re: Greg Bedard analysis of last night's defense

I was withholding judgement since he came in during the season last year and his head still seemed in Green Bay, but this article and the one yesterday on the changes BB made on the D are both superb. I'm becoming a fan of his work.

His 53 man roster tablet is GREAT. (And, yes, I'm still trying to find out exactly WHO Jeff Tarpinian is! :D ).

Terrific article, here's the first-page link:
Precious little insight on defense - The Boston Globe

Interesting that Love -- who is commonly described as "the only real backup NT on the roster" -- was playing the rushing DT role (mini-Haynesworth), while Richard was playing mini-Wilfork.

Good read. It was definitely noticeable how aggressive our DLs were last night. I can't wait to see Vince and Albert in this scheme.

Conditional Pick trade possibilities (2011 edition)

After the first exhibition game, and the first two weeks of camp, it seems that the opinion of the board is that there are more than 53 legitimate NFL players in the Patriots camp.

Who are the bubble players who could probably get the Patriots a conditional 6th or 7th round pick in the 2012 or 2013 draft. The level of performance needed for these players is not too high (back-up offensive lineman, ST stud, 5th WR etc)

  • Brandon Tate as ST/5th WR
  • Choose one of Wendell/Austin/Morris/Ohnberger
  • Wilhite or Butler as 5th CB/ST
  • Morris
  • Choose one or more of Love, Pryor, Richards, Weston on the d-line

Who else would other teams not mind paying the proveriablly bucket of golf balls and a six-pack to guarantee access to a niche role player from the Patriots?

Re: Greg Bedard analysis of last night's defense

I am inclined to agree that we may trend to a 4-3 under as a base, but quickly go to our 24 nickel once we get into passing situations. The 4-3 under is great as a run stop scheme, and with Wilfork and Haynesworth in the middle, that will most certainly put the other team into a 2nd/3rd and long situation.

What I saw last night was a big improvement on our atrocious 3rd and long record (worst in the league last year) but there is plenty of room for improvement. Still not there in zone coverage yet.

Re: Conditional Pick trade possibilities (2011 edition)

Tate would net something, as would Pryor. I'm very confident that Love makes the roster. Other than that, I think the interior OL and CB guys are too bad to get a pick, and Morris doesn't want to play anywhere else.

Re: Where the position groups stand

We could certainly use an addition at OLB and a backup OL or two; but this team is ready to compete for the SB.

OFFENSE
Simply awesome!
Belichick has taken one of the very best offenses in the league and added Ochocinco and some youngsters at OL and RB. Extending Mankins and Light was obviously key, giving time for Solder and Cannon to develop. Ridley looks to be ready to take signifcant reps this year. Green-Ellis, Woodhead and Ridley provide a reasonable base of 3 running backs.

FRONT SEVEN
Belichick is likely to have one more addition. This front seven should be much better than last year, even if a couple of the additions don't make the team. We're not losing anyone from last year's team other than Banta-Cain, so there should be significant upgrades.

CORNERS
No team can do much better than having Butler and Wilhite competing for #4 reps with a highly drafted rookie. We are rock-solid with Bodden coming back, even if he isn't 100%.

SAFETIES
This is a concern for the future, not for 2011. We have three starters. We also have special teamer Brown as an emergency #4 safety.

DOWLING
It seems that his future is at safety. In any case, Dowling should be able to be at least a backup at either corner or safety this year. After all, we have 3 starters at both corner and safety. That's all we NEED. In addition we have Butler and/or Wilhite, Brown and Dowling.

I'm becoming a huge fan too. He doesn't straddle the fence on things. He's gives specific opinions based on what he has witnessed in camp, and I love that. Yesterday, when he was chatting, he gave a bunch of nice tidbits. Before the game, he mentioned how good Price had looked in camp, but mentioned he has been dropping a bunch of punts, which could hurt him. It allowed me to watch that closely last night, and of course the kid looked great. He also (in order) gave his predictions of which undrafted free agents would stick. I think he's the best thing to happen to this town. He brings real info, and isn't afraid to voice his personal opinion.

P.S. - He also said that he LOVES the camps that both Pryor and Love have had.

Re: Greg Bedard analysis of last night's defense

Great write-up by Greg Bedard on what the Patriots were doing on D last night. Interesting note that there were 16 team's scouts there last night. Might make it tough come cut time (harder to slip players past other teams).

The flip side is guys who are getting cut can be traded.

It's a dicey proposition to wait until someone is cut and sign.

Nice article. Thanks for linking.

Re: Belichick a fan of Mankins, Fletcher & Anderson

Just read that.. good for them, they deserve the praise.

FWIW it was amazing how far downfield Maneri was blocking last night on some of the running plays.

Re: Belichick a fan of Mankins, Fletcher & Anderson

Can somebody tell me what Anderson did in the game to make BB think that?

Made most of his limited snaps on 3rd downs by getting good pressure constantly off the edge.

Re: Belichick a fan of Mankins, Fletcher & Anderson

He got pressure on the qb almost every time he got put in at the beginning of the game. When it was in doubt. He beats out E. Moore on my 53. My 4 de's are S. Ellis, J. Cunningham, A. Carter and M. Anderson. 4 DT's. Vince and Fat Albert. M. Wright. M. Pryor and R. Brace. G. Warren could beat out Pryor or Brace.

Wow tough call on Anderson beating out Moore. But I have to give you credit, I went back and watched the first half of last nights game again. Anderson applied constant pressure on the QB, so maybe your onto something.

Re: Belichick a fan of Mankins, Fletcher & Anderson

I didn't count or anything, but one of the guys at PatsPulpit credited Anderson with 8 hurries:eek:
