John Clayton: Pats Talking with Raiders About Derrick Burgess

Comp picks are only awarded if a team loses more eligible FAs than it signs--there is no guarantee that the Raiders will get compensated if they lose Burgess (and probably wouldn't since they are a lower-tier team talentwise). A bird in the hand is worth a lot more than one in the bush, in this case.

On the flip side, it is highly likely that the Patriots will be losing more eligible FAs than they sign in 2010, meaning that they'd probably get a comp pick back from Burgess (if he weren't to extend). This may make the one-year rental option more palatable to the Patriots.

that's some good thinking --- thx for the info.

that talk of a second rounder seems way high, and I liked the deal better when I thought he was only 2m, but he could be a good addition even if it's just on 3rd and long, as that seems to be what everybody's worried about.
3.5m and a 2nd/3rd seems pretty steep for a 3rd and long guy, though.

I'm always "amused" when people are "bemused". Just to be sure you're not "confused" by my comment, let me attempt to "defuse" the situation by saying I agree with you on Redd (all he has shown is that he has nice size).

May I say that was very effusive.

The Byrds sang, "...To every purpose there is a Season..."

That's actually a verse from the Bible. Ecclesiastes Chapter 3.

Just giving credit where credit is actually due.

Yes I know that is the original source. I am glad you informed others.

or would we be putting him on the dline

He woudln't count 3.5 million towards the cap. According to the NFL PA on nflpa.org, his salary for 2009 is $2 million. That is all he would count for the Patriots. The bonus portion of his original contract would stay with the Raiders.

Weei.com is also on the story now, its starting to grow some legs

We need to get this done quickly, the longer it stalls the less likely it will happen IMO. I rather it be a third rounder but "It is what it is."

I was under the impression there was a possibly outstanding 1.5m roster bonus.

hey -- where are the player contract details on nflpa.org?

Not sure that is true...I don't see LONGER as meaning it won't...I think they may wait a week or so for a look see as to what they have at OTAs..and then make the offer. Hoping more a 3rd..a 2nd seems way too much for a player with so many injuries...and is on their last year.

Not true.

Burgess's roster bonus would be the Pats responisbility if it comes due after the trade, and it isn't likely the Raiders will pay the bonus and then trade him.

EDIT: Think back to the timing of the Vrabel trade and who paid his roster bonus.

A second round pick is way too much to give up for a 3.5 sacks in 10 games guy last season that will bolt pasture in 2010. A 3rd or less and we'll talk with Crazy Al, nothing more than that.
