Jonathan Stewart: Get er done

I started this thread hoping to get a discussion going about the draft choice it would cost to trade for Stewart. I chose Stewart because he comes as close to a Cory Dillon clone as I've seen in 4 years. The 2004 offense was the most complete offense the Patriots fielded in the last decade, and Dillon was the hammer. A guy that to take the ball, move the sticks, get in the endzone and run out the clock.
As far as Carolina's willingness to trade...most unlikely...but the roster has two feature backs and a limited passing game. Smith is aging, Delhomme is not the future. The team can't continue to pay for Peppers at a $1 mill+ per game. Just as the Patriots may use this uncapped year to shed bad investments...so too may Carolina (Delhomme). With such a deep draft, Carolina may be willing to part with a RB for picks, free up $18 mill from Peppers and hit the FA market to balance out the roster.

But seriously, LenDale White could be available (new CBA contract pending). I can see him more here as a Dillion type. We drafted Maroney to fill the Dillon void and he is not the same type of back. White is. He wants out of Tenn. and won't start ahead of Johnson. He is 26. He had 1,100 years two years ago with 20 receptions.

Is White committed to staying in shape and picking up blitzers? If so I would take a chance on him.

Draft? Crappy years for RB's unless your into scat backs.

Quire frankly after Spiller (not a BB style RB as he is more of a Texans Slaton type, nor does he have Chris Johnson 4.29 speed), there is Toby Gerhert who I would take with my first round two pick. There is NADA after that in RB's worth a high choice. Gerhart starts in 2010 if the Pats draft him IMO. He runs, blocks, catches is smart and has a great looking girl friend.

Really? I would hardly call Jonathan Dwyer and LeGarrett Blount "scat backs". Both could go in the second round Dwyer most likely wont even last untill then. CJ Spiller is not like Slaton, He is a football player who runs track, he could run a mid 4.3 and maybe a high 4.2 forty so yeah he has CJ type speed. Why the hell would you take a poor mans(im talking homeless poor) Brandon Jacobs who IS NOT a threat out of the back field what so ever in the nfl, No back we choose will just come in and start in 2010. Dwyer runs, blocks, catches and is smart as well, would you take him with your first round two pick? I would rather have Tebow who is a better athlete than Toby and hes got a better looking girlfriend. Tebow would bring more to this team than Gerhart. Toby is a short yardage back and thats all he really is.

But is Tebow willing to switch positions. He said he wants to play QB.

I doubt it, I say some team gives him a chance at QB and I think he will suceed but if he doesnt, he loves football so he will do anything a team wants him to do to see the field.

Spiller is like 190lbs, Cousin? The Pats need a between the tackles runner like Dillon. No to Spiller IMO. Blount is a "Gansta"> I don't know about him.

O.K. on Dwyer. Good point. But I am not sold as better or close. The Doak Walker winning Gerhert had 1,800 yards last season on a mediocre Stanford team. He had a 5.5 yards per carry average (short yardage?). Dwyer had a 5.9 YPC (great). Gerhert had 27 TDs and Dwyer had 14TDs. Gerhert also had three times more receptions than Dwyer and 14.3 YPC (can't make recieving plays out of the backfield?). Gerhert is known as a great blocker (see Hiawatha Maroney and the famed "lookout block"). I am pretty sure that Gerhert might score the best Wunderlic of all the RBs....smart.

I agree with Tebow. He has intangibles . If they drafted Edelman and as he admitted, they told him Draft day they did not know where they were going to play him but he was a "football player" according to BB, then let's take a shot with him....also smart.

Barry "dances" too much. I'd rather get Jim Brown.

I want a slasher with break-away speed. There is only one way to go. The Juice!!

p.s. When does he get out of jail?

If you watch Gerhart run, he runs straight up and down. Not one NFL back is succesful running straight up and down. He doesn't have great speed, and he isnt a good cutter. Why not stick with Morris. No way do the Pats spend a second round pick on this guy let alone the first of the seconds. Hes not even slated to go in the second yet. Hes not playing QB, ILB, or Saftey so I really dont care about wonderlic scores. PAC-10 defenses were soft as ussual this year and even softer with SC's decline. The Pats have Zero home run threats out of the backfield and Toby Gerhart is the furthest thing for a homerun threat. CJ Spiller could be the perfect back to complement Morris/Maroney and he would eventually replace an aging Faulk. CJ had 36 catches for 503 yards and 4 tds to Gerharts 11 for 157 for 0 tds. CJ is a good blocker as is Gerhart but is Gerhart really the guy you want on the field on third down. Dwyer actually has legit speed and good hands but GT's offense doesnt showcase that. Both would be values in the second round but they most likely wont make it to the second because of the superior talent. Gerhart is a third round talent right now who might end up being a second round pick because a team might reach on him. LeGarrette Blount would be a steal if he goes after the second. He would have likely been a second round talent before the incident with Boise State. I personally think he has some character issues but he may be worth the risk. Hes a better back than Gerhart and hes the type of Back your looking for along with Dwyer and a few other backs. Gerhart will most likely end up being a fullback somewhere.

We shoud have a sticky for all those players on other teams that we wish played for us and another for every player waived since there will be someone who wants every one of them.

Beg to differ with you on Gerhert. Note:
"Big hard running back who has surprisingly good jump cut ability. Bulls through the line and will not be brought down by arm tackles. Has surprising speed and was able to hit the home run several times on long runs. Trucks over the safeties and corners who try to tackle him. Able to catch the ball smoothly when given a chance." Projected 4.48 40. Wants to do a 4.5. Some have predicted he will wind up being the best RB in the Draft. We don't have a third rounder. Will he last until 4th???Nyet!

The big negative on Dwyer is acceleration. Once he is going, fine. A better choice than Dwyer is Ryan Mathews, Fresno State
"Height: 5-11. Weight: 220.
Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
Projected Round (2010): 3-4.
(1,316 yards, 7.4 YPC, 11 TDs in eight games). You may shrug off the fact that he plays in the WAC, but in three games against Wisconsin, Cincinnati and Boise State, Mathews has rushed for 486 yards and four touchdowns on 76 carries."
He is a match to Maroney is the only issue that scares me. Maroneys real problem is lack of vision, not speed or cuts. If he has vision, fine.

See above about "trucks". Dillon "trucked". And yes I want Gerhert on the field on third down (again see the Maroney' "look out" block). After Faulk our RB's do not block that well. I also say he catches fairly well. Would you take Alstot to most of the backs you mentioned? He is a faster, more nimble Alstot.
I want HEART and TOUGH. I don't know about your other choices.

We need a player like Bettis or Dillon who can close out a game. 3rd and 4 to go, I don't want to have to throw 90% of the time. Let's get a back who can eat the clock.

i think the perfect back for our system is derrick ward. i wonder what Tampa is going to do with him. hes a great RB out of the shotgun.

As long as Fox is here in Carolina will run,run and run more. In his system they need 2 RB's and I do not see them trading one of them.

Stewart is a stud, no doubt, but I can't imagine Carolina trading him. Their running game is the foundation of the team and one of the only things that's not broke, so why would they dismantle it? You need 2 stud RBs in this NFL, anyway.

If we really want a Stewart type back, then go after Jonathan Dwyer.

I'd rather get rid of the system.

Our system worked to perfection in the 2003 and 2004 Super Bowl.

You have a QB with a super quick release and accuracy in a league where defenders are forbidden from touching WRs. You save a ton of money by paying your OL relatively little because the ball comes out long before they can flub their assignments.

Look at Drew Brees tonight. It wouldn't matter if he had Bill Yates and Kenyatta Jones in front of him.

What's being reported down, as far as Delhomme and Peppers?

IF there was no one else available at 22 who I liked (i.e., CJ Spiller, Dan Williams, Carlos Dunlap, Brian Bulaga and possibly Terrance Cody all gone), I would consider offering #22 to Carolina for Jonathan Stewart straight up. Carolina has no 1st round pick. They could use it to address a major need, and then draft a solid RB at 47/48 for depth (Jonathan Dwyer or Ryan Mathews, for example). Stewart has low mileage on his treads (405 carries, 1900+ yards) and is only 23. He would be a solid addition. We could then use 42/44, 47/48 and 53 on a pass-rusher, an OG, and a DE.

Is White committed to staying in shape and picking up blitzers? If so I would take a chance on him.

Another guy to keep tabs on is Mike Bell. He excelled in Denver's zone-blocking scheme. Of course, lots of guys did. He's looked good in New Orleans though, as part of their 3-headed monster. He's UFA, and with Lynell Hamilton finally healthy, I don't think the Saints are going to try too hard to bring him back.
