Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Of course I would be upset"

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

I certainly hope so. There would be no excuses in an uncapped year.

Except, if you franchise him this year, you're not taking advantage of the uncapped year by frontloading the contract. If you think he's part of your future plans, NOW is the year to sign him, precisely because it may be uncapped.

In fact, I always thought the Patriots were pushing guys into this year for precisely this reason. You may also see Brady get a contract extension this season because of the uncapped year. You can frontload contracts this year with big whopping payments.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

If he takes $8M a year with a big signing bonus then he'll stay I expect. If he wants $14M he won't. I love Vince but we can't say "we have to sign him" without knowing what he'll accept.

Think of the horror if your wife said "we have to have this house" without knowing the cost

The problem may be just as you state above. Vince may not

accept defensive tackle money ($8M). He may want defensive

end money ($14M). I'm sure the reason the Patriots traded

Seymour was that they were not willing to pay him $14M.

The reason the Pats traded Richard Seymour was because the Raiders offered a first round pick for the guy. It is likely to be a top ten pick. And there is a possibility that Seymour could be a Patriot in 2010 (although not likely) since the Raiders may have to use their franchise tag on Kirk Morrison rather than Seymour.

I believe Morrison will be an RFA

Well, it depends if there is a cap or not. If there is a new CBA, he is an UFA.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

One thing worth noting is that we don't know very much, if anything, about the exact offers the Patriots were making. More importantly, the CBA has rules regarding new contracts and extensions signed in the last capped year, which limit what the Patriots are allowed to offer Wilfork right now.

I'm not saying that everything is fine and is going to work out perfectly; OTOH, I'm not at all sold that there is an irreconcilable rift, either.

Probably not. The NFLPA would probably have to concede to keeping the 2010 FA rules in place (otherwise there'd be chaos, as you'd suddenly have 200 extra FAs to worry about in the space of a few days), and supposedly that was one of the first concessions the NFLPA was willing to make to increase the likelihood of avoiding an uncapped year.

Highly doubtful at this point. We're less than two months away from free agency.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

Tag him and trade him. Where was he on the 83 yard run?

He wants how much?

Get some other big fat guy to clog the middle, how hard can it be?

Really difficult, actually.

Wilfork

What do you all think about this particular statement from Wilfork after yesterday's game?

"I want to be a Patriot - but that’s not up to me.’’

Since most of us are not privy to the negotiations that have taken place between the Pats and Wilfork, we do not know what has been offered; if anything by the Pats and we do not know what Wilkfork is asking for in terms of years and guaranteed dollars.

Clearly the Pats have the expriring CBA in mind and are aprehensive in doling out a hugh signing bonus w/o potentially no cap, a work stoppage and not knowing what the potential FA salaries are as some teams will be losing the ability to sign players if revenue is not being shared, etc.

Wilfork is an excellent defensive player and the team is better with him than without him. However, I find his statement as slightly disengenuous. I don't want to assume that the Pats low-balled him or offered a deal with unreasonable terms. I also don't want to assume that his demands may seem stratospheric in terms of dollars. I believe if he really wants to be here and make a deal happen that it is also HIS responsibility. I'm from the school that it takes two sides to make a deal happen.

I can appreciate Wilfork's desire to get market value for his perceived worth and perhaps try to make up for the rookie deal he signed. I can also appreciate the Pat's position in perhaps taking the wait-and-see approach.
Thoughts from the board?

I think it means if the money's equal he wants to stay here; if he can get more elsewhere then he's gone. Like most players.

I guess thats what I'm struggling with. I can appreciate a PR spin.Thats fine. But money equal to what? His demands? Haynesworth dollars?

I'm starting to wonder how much the team thinks hes actually worth. We all know how BB assigns value to postion and players...Is Wilfork's self-assesement of his worth that much greater than the actual team's assesement of his worth? Don't know.

What makes the Wilfork situation so interesting to me is that I see the "2 down player" argument about to go up in flames.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

One problem with Wilfork signing is that the franchise tag for DTs is not that high, in the $6 million range, and yet Albert Haynesworth got that huge huge deal. So, Wilfork may be asking for above the franchise tag, and the Patriots probably don't think the market moved that much just because of Haynesworth.

I wonder if the other owners are secretly pissed at Daniel Snyder.

Meaning that the Pat's position is that he is a 2-down player only and other teams believe he is a 3-down player and will play accordingly?

Just want to make sure I follow your reasoning..

My gut tells me he wants b/t/w the two numbers. Wish I knew for sure.

Dont forget the Giant's ownership for that HUGE contract for Eli. Personally, I have thought their own players were upset at that. They certainly played like it ever since it was announced.

lol Why hasn't the thread title been edited yet?? "up course" lol.... sorry, carry on

Well, we've seen all sorts of 1 and 2 man lines out of the team, and that's probably not going to change anytime soon. The result of this is that more of the D-linemen for New England are, as a result, essentially turned into 2 down players. That will set up an inherent conflict with teams willing to PAY Vince as a 3 down player, whether or not he plays 3 downs every time. We've seen what happens to this team when an opponent wants to run against it now that Seymour's gone: Double Wilfork, seal off Warren and cram it down Green's/Wright's throat. Vince knows his worth, and he knows he's a player the opponents need to double team in order to have much of a chance at a running game. The question is whether or not the Patriots will compensate him accordingly, because he's going to get paid one way or another. He may be a 2 down player in New England, but he'll command 3 down money. My comment was aimed at the money, not the number of game snaps.
