro athletes handle their money, he probably has to take out a loan to pay it.

Neither of these shows what happened BEFORE he lunged at his knees which is imperative when trying to determine intent.

DISCLAIMER: I am not trying to say it wasn't illegal, I am trying to figure out intent. It was clearly against the rules (a rule I like).

Exactly. There is no way to form an objective opinion of Garay's intent without what happened BEFORE he got there. Even then we won't really know, imo, but it will give one side or the other message board fodder.

Intent does not matter. It was a flagrantly dangerous play. He should know better.

Ummm...looking at the video, however brief, you will notice Pats the OL are all upright and facing downfield...Garay wasn't BLOCKED into the QB....he dove to make the tackle.....

Intent ????

He didn't mean to dive at his knees?

How else can it be interpreted ??? :)

If you have the video "source" of the game (youtube or avi, mpeg etc), you can do it with virtualdub (free) and Adobe ImageReady.

If someone needs a tutorial, i 'll post one.

I said I agreed it was a penalty. He intended to sack Brady. Whether he intended to hurt him or not is in question and, if you are being objective, can't be determined with certainty based on what was linked.

In fact, you wouldn't be able to tell with certainty unless he admitted it actually. You can opine, you could even be right, but you will never know unless he admits it.

Atleast he got fined. I was almost thinking he was going to get away with it,.

Although the fine shouldve been alot more. Atleast $50k.

That was some potentially career ending ****.

The rule says you can't go at a QB's legs. He went at a QB's legs, therefore the fine. Only he knows what his intent was, but intent has nothing to do with the rule. I also don't know if he was particularly hungry at the time, or maybe he had a big fight with his girlfriend the night before; those are all part of his state-of-mind, and none of them have anything to do with whether it's a fine-able hit.

Again, I agree it should have been called at the time and the fine is justified.

I agree, based on the links provided, the fine was too low, no matter the intent. What we don't see is how he got to where he was and why he hit him in the knees. If no one pushed him into Brady or there wasn't some other reason for him going so low the fine should have been $100k, imo, with a suspension if he did it again the rest of the season.

The fine was expected. The refs not calling the penalty on that play was inexcusable. Hopefully this will discourage people from trying this type of tactic that could potentially injure QBs. But somehow 15k doesn't seem enough considering the salary that most of these guys make. I wonder if the NFL considered Garay's salary when assessing the fine? Would a highly paid DE been fined even more?

If you watched the game, you could see he was not pushed or anything. He blatantly dove into Bradys leg.

Sorry, not good enough. I wasn't watching what happened BEFORE he hit Brady and iirc, they didn't show the BEFORE on the replay either. We need a link to the WHOLE play.
