Asomugha v. Mankins

Why bother? A guard's a guard, after all.

If you let Mankins go, you've got to work two guards into the mix, since you can't rely on Neal's health even if he returns, and Connolly is not the answer. Imagine the money they could save if they'd just go with minimum wage guys!

Of course, the fact that the team's current scheduled payroll is very low for the upcoming season would allow the team to handle franchising Mankins quite easily. But why bother protecting the QB when the team can pay $12-16 million to improve a position that's nowhere near as poorly off as the guard spot?

Some of you people act as if the guard position isn't even worth thinking about. A fan base that watched the interior line get manhandled on a bad day in 2007, and saw the results of that, should know better.

I won't take what you say lightly and of course, since it's not my money - sign 'em BOTH.

That said, I think if there is one thing we as Patriot fanatics have learned to be true this decade, defense wins championships.

We have the best OL coach in the business and with a decent draft and, the return of Light, 1/2 a season from Neal and with Kazcur coming back - we can survive and maybe even get better (draft or FA).

If we can get this guy though, it just strengthens us with a legitimate play maker (imagine what BB could do with him)...........please.......sign Asomugha.

This is my view. Picture Mccourty and Asomugha...BLITZZZZ

I'm guessing people have short memories of how well Bodden played in season 2009/2010.

Precisely.

Much rather go after DeAngelo Williams or Malcom Floyd than break the bank for Asomugha.

Simple realities here.

1.) The O.P. gave us an either/or.

2.) McCourty sure seemed like a CB1, didn't he?

3.) Bodden's fine as a CB2

4.) Without Mankins, and even with the return of Light, you've got:

Mankins
Connolly
Wendell
Ohrnberger

in a 4-way battle for the two guard spots if Neal either retires or becomes injured. Adding a rookie or two into that mix certainly isn't guaranteed to steady the situation. Choosing Mankins is the only way to go on this.

This OG v. Nmadi question would be much more interesting if the rules were that Light and Mankins were returning, and the decision was between Carl Nicks and Nmadi.

He's 30 coming off a season-ending injury. Besides, 3 CBs are on the field alot now because of all the passing.

I'm not sure Bodden will return to that form. Butler/Arrington/Wilhite get picked on when there out there.

I think I'd still go for Nicks, but I'll be damned if that wouldn't be a huge chunk of change to spend on a pair of guards.

He tore his pectoral muscle, it's not like he blew his Achilles.

Regardless, that's why, if they feel it necessary, they can sign a veteran corner rather than signing the guy who is primed to become the highest paid defensive player in the league.

As an aside, how the heck did Asomugha only have 19 tackles last season? That's absurd.

I've heard this alot, even from the analysts. Which team will pay him that insane contract of 14 or 15 million a year if the cap comes back? I think he will get a high contract but not the idiocy the Raiders gave him.

If the Patriots were to (if possible, due to tags and the like):

Re-sign Light
Re-sign/franchise Mankins
Sign Deangelo Williams
Sign Carl Nicks
Draft DE/OLB/Pouncey with the first 3 picks in the draft
Trade up from rounds 3 down to get another 2nd round pick
Draft a speed/deep WR with one of the two remaining 2nd round picks
Draft either a C or another OLB with the remaining 2nd round pick
Trade remaining picks into the next year

I'd have to think that would make the Patriots SB favorites and set them up moving forward.

Asomugha is 30 this year too. I'd like Nnamdi but I'm perfectly at ease with Bodden/McCourty and improving other areas of the side. I've been trumpeting the signing of DeAngelo Williams for a while now. That would be a massive home run hit for the Patriots.

Deus Irae has covered the rest.

That would be an absurd(ly good) offseason.

He's not a speed guy but I like Leonard Hankerson if they're going to scoop a WR in the 2nd round.

That would be great. We have differing opinions on the RB situation but if Williams wouldn't be too expensive I'd like it.

Only question I have is Mankins+Nicks and Pouncey? Is Mike Pouncey a guard or center?

Edit: So he's a guard. Asomugha>Nicks and Deangelo. Draft Pouncey

-Draft a tackle, let Light walk if the price isn't right
-Injury history
-scheme fit?
-Bigger physical WR with speed to be more specific. Ex:Vincent Jackson over Desean Jackson

I'd pass up both of them for a hungry linebacker that can set the edge.

I can't take Asomugha after seeing Randall Gay win two super bowls and Asante Samuels leave for a big contract. New England doesn't buy big name corners; they make them.

According to this article
, it's because QBs just avoided him.

In 13 games, Asomugha has allowed only 10 receptions for 156 yards and no touchdowns on 27 passes thrown his way.

He only had 6 PDs all season, but part of that is because no one threw his way.
