Patriots sign DT Marcus Stroud

Re: Schefter: Pats sign Marcus Stroud

That wouldn't necessarily read as an indictment..."Not worth the money" and "not right for our system" don't apply to New England.

I'll take Belichick's word on whether Stroud fits in our system over Buffalo fans. Based on size & strength alone, there's no reason to think Stroud couldn't handle our 2-gap 34 system.

Stroud's play declined throughout the 2008 season, then again in 2009, and then dramatically in 2010, when the Bills switched to a base 3-4 defense.

But he never really was the guy he was supposed to be for us.

just didnt have it for a 3-4 End. Good dude tho.

I always liked him but yeah he just doesn’t fit the scheme anymore.

His skills have left him

His skills, or lack there of, along with that contract were indeed dead weight.

Glad to see him go, but I wish him well.

Stroud was a terrible fit for the 3-4 scheme Chan Gailey has been trying to install. He lacks the speed necessary to be an effective defensive end, and he was mostly invisible last season.

You and I would appear to have a different take on what an indictment is, when it comes to football players.

Re: Schefter: Pats sign Marcus Stroud

He's the 2011 version of Damione Lewis. Here for camp competition and probably little else. The best possible scenario I could see happening for him would be a "rush" interior lineman when they go to some of their 4 man line sub packages.

Re: Schefter: Pats sign Marcus Stroud

I get you now but I'm not the only one who interpreted your post as saying Deaderick's net worth was 7 spots in the 1st round. Brace and Merriweather make more sense b/c of their value and their contributions. More BM than Brace.

I agree with your assesement of Stroud. BB stockpiles players and sorts out the bodies during camp. Some make it (Warren) some don't (Lewis). I like Stroud but I don't think he is a sho-in for significant playing time if Brace, Ty Warren and G. Warren (if he comes back) show the goods in camp. With that said Stroud > G. Warren IMO.

If he is depth, I would guess 10-15 snaps/ four man front package. I really hope this doesn't mean Wright is not coming back.

It seems to me that this will be the year we do move up so the trading partner would need more players in return.

My best guess is Dallas/Washington/Houston would be the most likely trading partner. Arizona would follow.

Washinton and Houston would be the two teams most needy of 3-4 Dline.

Dallas and Arizona would be more Mankins/Merriweather type trades.

To be fair (and as expected), the comments on various Bills forums seem to be much more divided.

Really, I think we should take opinions with a grain of salt. After all, we know what happens to fans on this very forum when it comes to crapping on players on their way out.

I do.

The man missed the last 3 months of the season with the last of his concussions.

I just pray he'll be able to tie his shoes the rest of his life. When one sees a situation like that, it is very concerning on a human level.

Can't imagine why Buffalo fans wouldn't be enthusiastic about their players.

I hope he comes back ONLY if he's fully healthy.

Wright is a personal favorite and I would love it if we could generate pressure with four D line guys.

Good point. I'm sure that it would have nothing to do with talent/play perception. Kyle Williams has never gotten a positive word said about him up in Buffalo.

I've long thought that G. Warren can do better for himself than playing the depth game in NE, and we're likely to lose him as a result.

The big difference is that NE players have every opportunity to succeed. When they dont, its time to hit the road. No whining or excuses. HOF Head Coach and QB. An owner that will spend whatever it takes to win.

Very few NE players have left the Pats and gone on to any kind of success.

this is a low risk move that could pay off nicely for the pats. hopefully the labor situation is resolved, because i don't see him playing past his new contract here.

I think between Ty coming off injury, Gerard not being a guarantee to return, Wright's health, and Deaderick's intangibles, there's plenty of room for D-Linemen to compete for depth and insurance on this squad.

This sums it up for me -- too many uncertainties at the position entering TC.

Lots of film on Stroud -- especially within the division. BB will know how to use him. Terrific signing.

I mentioned elsewhere the Pats may "double dip" due to the draft's depth at the DE position. Now, with Stroud solidifying the run D, we may focus on the one DE w/ pass rush ability who can create some pressure that's desperately needed. This draftee, along with the one DE/OLB w/ some edge rush ability, will address the annual pass rush deficiency. Let's find those two...

Re: Schefter: Pats sign Marcus Stroud

Thats what I thought too.

Wrights salary is 2.165 M for 2011 per Miguel.

i don't think this move effects too much of who we draft regarding DE prospects. I think it's usually what the pats do Pre Draft. Put themselves in a position of not really having a glaring need (some would disagree about OLB) and being able to pick any prospect at any position that they think is the best player.

I agree.

Stroud isnt a long term solution. The Pats usually bring in a bunch of competition and let the best men win the roster spots.

Agree with above statement completely...BB stocking positions of need pre draft....gives him alot more flexibility in drafting BPA rather than reaching...or if nobody on his board that he feels is worth pick #17, he gets to trade out and move around with additional picks......

I don't think that scenario will happen at #17...more like when the Pats pick comes up near end of the round, or at #33.....

With the Mankins- Neal - Kaczu situations , it wouldn't surprise me to see a couple of OL with two of the first three picks.....OT,OLB,C ...in any order.....

Re: Schefter: Pats sign Marcus Stroud

Even more fuel to the we wont go DL early on draft day fire

Good addition IMHO

OT (17th) & OG (28th)?

Re: Schefter: Pats sign Marcus Stroud

OT (17th) & OG (28th)?

With so many strong D-lineman judged to be 1st rd'ers, it wouldn't be the first time BB went
counter-current. Maroney was the first pick of three on offense in a draft loaded with LB's .

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on G.Warren vs Stroud debate. Maybe it's not even a debate at all considering Warren is a DT and Stroud is a DE. Who knows, that's the fun.

It is also interesting we are signing a DL before a draft which has been touted the best ever for DL.

Goodbye G. Warren. Hello Marcus Stroud! Run stuffing 3-4 DE. Gonna be a nice upgrade over Warren. Could help plug the middle as well when the pats run a 4 man front. He's not really a passrushing end like a Seymour though. So we might still try to get a freakazoid 5 tech in this year's draft.
