Why wouldn't he be upset? He should be upset if he gets franchised. If he's earned an extension, give it to him. If he hasn't, let him get it somewhere else.

This team needs all the big, mean, nasty linemen it can get on both sides of the ball. Sign the man.

As always, it depends what he's willing to take. Whatever, as long as he either plays or gets traded for no less than a #1 pick it's OK.

They may have been better off giving him an extension before the start of this season, which is what they should have done anyway. Without Seymour (and seeing the way the Buffalo game started before the Bills decided that apparently was working too well) it's clear that he's a valuable member of this football team. As we all know good D-linemen are hard to find, so if anything his value likely went up. Should be an interesting offseason.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

We already need a long term replacement for Seymour, a couple of outside linebackers, some mauler type offensive linemen, and playmakers on both sides of the ball. We have enough problems as it is without having to find a replacement nose tackle. I just wonder if Vince is going to price himself out of the market. He's going to be disappointed because theres no way we don't franchise him. You don't just let a pro bowl lineman walk out of here for nothing.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

They don't have too many other players on that defense that I'd want to keep. But then, they did let Seymour go. You can't tell me that Seymour, Vrabel, Bruschi and Harrison would not have played better today than the guys they trotted out there. Vince occupies two blockers but our ILBs still cannot make a tackle.

I agree, although I do feel that we have enough inexperienced rookies on this team (and plenty of draft picks). He's one of the few guys that I really feel they definitely need to find a way to keep, and I thought Seymour's trade likely signalled they were serious about keeping him here. I'd really like to see them come up with a deal that makes sense and get him signed.

    Is it really though??

I mean... At some point, don't we have to keep our proven studs and stop letting them walk for future talent?? brady's window is closing... gotta be in win now mode IMO.

It's not like they have been heavy hitters in the draft as of late. Im all set with trading studs for picks. Time to dish out the bread for Big Vince.

The second we traded Seymour, our leverage with Wilfork went way down. One of many questionable calls by the FO this past offseason.

Maybe Ive been to hard on Vince but honestly sometimes our backers weren't free to make a tackle other times they missed like Mayo.

The guy is one of the top 3 in the NFL at his position - his salary should reflect that.

If he takes $8M a year with a big signing bonus then he'll stay I expect. If he wants $14M he won't. I love Vince but we can't say "we have to sign him" without knowing what he'll accept.

Think of the horror if your wife said "we have to have this house" without knowing the cost

One of your questionable calls by the FO, pal this goes back to Dion Branch. THE OWNERS ARE CHEAP THEY ARE TRYING TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THE CHEAP AND IT HAS NOW CAUGHT UP TO THEM. If I hear the word value one more time I'm going to puke.

I'm not sure I agree as he's a non factor on passing downs. Again, I love Vince but he's mostly a guy who contributes on run downs.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

    Wecome to the forum :)

The tough part is if you really look at it, if you're going to let him walk, you have to decide what you're going to do to replace him. As it stands right now they've already seen what life would be like when he was out (the Buffalo game - which the Bills coaching staff more or less blew the game for Buffalo) and there is no viable option. We're good with draft choices, what they need is experience at this point.

My feeling is that Belichick has to be reaching a point where he knows he's not going to do this for another decade, and I'm sure he knows he's got probably 5 or so good years left in Brady. So needless to say I'm sure he wants to put together at least a few more seasons where they have a real shot so he can get them back to where they have the blend of players they had in '01, '03, '04, etc. Another draft pick means developing yet another player, and I'm sure Belichick would love to get back to the days where he could come up with the type of schemes that require smart experienced veterans to implement. People complained about that this season, but don't realize that you need guys who can implement what you're trying to do, and he did the best he could with what they had. We saw tremendous growth in other areas (the secondary), and I'm sure he'd rather build on that than have to start over again up front. Good run-stopping d-linemen are tough to find, and as we've seen Wilfork has excelled in that role.

I don't think you let him walk at all without a real answer, and I really think if they can find a way to make it happen they will.

Remember, the sides talked in the offseason and you saw the result.

I think we have two possibilities :

    1) Franchise and trade for something like a #1 (kind of like Branch though he left a year earlier than being Franchised).

    2) Franchised and doesn't hold out with the promise of not being Franchised again (like Samuel).

We won't let him walk this offseason and I think he's looking for too much money to sign.

    Your choice, 1 or 2.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

The leverage didn't go away. The franchise tag is a great leverage tool. The fact that there might not be a 2011 season and playing under the franchise tag in 2010 and being unemployed in 2011 and hitting 30 in 2012 is another big leverage tool.

Short term the Seymour trade was bad, but long term it was a great deal. In fact, Seymour could even be a Patriot come 2010 since the Raiders need to consider between franchising Seymour or Kirk Morrison and Morrison is the better move.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

Of course Wilfork will not be happy if he gets franchised. What player is happy about it? The Pats hold the leverage here if they franchise him if there is no new CBA. Without a long term deal and a work stoppage in 2011, Wilfork may never cash in.
