How many great-good QBs have we ever had?

Re: How many great-good QBs have we ever had ?

now that we are talking in the last period about Cassel or O'Connell or Gutierrez: in approx 50 years how many great-good qb we had overall ?

in my opinion: Brady, Bledsoe, Eason, Grogan, Parilli, Plunkett, Flutie.

let's say 7 in 48 years ?

between great and good

I would put Brady, Bledsoe and Parilli as great Patriot QBs.

Grogan was a good QB...maybe under different circumstances he would have been great. He played his heart (and body) out for this organization. He gave fans back in the day some special moments to remember.

I can never ever consider Tony Eason as good QB. The guy lived his NFL career in fear of being hit/hurt. He made decisions based on that fear. I never saw a guy fall to the ground before anyone was close to hitting him. HE did not want to be hit.

I see Flutie as a great Canadian League QB...not sure about great/good NFL QB although he did some good things in Buffalo and San Diego.

Plunkett turned into a good QB when he finally made it to Oakland. He never had the opportunity here...he never WOULD have had the opportunity here. Between playing for a crappy team and an abusive crowd ( I was there and they were...he had stuff thrown at him many games) he was just not going to make it here. Booing is one thing...throwing stuff at a player is another.

Re: How many great-good qb we ever had ?

I didn't follow the team prior to 1985, but I'd say your list is pretty good from that point until now.

1985? Bandwagonner! ;)

Re: How many great-good QBs have we ever had ?

I don't remember Parili, but he challenged all comers and held his roster spot when they were actively look for someone younger.

Grogan was not great, but he was hard for a defense to game plan for, I'd imagine. He was good.

Plunkett never did anything with us really. His time in the sun was in Oakland.

Bledsoe has a great arm, but he was too tough for his own good. He took too many hits while looking downfield. It led to sacks and turnovers.

Brady is our only true great QB. He's one of the greatest of all-time so in contrast all our other contenders look heavily flawed.

Re: How many great-good qb we ever had ?

I take Eason and Flutie off that list and rename it "very good or better during some part of their Pats career."

I'm also wondering why Michael Bishop was left off this list.:D

It's hard to take this board seriously with this post, I'm going to assume you were joking. However, posts that list Testaverde are just as ludicrous. What did Flutie do with the Pats as a QB?

Eason was good for a short period of time and led the team to the SB against the Bears despite the revisionist history that claims it for Grogan.

The Pats have had one great QB- Brady
Two very good QB's- Bledsoe and Grogan
Three good QB's- Eason, Plunkett and Parilli.
The rest were all pretenders.
Eason and Plunkett couldn't take the beating, but they were good for awhile.

Re: How many great-good QBs have we ever had ?

in approx the last 15 year we had our 2 best ones: Bledsoe and Brady and with them we reached 5 Super Bowls (3 wins, 2 losses)

before them we had only 1 Super Bowl appareance (awesome, beautiful run and then the 'disaster' against Da Bearz)

but in that year (1985) Tony Eason was very good and effective

i followed that amazing run with big pleasure via newspapers (internet was not yet existing infortunately) and still today i love the 1985 team

I'd say Brady & Bledsoe were/are in the great category (Brady, definately first ballot Hall f Famer, Bledsoe, possible Hall of Fame, look at his stats ranking). Grogan, Eason & Parilli were good, Plunkett & Flutie were ok. Plunkett had moments of greatness as a Patriot, but obviously, his crowning glory came with the Raiders.

Re: How many great-good QBs have we ever had ?

there is only one great QB in Pats history, and unfortunitly we wont witness his greatness this yr..

Tom Brady is the best QB this franchise has and may will ever seen...

Steve Grogan, was my child hood idol.. and enjoyed his play and will always love numer 14..

Drew Bledsoe was the best the franchise seen since Grogan, but he never fully loved football. And if he did he could have taken his game to a new level.. But was great for the franchise at a time when it needed a savior..

Re: How many great-good QBs have we ever had ?

Amazing how few there have ben.

Brady is great.
Drew was good.
Babe was before my time but word from the older fans puts him at good.
Grogan was tough and everyone loved him but he really wasn't more than an average QB.

That is really it. Plunkett might have made the list had the circumstances been different but he wasn't a good QB here.

There has been a lot of downplaying of Tom Brady in the last few weeks by Pats fans but thinking back through the history of the team should make us all appreciate what we've seen the last 7 years.

Re: How many great-good QBs have we ever had ?

where you should put now Matt Cassel ?

number 8 overall ?

Good summary, I would disagree about Plunkett, he was good here given his age and especially the supporting cast. HE took a putrid team and helped win some games we had no business winning.

Re: How many great-good qb we ever had ?

Well, if you are counting their quality while they were a Patriots, you can take both Plunkett and Flutie off the list. Neither did much of anything here.

As for Eason, he was good for about 2 years and totally fell apart.

Also, both Brady and Bledsoe each were starting QBs for a decade or so. Bledsoe was 9 years and Brady is 8 and counting. Parilli was the starter seven of those years. So 24 of those 48 years were by three QBs. Grogan played for Patriots 16 years, but only started most of the games for about 5-6 of them.

If you

I'll second that. I know the topic is in the range of good to great, but good QBs - at least those who are good for just a few seasons out of their careers, are a dime a dozen (in relative football salary terms).

They could be signed to long term contracts but will only produce at a high level for a fraction of the time.

Those guys who generally perform at the "great" levels and live up to their contracts are pretty rare. Brady is obviously one and I'd be generous and put Bledsoe in that category as well (though obviously he didn't produce through his final contract).

Both had the ability to strap the team to their back, take control of a game and quite often win on a consistent basis.

Tony Eason also for me can be considered a good qb in Pats history

3 seasons more or less as starter; on 1985 he reached a Super Bowl with 3 road games wins

more then 11,000 yards

i think he still is top 5 in many offensive categories (i read it recently)

he could have done more for us, no doubt-but still a good Pats qb imho

Re: How many great-good QBs have we ever had ?

Babe Parilli's pass completion percentage was not much more than 50%

but he was able to complete clutch passes to Gino.

different game back then 50% was top of the league, I'm thinking. i think the west coast offenses started the 60% CPs, I'm not sure.

Re: How many great-good QBs have we ever had ?

Great- Tom Brady

Good - Steve Grogan, Babe Parilli

Good but could have been better- Drew Bledsoe and Tony Eason

Good because he was a fan fav- Doug Fluite.

Re: How many great-good QBs have we ever had ?

Brady is the G.O.A.T.
Bledsoe was great in his time and is the second best QB to ever play for the Patriots.
Parilli would probably fall in the "good" category.
Grogan won over the fans because he took a beating, but he was nothing special. "Good" is where I'd put him.
Eason had the skills but not the heart. I borderline him good/ok, but "good" for enough years gets the nod.
Plunkett didn't get it done until after he left. He gets "ok"
Flutie was ok, but his best days were elsewhere.

2 great
3 good
2 ok

A bunch of stiffs below that. If I overlooked someone who deserved naming and left him in the stiffs box, it was not intentional.

Re: How many great-good QBs have we ever had ?

this is true-i always considered Bledsoe and Eason the same way

high expectations were, correctly, high on both of them

i would have loved they would have won the Super Bowl the playied (but against CHI was probably impossible for Eason)

flutie was a good NFL QB but was never more then a back up for the pats so i would not put him on the list

eason was 28-21 as a starting QB with the pats and is 6th all time on the patriots passing list with 10732 yard's 60 TD 48 INT great no good maybe

babe parilli was 44-32-7 as a starting QB for the pats and is 4th on the patriots all time passing list with 16747 yard's 132 TD 138 INT good maybe great no

jim plunkett was 23-38 as a starting QB for the pats and is 5th on the patriots all time passing list with 9932 yard's 62 TD 87 INT he had his best year's with oakland is was not a good QB for the pats

Steve Grogan was 75-60 as a starting QB for the pats and is 3rd all time on the patriots passing list with 26886 yard's 182 TD 208 INT and hold's the NFL racord for most rushing TD in a season by a QB 1976 12 TD and he played his whole Career with the pats (good yes great maybe )

Drew Bledsoe was 63-60 as a starting QB for the pats and is first on the patriots list with 29657 yard's 166 TD 138 INT and is 8th all time on the NFL list with 44611 yard's GOOD yes GREAT will at time's was one of the best QB in the NFL i would say yes he is great

tom brady is 87-24 as a starting QB for the pats and is #2 on the patriots all time passing list with 26446 yard's he will be #1 aftter this season and is first with 197 TD 86 INT he has 3 ring's and is the only ture great QB in patriots history

Re: How many great-good QBs have we ever had ?

I think really there are six...Brady, Bledsoe, Grogan, Parilli, Eason and Plunkett....I would include Flutie..BUT one year as a backup JUST before retirement?? "played" in having the Pats uni..BUT??? I just draw a line before that..as Patriot Qbs...But that is a pretty short list..Eason only had a few good years..and Plunkett was learning and had his best time elsewhere...so??? Parilli was a BIT better than just good...the game was so much different than today...he was smart and was one of the top AFL QBs....the team went downhill fast after he retired...in 50 years...really ONLY a few..

Eason had its moments, but he did not love the game , same as Bledsoe , he did not love it either..

I know if Grogan would have started, the out come was not going to be the same, but we would have had 14 early points in my opinion in the super bowl..

When I was younger I liked Eason, because of the whole Marino QB class thing.. But never appricated Grogan, till the 86 game against the orange bowl
