Pat Patriot or Flying Elvis?

I am the opposite. I never liked Pat Patriot. I think the Flying Elvis is cool and I like him much better.

I understand what you're saying. I've been a Pats fan since the 70s. But, I'm a fan of the team today. And I show it with Flying Elvi.

Very cool image! (Not easy to take one's eyes off the sig, either!!) :rocker:

In 2002 they wore the old uniforms in a THanksgiving day win at Detroit. It was very cool. During the Super Bowls I sometimes thought it would be nice if the team I was watching was wearing the old red uniforms, kind of gesture to the old group, hey, we finally got there.
It is interesting how once the uniforms changed in 1993 the whole history of the franchise turned around.
Does anyone remember, was it Parcells idea to change them when he was hired?

I thought it was the Krafts trying to jump-start merchandising (could be remembering wrong).

Pat Patriot all the way. With the current incarnation of the team of course.

No. The change was made by James Orenthal Bush. Most people assume it was Kraft and/or Parcells but they had nothing to do with it. I can remember the press asking Parcells about the uniform change and his comment was something like "I don't care if they play in gray sweatshirts".

Orenthal was putting the foundation in place to move the franchise to St Louis. He wanted more of a national logo and look before he made his move.

His name was Orthwein.

I can not believe that more than one individual in the history of mankind had the name "Orenthal." Evidently, both were advocates of "cut and run" tactics...

Be that as it may, I agree with Tunescribe, Deb, et al.: Pat Patriot is an example of inept design/branding, akin to the Broncos' cartoon horse (the one with the buck teeth, before the noble steed wrapped around the D.)

As for the static-ness of the image, I can only relate that bleery eyed and watching the news on a 13 inch black and white TV in my room as a kid, I remember perking up when I saw a Houston Oilers clip, if the helmets were visible. From anything more than a couple feet away, Pat Patriot is the basic equivalent of an oil derrick.

I'm an old man too, but put together the losing, the static-ness, the cartooniness, and the inept non-decal execution (you just can't have teeny tiny features on an icon like Pat,) and the old logo can only be so loved out of loyalty and memories. Those are great traits, but Pat Patriot -- loved though he may be -- is just not good design.

It took me about half a season to go "Ya know, those new unis are kind of cool!"

PS -- I like Denver's cyberhorse too. I just hate Denver.

I should also add that Kraft did make several modifications. He changed the home numbers from red to white. He added that subtle soccer style stripe and thankfully got rid of that. Changed the blue from royal to dark (much better). Added, and then got rid of the Toronto Blue Jay style number (kind of an italic font).

It’s evolved into a classic uniform IMHO.

Aaarrrrrgh, the old red and whites in the super bowls? Do you have no superstition that, after being world beaters throughout the season, division and conference championships the Patriots might revert to the old losing ways with those uniforms on? I do. You got to dance with them what brung you man. Leave the reds and whites in here:

I agree ! Besides these new uniforms have already started their own legacy.

Pat Patriot is great. I wish they'd put that logo on the shoulders on the current uni with the Elvis on the helmet.

NOW THAT.....is a good idea! Or perhaps on one side of the chest.

Maybe one of the 'insiders' on this site could pass on the message to Kraft to do it. It would look cool with the new colors, too.

yes - why don't use both ? not bad idea...

so everyone is happy

Good point. New unis = THE Patriots legacy. The rest of Patriots history is about like that of the Oilers or the Chargers. Not horrible, but not great, like this current era.
