So what do you think of Hoyer?

From what I saw, the Texans believed that with an "inexperienced" QB in there, we would rely too much on the run game so they went with overpursing, e.g., getting people into the backfield as quick as possible. That is why I loved that fake handoff misdirection they ran only once. Texans bite on it so hard, Hoyer was able to jog for the first down.

Good, then it was not a Hoyer problem.

Hoyer has better arm strength than Cassel, you can see that. Not sure if he could lead us to 11 wins like Matt did, but hopefully he'll never have to.

Typical BB quarterback signing. He has certainly shown more than O'C did.

And yeah, in the offseason, I didn't think that had a chance of happening.

He looked pretty much like Cassel did at the end of the 2005 season playing Miami, maybe a little sharper for having taken #1 reps several times in recent weeks.

So many people forget Cassel was a two point conversion away from tying that game up, a game he played pretty much the whole thing.

I have to emphatically disagree here. Hoyer has no hesitation. Cassel had a lot of hesitation in his game. There is a world of difference between the two.

I like what I saw in Hoyer. Solid backup.

Thought he was better than expected... wish he would get a helmet that fit.

I'm glad everyone has been able to recognize that Hoyer is better than Cassel in his limited work. Hell, I was so impressed with him that I think he's better than Brady. Give me Hoyer over Manning any day of the week.

You mean Eli, right?:singing:

Yep, I was very impressed. The guys on commentary mentioned how he is very highly regarded by BB, Brady and O'Brien

A UDFA steal (again)

I thought he looked pretty sharp. I like this guy. I thought he was going to score a TD and I was hoping for a 2 point conversion.

If he's the best then let's trade him for the #34th pick in the draft ASAP.

as opposed to what? giving your backup a 50M contract with 30M guaranteed? or do you keep him for one more year and let him walk for nothing?

hoyer has the tools........and he'll be around for a few years....for real short money to boot

I have heard from some of the players who catches balls from Hoyer and they say when you catch a ball from him, you go and shake your hands from pain because he cracks them in with force.
As a matter of fact, Chris Baker intimated Hoyer too much arms strength when he was asked to compared the difference in receiving passes from Hoyer and Brady. He even said Hoyer needs to learn how make softer throws. lol

The biggest issue Hoyer had in his senior season at MSU was dropped balls. The amount was incredible......Touch might be an issue to resolve.

Then you're not remembering in context of 2005 vs. being elevated to starter in 2008. It would be interesting to make note of how many of you turn on this kid if he looks like crap in the next couple of preseasons...

He exhibits a very similar skillset to Cassel, poise even in the face of pressure and some mistakes, some nice athletic ability that he will have to guard against leaning on too heavily as his development progresses but it's nice to have in Tom's backup in a pinch, seems to read defenses well and is fairly accurate (which will improve with time if he in fact continues to develop within the system). Measurables wise he's a little short compared to Cassel and Brady, but if he has the intangibles that can be compensated for.

Apparently Bill has had his eye on this kid since his HS days. He made a very different choice than Brady and Cassel, who opted to compete for starting jobs at elite schools, in going with the college that would allow him to start - although apparently he was recruited by some of the big guns. Not sure what if anything that says about his competitive fire. He definitely gives off more of a Brady-Cassel vibe than Gutierrez or KOC ever did. Both of them exhibited a little of the gunslinger mentality which made them, and particularly KOC, puzzling choices here. Neither seemed to outgrow it either and I think that would always represent an achilles heal in this system.

I only saw a snipet of his presser but he seemed to be relaxed and poised/adept at handling the media. KOC always looked too excitable kinda like Sanchize.

Hoyer.
Did not make obviously bad decisions.
Good athleticism.
Strong enough arm.
Ran the standard Pats offense. A big deal. Not having to drasticly change the O for the backup is key.
I think he needs work experience recognizing blitz and other schemes, but that's only to be expected.

Personally I'm somewhat astounded that a rook could look this poised. Obviously BB did something right this season. (Although as BB would say, if we knew he'd be that good we woulda drafted him)

He apparently had multiple UDFA offers but he wanted to come here even with Brady onboard and KOC apparently in line as #2...I think that will be the residual benefit of the Matt Cassel experience. Gives Bill a good opportunity to mine some value trading chips at the postion going forward which was something he always wanted to position himself to be able to do.

Yes, the Cassel experience has to be an indicator to a young intelligent QB without draft hype that the Pats offer a superior developmental program, one that graduates make a lot of cash upon completion.

What puzzels me is the KOC debacle. BB sure cut the cord on that one fast. Understandably I guess after watching year 2 KOC run around clueless on the field. Must have demonstrated little willingness or lots of inability to study and learn. Heard he was a Josh McD lobby pick. Interesting backstory we'll never know here.

Good points. He also looked pretty mobile and could present different looks moving the pocket.
