Wide Receiver - scouting the prospects

This is the highest I've seen Eric Decker ranked at #5. Most "experts" put him in the 10-15 area. He had a season ending lizFranc fracture of his foot which can be very serious and potentially career ending, so his injury is a real concern going forward. I can't see him ranked ahead of Gilyard who is also an accomplished KR or several others who only got "honorable mention".

Dez Bryant is a very special talent but Gilyard isn't far behind. Imo, McCluster may be too frail to be a dependable NFL player.

I've been ignoring this one for a while. Some thoughts:

1) I don't agree with the premise that the easiest way to upgrade this team is to provide WR help. The easiest way to improve the Pats is to get off the field on 3rd down. Pass rush, pass rush, and pass rush. That being said, we don't have 3 NFL caliber, healthy WRs on the team now, so we have to get some.

2) In concert with the above, I don't agree that New Orleans won the Super Bowl on the strength of their passing attack, good as it is. New Orleans took that final step up when Gregg Williams came over to run their defense. Holding the Colts to 17 points while scoring 7 of your own wins that game, as well as winning in Minnesota when they had something like a -4 turnover differential.

3) Watching football, I think Benn is clearly the best WR in the NCAA. I thought he was the best in the NCAA last year, and I'd put him up against anybody coming out next year too. However, he's certainly not fail-safe. The offense he played in makes it hard to project how good he can be in a Pro-Style offense. This is where Tate closes the gap. If I were GM, I'd really need to sit down and watch tape with him and work him out before I felt comfortable spending a high pick on him.

4) In concert with the above, let's stop blasting Belichick for drafting Johnson and Jackson in the second round. Johnson was drafted that highly because he was an elite kick-returner, and had extremely high upside. We got 3 or 4 years of fantastic field position when he was returning kicks for us. Belichick didn't misread Jackson's talent. Jackson is talented enough to have started for us last year opposite Moss. Jackson's poor work ethic and lousy attitude is why he can't hold onto a job for very long. He seems to be one of those guys who thinks football owes him something. Several teams, including Pittsburgh, removed him entirely from their board. In all liklihood, Urban Meyer told Belichick those things were overblown, and Jackson aced the film and playbook parts of his interviews. Belichick's mistake was to perhaps see in Jackson what he wanted to see in Jackson, and trusting his pal Meyer.

5) Shawn Jefferson is coaching the Lions' WRs? Good for him. Class guy, and perfect #2 guy when he was here.

6) As for binkies, Andre Roberts and Taylor Price look to be great value on Day 3. I love Gilyard on his return abilities alone, and from a purely on-field assessment, Mike Williams is a top 3 WR in this class. I would take a flyer on him somewhere around round 5 and see if we can't get a steal. If his immaturity flares up, minimal investment lost, but if his attitude problems can be corrected, the bang-for-buck is off the charts.

Wow. You think Benn is better than Green, Jones, Floyd, Baldwin, etc? That's quite the statement. If you're right, then we have to take him in the 2nd, where he's currently projected, because in that case he's a top-ten talent and a serious steal.

Andre Roberts is one of my favorite receivers in this draft. I think he's a Greg Jennings sort of receiver, and would be a great #3 for us from the get go. I'm all for drafting him in the 3rd or even late 2nd.

Well, I think Jones will be better, but I think Benn belongs in that conversation. But again, what Benn does on the field isn't easily translate-able to the NFL. I tend to be wary of "skill" players in non-Pro Style offenses. I think if he stayed another year under Paul Petrino, his draft stock would have improved next year. He was also an elite returner earlier in his Illinois career.

Rotoworld - GT's Demaryius Thomas Breaks Foot

NFL Network's Mike Mayock reports that Georgia Tech WR Demaryius Thomas broke his foot on Monday while training for next week's Scouting Combine and is out 4-6 weeks.
Thomas' agent claims the break was "clean," and his client will be ready for OTAs. The injury is fluky, as Thomas missed just one game in his college career (due to a concussion as a sophomore). A likely top-32 pick, Thomas' stock will take a hit because he may not run for scouts at all before the draft. Like for all big wideouts, there are questions about his long speed.

Tough break for the kid.

Yeah that really sucks, here's a bit more to add..
According to TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline, Demaryius Thomas was running forties in the 4.3 range prior to breaking his foot this week.
Thomas' agent confirmed the injury to Pauline while adding that a pin may need to be inserted into Thomas' foot to quicken his healing. The agent also said Thomas ran a 4.38 at 227 lbs. last week, which would've skyrocketed his stock had Thomas repeated the time in Indianapolis. Thomas' camp videotaped the workout and plans to send the footage to all 32 teams.
Confirmed: Demaryius Thomas Breaks Foot

I think Demaryius Thomas might have as much upside as Benn, even though they are different style receivers.

Terrible news about Thomas. After Roberts and Tate, he's my favorite WR in the draft. I thought he could be a great #3 or #4 for us. I have to wonder if he will be healthy enough to contribute this season, or if he'll be PUP'd and thus behind on practicing and timing. I feel bad for the guy. :(

On the bright side, maybe we can do some bargain shopping now? :rocker:
