Re: WBCN axes rock format - going to all sports (on 98.5 as WBZ-FM) to compete with W

This is awesome. I'll swap between D&C, and WBZ in the morning, listen to Holley midday, and then flash EEI the finger and listen to Felger in the afternoon, since The Big O Show blows.

Re: WBCN axes rock format - going to all sports (on 98.5 as WBZ-FM) to compete with W

Casale is in Vegas...

I was joking. After his column when he started that that web gambling site, no one in Boston is going to give that guy the time of day. Tommy Rider's..... um, Tom Casale's days as a New England media person have long gone. The guy was a nutcase.

Re: WBCN axes rock format - going to all sports to compete with WEEI

Nice. I hope this kills the EEI morning show.

I agree with this 100%. I don't really care what their political views are and it's irrelevant whether I agree with them or not. I tune into sports radio for, I don't know.... SPORTS talk?! If I want political talk radio, there are plenty of other places to find it.

As far as the other shows- the new station better have something spectacular to make me turn the dial from Michael Holly- I think he's very good. The Big show sounds like a bunch of guys bantering at the local bar right after work, and Planet Mikey- I don't mind overall, but he does get caught up on the Manny stuff WAY too often. At least he sounds like he's actually enjoying what he's doing.

Re: WBCN axes rock format - going to all sports (on 98.5 as WBZ-FM) to compete with W

Felger's a disaster waiting to happen. If the new station wants to lose the Patriots right out of the bat, signing Felger for the afternoon drive is the perfect way to do it. As for Tanquay, well, just color me unimpressed. They'd be better off getting Boomer's show simulcast out of New York and moving Toucher and Rich to the late morning/early afternoon slot.

Of course, that's just my personal take on that group of 'talent'.

As someone on the whiner line, having Felger is the radio equivilent of Ted McGinley starring on a sitcom.

Or to use another sitcom reference, WBZ has jumped the shark before the station even goes on the air.

WBZ-FM---losers already

I was excited a bit about this yesterday...BUT...as the details come out..NOT excited at all....SOS...nothing new...AND there could have been..BUT??? When one makes stupid decisions like they have..I hope they float into the ocean.
The AM show..more frat talk..is NOT what I want to hear..better than D&C, but..a bunch of farting horses could be better...I will stay elsewhere off that dial..to M&M..the only ESPN guys that I can remotely stand OR others.
Tanguay is not all that good..Dale and Holley was the one show I would listen to, Holley is great..Dale is there..not bad..but still a whole lot better than GaryT.
The real disappointment comes with Felger being hired. Mr Opportunist shoves his mouth into this one..and as far as I am concerned, BZ strikes out with this big time. Smug, arrogant Felger only wishes to stir up the poy..baiting people with his nonsense..and BS..this cheesehaed turd is just that. If BZ wants to win ratings get someone with substance NOT a**** Felger. I will take the Big SHow anyday over that fraud.
It would have been nice to have competition but Contining BS doesn't know any better..putting retreads into the fray instead of something REALLY good.

Re: WBCN axes rock format - going to all sports (on 98.5 as WBZ-FM) to compete with W

This is disappointing for me too. I'll give it a chance, but I'm definately going into this with a biased, (against), opinion.

Interesting that just 2 days after he's subbing for Dennis & Callahan and drawing a paycheck from WEEI he's announcing that he's going to go over to a rival radio station trying to take rating points away from EEI.

Though it doesn't seem like anyone in the radio business cares either way about stuff like that - Felger seems to get invited back to WEEI regardless of what stations he's worked on in the past.

Re: WBCN axes rock format - going to all sports (on 98.5 as WBZ-FM) to compete with W

So ... let me get this straight.

WBZ just signed the "flea that resides on the anus of a rat" to compete with WEEI?

Is that right?

Re: WBCN axes rock format - going to all sports (on 98.5 as WBZ-FM) to compete with W

Say what you will about Felger, but I am just happy that WBZ has added a guy who doesn't think good Patriots talk on Tuesday-Thursday in Septemeber is pondering the RED SOX's pitching rotation in the playoffs in October. I agree with BSMW that when Felger first started his 890 show, it was excellent. It was the best Patriots talk in town. It went down a bit when Felger adopted the Borges Jr. persona, but it was still better than most Patriots talk on WEEI.

Hopefully Felger won't feel the pressure to be controversial to get exposure for his show and sticks to discussing football where he is actually one of the most knowledgeable guys on the radio in that area. Prior to his Borges Jr. turn he was as popular in this town as Mike Reiss especially when he would spank Borges and Cafardo on their anti-Belichick and anti-Brady rants on Sports Final back in 2001 and 2002. Borges Jr. didn't rear his head until about 2006.

I think as long as Felger keeps his contrarian act in check a bit, I think his show will still have much better Patriots talk than WEEI. If you want Red Sox talk, you should stick with WEEI. But I have always thought that WEEI's Patriots talk is lacking other than some segments (talking with Belichick) and sporatic occassions. The Big Show is more interested in putting the "Sign Culpepper" callers on just to ridicule them rather than actually talk real football.

I admit I don't have much exposure to Tanguay other than WBCN pre and post game shows where he is the moderator of a panel of hosts, but he does ok in that format. I guess if he isn't going to have a panel ala the Big Show, I guess I can see a problem there.

As for Toucher and Rich, I would rather have a sports show mixed in with some Howard Stern type of low brow humor and scantily clad women than D&C's mix of sports and politics. If I want politics in the morning, I'd listen to WRKO or the dozen political channels I have on Sirius.

I guess I have been so turned off by WEEI in recent years that I will welcome any alternative. I think WEEI has always been a Red Sox radio station (more so than I think this is a Red Sox town) and even know resists talking about other sports even Patriots while the season is going. I would rather have Felger who can be annoying at time, but can talk football than a lot of other guys who kiss the Patriots' arses all the time but can't talk real football for the life of them. I personally think guys like Pete Sheppard and Fred Smerlas who defend the Pats to the point of ridiculousness more annoying than guys like Borges and Felger. But I guess that is just me.

Re: WBCN axes rock format - going to all sports (on 98.5 as WBZ-FM) to compete with W

Toucher and Rich said this morning that there will be "20 hours of sports talk, 4 hours of guy radio," and said most of their show (besides the music) will stay the same. So not necessarily all sports in the morning...

Well, that kinda sucks since I want a local sports alternative to D&C during the football season. I only listen them during the Quartback hour (Boomer and Brady and now Boomer is on the Big Show) and when Adam Schefter is on. Otherwise, I find them insufferable. Someone needs to take Meterparel out in back of the building and put him out of his misery. His contrarian act is lame since he can't sell that he is arguing an opinion he doesn't believe and makes outlandish statements to sell it.

Re: WBCN axes rock format - going to all sports (on 98.5 as WBZ-FM) to compete with W

Great Moments in Toucher and Rich History #6,352: In order to point out how lame The Big Show is, Rich takes the best of the Whiner Line to a local comedy club open mic night and reads the completely unfunny lines to the crowd. Deafening silence ensues.

They have already trained their guns on EEI, much like they did to The Hillqueer Show when they first came to Boston. I can't wait to hear them dismantle those lame shows with precision. The greatest show in Boston radio continues.

It's an urban myth that Felger actually knows more about football. It only appears that way to the gullible when he is not paired with someone who does. Guys like DeOssie (or any articulate current or former player) or Holley routinely expose that fraud with ease. And it's wishful thinking that he can contain his contrarian alter ego. Because it doesn't just emerge for ratings, it's his defense mechanism against exposure. Appealing to a loyal demographic that desperately wants to believe that it knows more about the subject than the guys whose rumps all the non critical, unobjective homers want to swab. They think Felger's mere existence validates their beliefs.

And for the record, Borges, Jr. emerged the day Patriots Reign hit the bookstands. Having failed to get ahead via the civil approach, the new and edgy Felger debuted on...WEEI where he honed his new, broader sports radio craft by first tearing Pedro and the Red Sox a new one. So don't kid yourself he won't talk baseball, or basketball or hockey. Or that he won't largely remain contrarian. This isn't 2001 or 2003 anymore. Felger has evolved and there will be no looking back.

I hope Sara's got some job security at Fox. WEEI bailed Felger's ass when he bombed the last time. I doubt they'd bring him back again. It will also be interesting to see how much faith Felger has in himself and his latest employer. If he remains on Comcast nightly, as I'm sure Tanguay will, he will again be spread too thin to actually bring anything beyond rehashed insight to the fray. And this time around he won't have his buddy Tomase feeding him even that. And he's yet to re establish any kind of personal access in Foxboro beyond the PFW crew. Players know he's a baitor and can't be trusted, and that is the access kiss of death when covering a Belichick coached team.

I agree when Felger started out, his show was really good..BUT...it sunk deep when he showed what a contrarian he was amd when it was ALL about his viewpoint rather than talking football. And actually I'd take talk here there on football with DOssie and others on EEI than smug arrogant talk from Felger. To me it's a loss for teh new station having Felger.
Hopefully Felger won't feel the pressure to be controversial to get exposure for his show and sticks to discussing football where he is actually one of the most knowledgeable guys on the radio in that area. Knowledgeable?? No...I do not believe he has a lot of knowledge..if he has some it never shows..once in awhile he makes a good point and like a blind squirrel..once in awhile he finds nuts.. Maybe in those days long ago he was starting to be as popular as Reiss..BUT Reiss has him beat by light years now.

I think as long as Felger keeps his contrarian act in check a bit, I think his show will still have much better Patriots talk than WEEI. If you want Red Sox talk, you should stick with WEEI. With Felger you get smugness and arrogance and HIS contrarian viewpoint on everything. I find it rather stale and will never listen to him all that much. I remember before when he was up against teh Big SHow and listening just up until he said something dumb, untrue or totally outrageous,,and then turning the dial. Sometimes 20 minutes..sometimes 45..BUT I could not listen to him all teh time. Since then he has gotten worse..I'll take EEI over him...even though I wish there was a REAL alternative.

I admit I don't have much exposure to Tanguay other than WBCN pre and post game shows where he is the moderator of a panel of hosts, but he does ok in that format. I guess if he isn't going to have a panel ala the Big Show, I guess I can see a problem there.

Tanguay and these other two seem like lightweights..I'll take Mike and Mike or another sports alternative to both of these...really if they think these retreads are what will make people listen...I really doubt that will happen..

Take Felger and Borges any day..one can write while the other in my opinion is a waste..

First, to be more knowledgeable than most of guys on WEEI, you have to know the difference between the 3-4 and the 4-3. Very few of the guys on WEEI know a lot about football. Holley knows the most with the regulars. Sometimes I wonder if D&C know anything at all. I'm unsure about Pete Sheppard because the next time he says something intelligent, it will be his first. Big O knows a decent amount and so does Dale. As for the guests hosts, all the non-football guys are painful to listen to about football.

As for his contrarian alter ego, it can be contained since he was one of the biggest Patriots cheerleaders prior to 2006. You are wrong when he started to become a contrarian. It started when Borges started to come on his 890 show and the phone calls exploded every time he was one and then he disapeared from the show when he got in trouble for his plagiarism article. That is when Borges Jr. really came in. Felger realized that people loved to hate Borges and Borges was more successful because of it.

As for Felger bombing, it wasn't exactly all his fault. If you lived outside of Boston, you couldn't get his show after 4:30 in winter because the signal was so weak that it wouldn't go far after dark. Kinda hard to be successful when your audience can't get the radio station. I doubt he will have to worry for a while because even if he isn't successful, WBZ has the money to keep him around in the role he served at WEEI.

All D&C know is how to bash democrats. Seriously, sometimes I think I am listening to Rush Limbaugh when they're on. I've sat through 40 minute commutes and not heard sports mentioned once on their show. Total tripe, and they are such self righteous blowhards with irritating voices. I hate 'em.

I think the Big Show crowd is relatively knowledgable of football matters, but they are too busy being homers to really objectively explain what is going on with the team, and I question their knowledge of the league outside of their own team.

I guess I can put up with Felger's personality to get real football talk. I find the baffoonery of Pete Sheppard and Fred Smerlas (at least when he slips into his PomPom mink wearing character and his "the Bills suck when I am on WEEI and they are great when I am on my Buffalo station"). I find that more insufferable because just because you are an idiot who is a die-hard Patriots lover, doesn't stop you from being an idiot. The fact that Big O and DeOssie pander to their stupidity makes it even worse. The fact that both Pete and Fred are blowhards who love the sound of their own voice and speak over people. Sheppard's is an embarrassment with his 3 minute rambling interview questions where he answers the question himself when posing questions to Belichick. I don't how that is any better than Felger and his contrarian view.

Well..you are correct about some of the EEI crew...D&C..are pitiful..I don't listen to them nor do I think they know much. Arnold/Big O know more, but Holley is quite smart and maybe the best local. But when they talk football on the Big Show..they also have DeOssie, Perillo, Curran and others and they are miles ahead of Mr Borges Jr..

Maybe I am wrong about when he became what he is now, but THAT is all that people have seen out of him for the last years..what he has evolved to. And it seems that is what he will be projecting and one of the reasons I will not be listening to him. Sorry..I don't like his schtick at all.

Maybe so....but time will tell about what happens with him and BZ-FM. I am greatly disappointed that they chose this path..retreads..and Felger in particular.Yuk!!!

The problem is that DeOssie, Perillo, and Curran aren't on all week. Tuesday through Thursday usually have baseball guys until November or even December. Sean McAdam is a very knowledgeable guy when it comes to baseball, but he is clueless about football. Big O is not good enough to generate good football talk without one of the football guys around and lets Pete chime in too much then.

As for Felger, when he has done some guest hosting on WEEI, he has toned down the act quite a bit. When he is just a guest, he adopts the personality more to contradict the Patriots rump swabs on the panel.

As for BZ, other than going outside the Boston area, who could they get? I wouldn't have minded Zolak getting his own show or a cohost (since he does have hosting experience), but I think he is still under contract with WEEI to be in the rotation. He could end up getting paired with with Felger or Tanguay at some point when his contract is up. I am sure Dan Burton couldn't do a show as a regular host and TV and the same with Dan Roache. Butch Stearns is with Fox which probably precludes him and I don't know if he is an upgrade. All the weekend guys on WEEI suck. They could have pulled Eddie Andelman and his turkey gobbles off of mothballs. Andy Gresh is on Mad Dog Radio (although he was fired and rehired along with all the rest of the on air personality on that channel) and I find him annoying. Ryan Russiello just took a job with ESPN radio and I doubt he would want to go back local now that he is the 7-midnight guy on ESPN. Seriously, who could they have added? Name a name.

Felger morphed into an unhappy prick the day Holley's book came out. That was right after the 2003 season ended and we won XXXVIII. He has never gotten over that. While he was dutifully penning Tales From the Sidelines or whatever it was that never sold, Holley landed a bestseller that landed him the prime gig as Dale's sidekick on the #1 rated sports station in the country...

That was when Felger perceived the handwriting on the wall. He needed to get into a new line of work before his old line closed down under him. So he began appearing on WEEI not as a football guest analyst but as a fill in and weekend co host. Until the weekend when while co hosting with Pete he went off on Pedro (who as it turnes out was missing a start against the Yankees because he'd been hospitalized all day) and the Sox that got him temporarily placed in time out. But it was worth it because that noteriety alone landed him a gig on FSNE and eventually the ESPN radio gig. Which he began blowing even at the outset because in attempting to become a multi-mediot to rival Big O he was spread so thin he lost contact with the team. He had no time to be at Gillette so he relied on Herald eyes and ears or ESPN's or his contrarian buddies at PFW or just created his own uninformed insight off the cuff. Couldn't even finish his own radio show most days because he was racing to the FSNE studio. He left his frat boys to cover that last hour.

He also began alienating players by baiting them into saying things he could twist on air. Got the punter in enough trouble he stopped showing up. When Kraft did the deal with ESPN to allow for Patriots Friday, BB countered by sending Felger the kind of guys who couldn't be baited. Towards the end they nearly came to blows. Nobody trusts him nowadays because they can smell his desperation to succeed. They don't begrudge him, but they aren't gonna let him screw them in his quest. In 2002-2003 he and Brady were friendly enough to share rides. After he repeated something Brady told him off the record on WEEI (where he was increasingly feeling the pressure to prove he knew things to seperate himself from their other mediocre talents) Brady stopped talking to him too. Ditto BB who back in the day treated him as he does Reiss these days. Bill is always willing to talk football with those who are genuinely interested and aren't looking to stab him in the back to get ahead. Which is also why Holley remains an insider. Holley is able to convince people he knows things without violating trusts. Felger lacks that self confidence.

Sports radio is never going to be all about football. If you believe that is what WBZ has in store for you just because Felger is coming aboard then you apparently missed much of his former and present gigs. Felger will talk whatever sells, including smack. He's not in this to be perceived as intelligent or worthwhile, he's in it to get ahead any way he can. He lacks Holley's temperment and polish and timing, so he resorts to frat boy humor and smash mouth analysis to cover for his shortcomings and fill airtime. If I thought he had the capacity to take a step back and work on his new craft I'd welcome a more well developed version of the 2001 Felger to radio. But he has shown no such inclination. If anything nowadays when reigned in, say by pairing him with Holley, he projects as dour and constrained. When left to his own devices he reverts to juvennile or hypercritical form.

Lately WEEI has made a move away from all but a handful of the better known mediots. Guys like LJ or Burt barely get any airtime. Guys like Dauber and Lou were brought aboard to talk baseball and they've reduced the number of Buckley stolls down your grandfather's memory lane or McAdam monotones fans have to endure. Merloni in particular, can more than hold there own talking football. Max is both hillarious and insightful on Celtics talk. The new entity should take that page out of WEEI's playbook. Even DeOssie, if seperated from Fred and steered clear of politics, could be a very legit, insightful and well connected football oriented co host. The day of the reporter turned insightful analyst is waning. The new generation of players in all sports is ripe to be mined. It's a little early for the Patriots since former players of value are still either employed or lack the necessary polish or temperement. Tedy would be a hoot. Troy would still need a strong supporting cast. Zolak has his moments but it's like he's been overcoached to be an entertainer. Burton and Roach are gonna struggle with All Access because they're conditioned to either anchor or break news. And for all his pedigree, Burton is a far better anchor than analyst.

Sports talk radio can be funny and insightful. Sometimes WEEI is. Nothing is ever going to be perfect. WBZ doesn't sound like they're positioning themselves to remotely raise the bar. It can be done, just not with the kind of tight assed and equaly annoying attitude McDonough's egocentric son brought to the mix. Remy saved his ass on Sox broadcasts. Absent that he was borderline insufferable on 1510. The bar can also be lowered, and that is what Felger ultimately did the last time someone gave him the keys to a radio studio.

In the present economy, given the dearth of advertising dollars, I just don't see another sports radio station as being a sound long term investment, let alone when you're stocking it with a bunch of failed retreads.
