Chicago Bears acquire Jay Cutler from Denver Broncos - ESPN

The Chicago Bears pulled the big upset Thursday afternoon by acquiring Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, a source told ESPN.com.

The Broncos confirmed the move.

To acquire Cutler, the Bears had to give up quarterback Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 and 2010, a source said.

To complete the trade, the Broncos had to give back a third-round pick in 2009.

The Bears beat out the Redskins, Buccaneers, Lions, Titans and other teams to get land the 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterback.

The Broncos had been asking for at least two first-round choices.

Highlights of some of Jay Cutler's best moments in 2008.
Cutler asked to be traded when he found out first-year coach Josh McDaniels tried to acquire Matt Cassel in a trade with the Patriots.

Cutler had not returned phone calls from the Broncos, according to the team, and had been staying away from the offseason program.

Based on inital reports Denver holds these picks now....
12 18 48 79 84 ? Right? :mad::mad::mad:

And 2 firsts next yr too!

unbelievable

Re: OT: Jay Cutler to Bears for Orton, 2 firsts, third

I'm glad Cutler is going to the NFC, and the Bears have no excuse now this year.....but Denver is looking great right now. They have a ton of good picks, and Orton will play well in JM's system while JM develops a young guy....whether that might be Quinn or Sanchez

Re: OT: Jay Cutler to Bears for Orton, 2 firsts, third

You think McDaniel's is going to take a quarterback this year or wait until next year?

Re: OT: Jay Cutler to Bears for Orton, 2 firsts, third

I think Broncos go get Quinn. I really do. & I hate them.

Re: OT: Jay Cutler to Bears for Orton, 2 firsts, third

Good deal for both sides. Say what you want about Cutler but he's young and he's good. 2 firsts sounds about right for him plus Chicago gets a 3rd back. These days you NEED a great QB if you want to be a legit title threat, very few exceptions to that. And Denver made out good for being in a tough forced position.

Bears are going to be damn good next year. They have always been just a quarterback away from being a dominant NFC team. And now they've got a young Pro-Bowler. Great move for them.

I am curious to see how McD does with Orton. Orton is barely an average NFL quarterback.

Maybe if this was 2006.

They had a bad offense and defense last season.

Re: OT: Jay Cutler to Bears for Orton, 2 firsts, third

Congrats to Josh! He can now re-load with two firsts this year and next.

What a great move by Josh. Orton is not great, but Josh made Cassel lots better so he can probably do the same with Orton, and they get 2 first round picks!!! They can now add 2 huge pieces to their defense and they can add 2 more next year. I can't believe the Bears gave up so much.

Re: OT: Jay Cutler to Bears for Orton, 2 firsts, third

Congrats to the Broncos for landing a veteran QB (which the Bears just needed to unload) and two-first round draft picks!

Obviously newly-appointed head coaches love to come in and put their stamp on the team, generally by drafting a QB in the first round (no matter how horrible he is). No use leaving your coaching career and reputation upon a QB that the previous guy drafted and who clearly proved to be a prima-dona in the locker room. That guy will get your fired in no time when he pulls a "Manny" and stops performing or comes up hurt.

McDaniels can now give Mike Nolan some ammo on defense and work his magic on Chris Simms and Kyle Orton.

Now they should try to figure out how to deal with Marshall, who will likely be the next problem for the Broncos, and figure out how much longer Champ Bailey can play at a high level.

I have a hard time believing that Cutler is going to lead any team to the promised land. He's acted like a spoiled kid for years; the latest comments from this morning were unbelievable ("I don't want to be traded, I love Denver.) and he hasn't proven he can win (17-20 for Denver).

Being a great player in this league is a lot more than having some physical skills. It's more than understanding schemes. It's also about being a teammate and a leader. Being coachable. Setting the example.

What makes you think Jay Cutler can do that? And, without that, what makes you think he can ultimately lead a team to the promised land?

Re: OT: Jay Cutler to Bears for Orton, 2 firsts, third

so how many think that we got F'd now on the Cassel trade?

Let’s not confuse Cutler and Cassel. Cutler was an established probowler and Cassel had a good year on a great team. I think Cassel has the ability to be better but all the reports from other teams scouting him don’t believe he was a ‘frachise qb’. He can become one, where those same teams consider Cutler a franchise qb. Just look at what happened: as soon as Cutler went on the market officially last night they had half the NFL coming after him….that pats only had 1 offer on the table and then some other teams that were willing to trade if it was a 3 way in which they would get cutler. (tampa and Detroit wanted Cutler, not Cassel) There was never a #1 proposed in any, way, shape, or form without Cutler as part of the deal!

Re: OT: Jay Cutler to Bears for Orton, 2 firsts, third

Im just glad the jets didnt get him!

Re: OT: Jay Cutler to Bears for Orton, 2 firsts, third

I hear you, but look at the difference in deals!! Cutler's not THAT much better if at ALL. I think we may have pulled the trigger too quickly. I know the salary crippled us...It's not like we started signing free agents the next day... I love BB, but I think he made a mistake.

Orton is better than most think, and will improve under McDaniel's coaching. I'm not sure I can say the same for Cutler in Chicago.

I think the Broncos made out well, and at the same time may have gotten rid of someone whose mental attitude would never have led to a championship.
