disagree. the coach is an authority figure with the players' ability to fight back potentially limited by intimidation and fear of retaliation, among other factors. when players fight it's a case of two equals where the exogenous cost to each side is the same, beyond whatever damage they suffer in the fight.

What does this have to do with it being handled 'in house'? As we saw with the Romanowski incident, individuals still can take things to the police if they feel it was severe enough to warrant such actions.

the league has an inherent interest and obligation to be sure that its Coaches aren't using their position in inappropriate ways...physical assault on players who depend on the coach for their livelihood is inappropriate.

Agreed. I hope the assistant sues the living cr@p outta the Coach, and that he files an assault charge with the police. There is NO excuse for that sort of thing.

having said that, leave it to the Raiders to try and put the FUN back in DYSFUNCTIONAL!

If he did break his jaw, does anybody know if Hansen has his jaw wired shut?? That would give a little bit more credibility to the story.....
The hospital notified the police because emergency room visits that look like assault are required to be reported (at least if CA) if they look like an assault. Also, I heard, but have not verified, that breaking a bone during an assault in CA constitutes a felony.

At any rate, Goodell has said many times that he doesn't have to follow the legal system, that he holds players to a higher standard and that their conduct must not reflect badly on the league. The question now is: is this just for players or does it include staff and management? Because this does reflect badly on the league.

Imagine the media frenzie if it was BB who broke a coaches jaw. Goodells punishment would have been very severe. This is a rare advantage to being a Raide remployee. Crap like this is expected and pretty much flies under the media radar.

I'd quibble that the Raiders have reflected badly on the league for several years now, but otherwise I agree. :) The league can't have coaches assaulting players whose careers are in their hands. If two players fight in the heat of a camp or season, then that might not be ideal, but the player isn't constrained or intimidated by the idea that he has to defend himself by tangling with the guy who can cut him or limit his playing time.

Didn't the league suspend that guy who punched Ken Luccas a few years ago? I can't recall his name, but I remember it was an NFL suspension, not a team one.

Steve Smith, 2 games, but it might have been a team suspension.

NFL to investigate alleged fight between Raiders coaches

NAPA, Calif. — Tom Cable went on the defensive Tuesday and the NFL said it would investigate reports that the Oakland Raiders coach got into a fight that sent one of his assistants to the hospital.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league is looking into the situation to try to determine the facts of what happened.

Wow. Just wow....

Cable to Hanson: 'I am going to kill you'

An attorney representing injured Oakland Raiders assistant coach Randy Hanson will turn over medical records at the request of the Napa, Calif., police on Friday that show Hanson's jaw is broken, multiple sources told the National Football Post. In the meeting among coaches that included Tom Cable, defensive coordinator John Marshall, defensive backs coach Lionel Washington and assistant defensive backs coach Willie Brown, Cable allegedly came at Hanson from behind as he was verbally contesting what Marshall had said. "Cable said, 'I am going to kill you, I am going to kill you,' as he was choking him," according to the source, who also said furniture in the room was damaged. The source said that Hanson did not cooperate with law enforcement from the start because it was his hope the matter would be resolved and he could return to his role as a coach. The source said Hanson's lifelong goal was to work for the Raiders, leading him to leave a position he held in St. Louis for Oakland. Now that Al Davis and Cable have made it clear that will not happen, Hanson has decided to follow the request of police and aid in their investigation. A civil suit is a probability, a source said.

Like I commented earlier: leave it to Oakland to put the FUN back in dysFUNctional! :singing:

Al davis has got to be living in lala land. points to rememdy this situation
1. Al davis- hands off the team.. Sign the paychecks and stay out of the way
2. Higher a proven GM to run the team
3. Higher a proven coach that can hire and fire anyone he wants..(no snitches) possible coaches- denny green, Id say mike shannahan but there no way in hell hes going back there- Bill Parcells if you could get him out of miami- Bill Cowher.

Very simple...

any thoughts

When this story first came out earlier this week, the reports were conflicting. Some sources said Cable punched Hanson, others said Cable flipped over a chair Hanson was in, causing him to hit his jaw on a desk or filing cabinet or something. But... either way, not the healthiest way to handle a conflict. There were also some reports that Cable did what he did because Hanson was arguing with another coach and used profanity. (Foul language on a football team? What has this world come to?!)

Reminds me, a couple years ago some reporter said he felt like some Raiders employees were threatening him at a press conference, and the whole thing was caught on tape. Anyone else remember that?

If only...

That's been the solution for years. But I read an article recently (forget where) chronicling the fact that once, in his heyday, Davis was as sharp as they came. He had the Midas touch. That time is gone. Now is the time of the owner who just makes everyone comfortable (chefs, nice lockers,...) and gets out of the way of the football people à la Kraft.

I agree about what he did during his heyday. Saw a bio on al davis about his time in the 70s and 80s. He was ahead of the curve in every way. Unfortunately for him, football is a moving dynamic. every year new philosophies are installed. for example the west coast offence, the 3-4 defence. However Al Davis is living in the past and wants to use the game philosophies of the 70s and 80s (throw deep)..Plus hes the type of owner that wants control of plays at times which undermines the off/def coordinators plan. The last best coach he had was John Grudden. Now i dont know what happened behind the scenes but it seems to me John was run out of town. Thats just speculation. Raiders havent been the same since. Bottom line, until al davis gives up cotrol of drafting/gm/coaching the raiders will be bottom feeders for years to come....

Very simple? You tell me how it is "very simple" to convince Cowher or Parcells to go to the Raiders. Shannahan? You realize that Davis did not pay Shannahan the remainder of his contract after he was fired, right? You got a meddling owner who will not honor a contract. It is not only NOT "very simple" to get a good, proven head coach, it is damn near impossible.

I believe the key is to follow #1 first! Once you do that, you might be able to attract a number of good coaches to the organization.
