Sanders hit on Ward

No.. Ward was knocked out with a NECK INJURY. If they come back and claim it was a concussion, they were either lying during the game or lying now.. They Steelers staff went out of their way to call it a neck injury several times.

Tomlin already came out and said it was a concussion. It was obvious what was going on. The Steelers report the injury as neck, so they could keep open the possibility of him going back in. If they call it a concussion, he's out of the game immediately. So they manipulated injury rules to keep him eligible, which is exactly what the league is trying to stop. I'm positive nothing will come of it, but it is interesting to note.

Personally, I'd do the same thing.

oh, me to. But I bet if Belichick did it, we'd be hearing all sorts of crap from the media about how he "manipulates" the injury report, etc.

Probably true. What would happen if he pointed his finger at Mangini? Whatever it is would definitely be hilarious.

Unfairly, he'll be fined (I'm betting).

When I say it originally, it looked to me that he was getting pushed into Sanders from behind and while he was going to the ground. It was very minor, but guess it was worse than it looks.

I don't know. I don't see Tomlin willing to risk his job and a giant fine to put Hines Ward back in the game if he suffered a concussion. I think it was all Hines Ward trying to get himself back in the game by saying, "it's only my neck, don't worry about it," every time the doctor tries to check for signs of a concussion.

Either that, or Tomlin is passive-aggressive as !@#$ and decided to call it a concussion only to get Sanders fined (he knocked Hines Ward out and got a pick 6).

With the new concussion guidelines, it would be stupid for a team to prematurely call something a concussion. The smart move is to be absolutely certain before using that label.

The Steelers kept Ward out of the game. That's the important thing.

You know, in earlier times, this board used to attract a much better class of trolls. Nowadays it seems like we only get the the serious jackwagons, the ones with mommy issues and language problems. Sort of the Football Tourrettes' types, as it were.

Where did we go wrong?

We banned all the good ones? (The worst part of the troll situation is all the unintentional Patriot fan trolls.)

Agreed.

The team protected the player from unnecessary further injury.

And the team protected itself from the arbitrary nfl rule in this matter.

I saw no helmet to helmet hit. They brushed together.

You see through patriot glasses. I'm sure steeler fans saw a clear violation. And BTW, is "brushing together" a techical term that excludes the contact precluded by the rule?

Or are you merely saying that this shouldn't be a violation regardless of what the rule says?

I saw no helmet to helmet hit. They brushed together.

Aren't the Steelers players constantly complaining that they can't knock guys out of the game anymore? Isn't Hines Ward the dirtiest player in the league? I thought it was funny that BB challenged the call and won, just to add insult to injury.

So, the Steelers lied yesterday during the game.. Got it.

Hines Ward suffered a concussion | ProFootballTalk

The Steelers initially said Hines Ward was knocked out with a “neck” injury even though it was pretty clear that he was dazed and confused after taking a shot to the head on Sunday night.

After the game, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin admitted that Ward suffered a concussion. (The team likely called it a neck injury at first in case they wanted to bring Ward back in the game.) Ward said after the game he could have returned, but he wasn’t allowed.

It would certainly appear so...

Sanders' hit is a great example of why the helmet-to-helmet stuff is stupid. This game is way to fast. Like Pyror's hit, there was nothing wrong with it. But he'll be fined regardless, just because.

Also: anyone find it funny that Steelers fans are crying about this hit? Talk about irony. They got beat at their own game, knocked the **** out last night.

I'm a Steelers fan. Not crying about the hit. I felt it was incidental.

As to whether he will be fined or not...you might as well flip a coin. Regardless of how you feel about a particular hit here or there in 2010, I think at this point a lot of fans would agree that there's not a small amount of arbitrariness to the new rule, to the point where it feels like they're making the rules up as they go along.

I think the league is concerned most about the hits that *look* the worst and do the most damage, regardless of intent, malice, or even legality. (Case in point: Robinson, who the league basically said couldn't have done anything differently, getting fined the same as Merriweather). That's where Sanders may get into some trouble, even though the hit may have been completely incidental--a guy was knocked out on national television, and helmets were involved, so somebody in the league office will feel the need to do something public.

Honestly I think the league is most concerned about the appearances of being "concerned" about player safety so that they can simultaneously try to extend the season two games in the upcoming CBA, without looking completely hypocritical.

Polian will probably try (and succeed) in getting Sanders chucked...

Not nearly as vicious as the Welker hit from two years ago, but still, delicious karma. On top of the fact that Smiley was the recipient.
